About

Spanish singer/songwriter Julio Iglesias is proof that romance is alive and well. The passionate balladeer was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in 2013 as the best-selling male Latin artist of all time with more than 250 million albums sold worldwide. He's also one of the world's most successful touring artists, one who continues to sell huge numbers of tickets for shows at arenas and stadiums around the world. Iglesias has released more than 80 albums, in 14 languages, over the course of his career, which peaked from the late'70s through the '80s. In North America, he's best known for two duets from the '80s: "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" (with Willie Nelson) and "All of You" (with Diana Ross). Ironically, Iglesias may owe his storied career to a near-tragedy. He turned to music when he was 20 years old, after he was paralyzed in a car accident that ended his career as a goalkeeper for the Real Madrid soccer team. He's said that he learned to play guitar while recovering over the course of three years, and eventually regained almost all of his mobility. In 1968 he won a songwriting contest that led to his first recording contract.  The following year he released his debut album, "Yo Canto," in Spain. By 1971, he'd sold his first million records and begun to expand his fan base throughout the Spanish and English speaking world.

    Short but Nice

    by Mar69 on 7/14/09Montalvo - Saratoga

It is nice to have an opening act, however, the delay between Julio and the other guy was way too much. By the time Julio came out on stage we were completely bored and tired. There is only so much wine one can handle when there is nothing going on. I only got half of what I paid for. I think if you post the concert to be a certain number of hours, it should disclose who is going to be wasting your time prior to the main event. That way we could make an informed decision as whether is worth the price of admission.

    Julio Iglesias was great but...

by Harvey on 7/13/09Montalvo - Saratoga

the event seemed to be a little tooo short compared to other concerts. Without a doubt, Julio Iglesias is and has been a legend in his genre of music. At first I thought he was lip-sincing, but when he talked in the middle of a couple of songs, i was amazed to hear how close to an actual recording the concert sounded. It was a surpise for my wife and she absolutely loved it. One last thing, the transportation issue, was HORRIBLE ! getting out of the venue to catch a ride to the parking lot of the college where the cars were was a nightmare. It seemed like the locale was unprepared. Next time, I will drive all the way to the venue.

    JULIO NEEDS TO RETIRE

by UNHAPPYCAMPER on 7/13/09Montalvo - Saratoga

I was very disappointed by the concert. I have seen Julio twice in the past couple of years at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga and was pleased by his shows although they were recycled songlists and dialogue. However, I was quite saddened to see Julio in his state at the Montalvo. He could barely walk onto the state and seemed almost delirious. He was not in any shape or form to perform. He was not even dressed appopriately. His pants were incredibly short and it seemed as though his management was not looking out for his best interest. The sound was TERRIBLE. Julio had to stop during his initial performance to make comments to the stage monitor guy to assist him with the sound. It was a disgrace to see a STAR at this level. The show should have been cancelled and as patrons we should have all received our MONEY back....

    Julio Iglesias; What a Letdown.

    by Wolf13 on 7/13/09Montalvo - Saratoga

I'm a big fan of Julio Iglesias' songs and music. His songs in Spanish are very poetic and captivating. For that reason, I think he is at his best when he sings in Spanish, his native tongue. He showed that he has charisma and still has the unique voice that the world over admires and appreciates. Having said that, the concert at Villa Montalvo left something to be desired. I believe that an artist, whether a painter, an actor or a singer, should know the audience he or she is addressing. In this case it was mostly a Latino audience from all over the Hispanic world. He sang a few songs in Spanish. To which the audience responded with delightful enthusiasm and appreciation. But, then he started singing French and Italian songs. The audience was definitely quieter and more subdued when those songs were sung. That is to say that there were not many, if any, French or Italian people in the audience. Even though I understand that one can appreciate songs which are not in a language they speak, it is still nicer to listen to songs one grew up with and can hang on to with every word that is sung. I was hoping to hear more songs like Quiero or Aveces Tu, Aveces Yo, or Quijote. Alas, that was not to be. One final thought of discontent: the show was barely an hour long. The schedule said the concert would start at 7:00 p.m. It didn't start until after 8:00 p.m. and it was barely 9:00 p.m. when it ended without so much as an encore. There was more time waiting for the show to start than there was show. It was like going to a nice restaurant, paying a pretty penny for your dinner but then having to leave still hungry.

    Delightful evening of entertainment!

by ccdh on 7/13/09Montalvo - Saratoga

Julio's show was a real pleasure. Wonderful seats and a nice variety of performers were part of his show. The dancers were terrific and the songs he selected were favorites of mine. It is so nice to see a performer in such an intimate setting. Really loved the evening.

    Julio: Disappointing

by SaratogaJD on 7/13/09Montalvo - Saratoga

A 50-minute show, and none of the classics I hoped he'd perform. Julio is a gem, but this show was simply not worth the money. I would also like to add that LiveNation did an absolutely terrible job with the logistics. The post-show shuttle service back to the parking lot was a disaster, and the LN folks were completely inept in terms of crowd management, explaining to patrons where they should go, etc. Many of us spent far longer trying to get on a shuttle back to our cars than we did listening to Julio perform!

    Julio Iglesias

by torres on 7/13/09Montalvo - Saratoga

On June 3 my husband and I watched Julio Iglesias. He still thinks of himself as a very young, hot male, and he is not. He still has a wonderful voice and his show would have been much more enjoyable if he had not thought of himself as extremely sexy. For me it was a turn off. Also, the bus situation back to the college was a nightmare. It took us an hour and half to get back to our car, because there was absolutely no order when boarding the buses. Hope this situation has been corrected.

    by Wendy1 on 7/13/09Montalvo - Saratoga

The concert was great. I have never seen Julio Iglesias live before so I was very excited. However, I was very disappointed that the show did not last very long and I felt I was cheated out of the show.
