Justin Hayward on Tour

While a Moody Blues concert is an epic event, a Justin Hayward solo show — which might contain some of the same songs — offers fans a more intimate experience, one that's equally entrancing in its own way. Hayward wrote and sang the bulk of The Moody Blues' biggest hits, from "Nights in White Satin" to "The Story in Your Eyes" and "Your Wildest Dreams." And he's usually happy to bust out some of his Moodies tunes in his solo shows. But he's also maintained a solo recording career ever since the 1970s, full of melodic gems that you won't get to hear at a Moody Blues concert. And it's the combination of those two elements that really makes a Hayward show a special occurrence unto itself. When you're hearing Hayward deliver his material in a more direct manner, sometimes telling the stories behind the songs, it makes for a unique connection with this rock legend.

Justin Hayward in Concert

The world knows singer, songwriter, and guitarist Justin Hayward best as the driving force behind The Moody Blues, one of the most innovative bands of the classic-rock era. With Hayward at the helm, the Moodies moved from an R&B-inflected style in the mid-1960s to a more psychedelic sound later in the decade, making history with their marriage of classical music and rock on the 1967 milestone Days of Future Passed and prefiguring progressive rock in the process. And though he led the band through multiple comebacks and evolutionary phases in the subsequent decades, Hayward also created an artistic space all his own outside of The Moody Blues. He released his first solo album, the appropriately titled Songwriter, in 1977. And ever since then, though he's had long periods where he concentrated on being a bandleader, he's never closed the door on his solo career. Whenever he's ready for a more personal statement, Hayward steps away from the Moodies to resume his path with his own music.

I've been a Moody Blues fan since the late 1960s and have seen them in concert in larger venues 5 times. They have always been amazing. This smaller setting, however, with Justin and other musicians was very special. A much more intimate setting. It was especially rewarding to hear Justin talk and reminisce about his life and experiences, as well as to play some songs that may not often get into their regular Moody Blues set. Also, the young guitarist, Mike Dawes, that Justin was promoting is an incredibly talented musician! Thoroughly enjoyed the entire evening!

Justin Hayward solo tour was exceptional

by HobanGirl on 8/17/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Being a resident of the metro DC area has its distinct advantages, one of which (in this instance) is that I was able to catch both Alexandria shows, as well as the Annapolis and Wilmington performances. The set list for the 12-stop tour was perfect, as were the venues themselves. I prefer intimate clubs with well-worn floorboards and storied pasts. Being a minimalist who believes less is more, I found the acoustic renditions pure and mesmerizing. The rich timbre of the sound quality was unblemished, often hushed and sometimes nearly classical. There was a lovely camaraderie between the four players and each performance proved unique in that the banter and anecdotes varied each evening. It's amazing how numbers that were first performed more than four decades ago still sound fresh and inexplicably get better and better with time. And the new compositions from Spirits of the Western Sky! Unbelievably, the 6 numbers included in the set list were even stronger and lovelier when heard live. There were subtle variations and nuances that captivated, superbly interpreted with heart and soul. Each show was a rare one-on-one experience -- collectively, the tour was a gem, multi-faceted and sparkling. Not to be missed.

    Justin Hayward A True Classic

    by Moodiesgirl65 on 8/17/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Seeing Justin Hayward without the Moody Blues was a little strange until about 15 minutes into the show when one realizes he doesn't really need them at all. The show was a mixture of classic Hayward written Moodies songs and new material from Justin's new solo CD Spirits of the Western Sky. Justin Hayward is sadly one of the most underrated, overlooked muscians in the music industry. Flawless guitar, soaring vocals go together to make him one hell of a performer. Of course we, the Moody Blues fans have always known this. This show, interspersed with some personal stories from Justin makes for a more intimate experience with the music. The fellow Mike Dawes that opens for Justin and then accompanies on guitar throughout the show is amazing. So, bottom line if you are a Moody Blues fan this show was an absolute dream come true. If you're not a Moodies fan but a fan of good music played well and from the heart and soul of the musician then seeing Justin Hayward in concert would be an enjoyment .

    Even Better Than Expected

by Streamside on 8/17/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Justin's songwriting, arrangements, and playing are justifiably legendary. All were on intimate, up close and personal display at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. The venue is an established stop on the circuit and almost everybody haas performed there over its 40-plus years in existence. Justin's setlist comprised songs from his new solo album as well as Moody Blues classics. All were ethereal, and the band was very tight. I expected two guys and two acoustic guitars, but the 4-person ensemble was able to create a beautiful, melodious, sound, sort of a Moodies Lite, that was simply far more enjoyable than one might anticipate. Great show!

    Justin Hayward is the greatest!

by Fumm on 8/17/13Birchmere - Alexandria

I have been following Justin Hayward and the Moody Blues since 1971 and he is just as good now at 67 than he was back then. He is like a vintage wine that grows better with age. This show just proved my point! See you in Seattle in October with the Moodies.

