First of all, the good. I would make no criticism of Julieta. She puts her whole body and soul in to her gigs and her performance at Warner Theatre, Washington DC, May 30, 2023 was no exception. She sang and played her accordion, guitars and keyboard for 2 hours, non-stop, and performed her latest release in its entirety (I believe) including the haunting Tu Historia and En tu Orilla, plus all her hits from over the last twenty years that we in the audience loved and sang along with. Lento, Eres Para Mí, Te Ví, Algo Está Cambiando, Andar Conmigo, El Presente, Bien o Mal, Limón y Sal (one of two encores,) etc., etc. That much was excellent. I love her songwriting and clearly the audience connects with her lyrics. So we got our money's worth, for sure.
But.... if I were her manager I would make changes to the band, P.A. and the sound. The drums and bass were booming loud, and drowned her out a lot. The bass playing wasn't even close to being musical and I don't think it added anything other than noise to the bands' sound. Same with the mini synthesizer. How can a synth track boom? Crazy. There was a backing synth track during some of the numbers and although I think that's cheesy, I guess it's okay on an occasional intro.
The drums were not as bad, just here and there too loud, and unnecessarily booming. I don't really know if this is the fault of the house PA or the bands' sound setup, but it definitely left room for improvement. Julieta's songs and lyrics deserve better.