    Amazing Show

    by Bif5 on 8/17/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Fantastic show! This was an intimate evening with Justin hearing songs from his new album. What was great was that he also did performed a few Moodies songs, some of them are not usually played in concert. There was also and opening performer (who was introduced by Justin Hayward and also performed along with him) Mike Dawes. Mike is an incredible guitarist who made sounds with his guitar like I have never heard.

    Justin Hayward

by Anonymous on 8/16/13The Concert Hall - New York

#1 - The billing at the "Concert Hall" was listed as JUSTIN HEYWARD not HAYWARD! #2 - There was a performer who played before J. Hayward....he was NOT mentioned on the billing. After his peformance, there was a 20 minute intermission and then FINALLY Justin HAYWARD performed. There was NO mention of an opening act....especially since a 'long' intermission followed that. Disappointing! We came to see and hear a JUSTIN HAYWARD PERFORMANCE!!

    Intimate performance

by MKelle on 8/15/13Somerville Theatre - Somerville

From the moment Justin walked out on the stage to introduce his opening act, (Yes, he introduced his opening act), we knew that this would be a more intimate performance than with his band, The Moody Blues. The opener, Mike Dawes, also complements Justin during his headlining performance. The keyboardist and percussionist seemed to know exactly what was needed and when. The best parts, other than the fantastic songs, were the tidbits he shared about his life and his music. For someone who has followed The Moody Blues and Justin's solo career for more than 40 years, this show was the ultimate.

    Beautiful! Glorious!

by JackieBlueCT on 8/15/13The Concert Hall - New York

This was the third Justin show for us and it was the best yet! Amazing songs - some from Justin's new solo album " Spirits of the Western Sky" and the remainder, a wonderful mix of Moody tunes, some that this devotee has never heard live. Justin was in great voice! Isn't he always? He was perfectly accompanied by Julie Ragins and Alan Hewett (keys...& vocals) as well as the amazing Mike Dawes (guitarist extrordinaire.) It is Mike's first US tour and surely not his last. He is one to watch, for sure!

Hayward shines as a solo act!

    by jimnsue4ever on 8/15/13Somerville Theatre - Somerville

This may be sacrilegious to say, but, in my opinion, Justin Hayward should retire the Moody Blues, and carry on with his solo act... or at least make the Moodies' perpetual nostalgia act a secondary endeavor. Other than their Christmas themed album in 2003, the Moody Blues haven't promoted a new album since 1999's Strange Times, so it was refreshing to hear Hayward playing 6 songs from his 2013 album Spirits of the Western Sky (granted, one is a reworking of a 30 year old Moodies song). Justin played acoustic guitars all night & was in terrific voice. Justin was accompanied by phenomenal young guitar player, Mike Dawes, who also opened the show, and Moody Blues side musicians Alan Hewitt (keyboards, vocals) and Julie Ragins (vocals, percussion, keyboard). The stripped down arrangements of the new songs improved on the almost too shiny & perfect studio recordings, and Justin's causal and engaging storytelling between songs was a welcomed change from the brief "canned" song introductions at Moody Blues shows. At one point, his cohorts left the stage & he performed a new song "The Eastern Sun" by himself, which allowed the song's pure beauty to shine through. I would definitely welcome a one-man show by Hayward, or at least a few more songs performed in this manner. While Justin nailed all the big hits, the MB songs I enjoyed the most were "non-hits" plus "Forever Autumn." He sang wonderfully all night & my only "complaint," which was more of a "wish," was that he sang a few more of his solo songs. He seemed to be really enjoying this tour & I look forward to future tours of this type & maybe even more new material.

    Justin Never sounded better

by Morningsong on 8/14/13Somerville Theatre - Somerville

Justin's talent and own personality shined immensely as the star he is. Humble, funny, gracious and so complimentary of his guest musicians, his stories were entertaining and informative. Why he has waited all these years for his own solo tour is a mystery...but fans should not miss the opportunity to experience his 'acoustic' genious...even more incredible than the album alone.

    Justin was fab

by fireman322 on 8/13/13The Concert Hall - New York

I have seen the Moodies several times, and didn't quite know what to expect of Justin without the rest of the band. What a great surprise, he was superb. I didn't peg him as being a storyteller, but he was a good one. I would definitely make a point of going to see Justin the next time he's playing in the city.

    Justin Hayward

by 1MZKLVR on 8/13/13The Concert Hall - New York

We've seen The Moody Blues many, many times because we are huge fans of the group. Seeing Justin Hayward perform as a solo artist with a smaller back-up band was outstanding. We really enjoyed his storytelling and anecdotes -- what a bonus! It was a great experience.

Justin Hayward....like he always has been !

by LiaRose on 8/13/13The Concert Hall - New York

Justin's voice is still as great as ever ! He was very congenial; spoke to the audience; played some of his new solo songs but also many Moody Blues songs and the best part was playing some Moody Blues songs that are long forgotten and not played at Moody Blues concerts. Almost like an "unplugged" show.
