About

JUDY COLLINS IN CONCERT:

Legendary singer-songwriter Judy Collins has lent her iconic voice to an impressive range of genres over her five decade career, from her beloved folk work to acclaimed forays into rock and show tunes. Whether she's taking fans down memory lane with nostalgic performances of "Both Sides, Now" or breaking hearts with "Send in the Clowns," Collins never fails to imbue her material with the wistful romance that makes her performances so moving. Back on the road with a diverse collection of classic material, she is set to stun on her upcoming tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Seattle, Collins grew up studying classical piano under the rigorous tutelage of acclaimed pianist Antonia Brico. After being exposed to folk music in her teens by her radio DJ father, she made a shift towards lyric-based guitar music. Immersing herself in Greenwich Village's folk scene, Collins worked as a street performer and played small clubs before eventually attracting the attention of Elektra Records and releasing her 1961 debut A Maid of Constant Sorrow. While her early albums offered a straightforward folk sound, she branched out on 1966's In My Life, recording songs by artists as diverse as Leonard Cohen and Jacques Brel and incorporating lush orchestration -- a bold move for a folk artist at the time.  The stylistic shift proved a success, earning her a Grammy in 1968 for "Both Sides, Now" and setting the tone for much of her later work. Collins continues to be a consummate performer, stunning fans around the world with her continued grace and charm in concert.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"For those of us who remember Judy in the 70's, this was like stepping back in time. Her voice is as beautiful as it was then. Her persona is warm and engaging. What a treat."

"Judy Collins is an amazing talent; and her voice sounds as clear and crisp as it did 50 years ago.
Loved her storytelling and anecdotes too!"

"Cannot believe what a marvelous voice at age 74. A truly spectacular performance by a vital artist!"

    Judy Collins is a legend

by delraygirl on 12/17/09Birchmere - Alexandria

While her voice is not as mighty and pure as it once was, she is amazing, resilient, an icon indeed. Declare her a national treasure. Give her a monument in Greenwich Village. It was a privilege to see her last night.

    See and Hear This Legend!!

by gmerlinl on 12/17/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Judy Collins is a living legend, and it was wonderful to see and hear her in an intimate venue like the Birchmere. She told stories, sang brilliantly a capella and with a guitar and a piano, and generally captivated an adoring full house. Her show included several of her old standards, which she did just about as well as I've ever heard them, despite having "just turned 70 this year". "The Hills of Shilo", for instance, sung a capella with its soaring chorus, was glorious. She did "Diamonds and Rust" wonderfully, an homage to Joan Baez. And she sang "I Had a Dream" BETTER than I've ever heard it. She took a turn at the piano in a quiet turn and sang outstanding and intimate songs. There's a show scheduled in January and we plan to see her again.

Judy Collins was elegant and mesmerizing !!!

by GGfan on 12/17/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Often when one has known of a performer for a long time, actually seeing them is disappointing in some way: NOT the case with Judy Collins. She is elegant, beautiful, funny, charming, and her voice!!! There are moments when her voice sounds like it can't be human - so clear and clean - chilling and extraordinary.

    Judy Collins... Amazing!!!

by Antikmn on 11/9/09The Plaza Theatre - Orlando

I was in rapture listening to Judy Collins. Her singing is absolutely beautiful... even after 50 years of performing! And I enjoyed all of her stories, of which she had many. One of the best concerts I have been to in a long, long time. My only wish is that the concert lasted for hours and hours... 2 hours is just not long enough to hear all of her songs from her distinguished career. Thank you, Judy, for a beautiful evening. It was the best. And to top it all off, I was able to buy a signed CD of her latest music (which is also fantastic).

Her Voice is as Beautiful as Ever

by MockTurtle on 11/8/09The Plaza Theatre - Orlando

From her first note we knew we were in for a special event. The simplicity of the piano and guitar accompaniment supported, yet never interrupted, the beauty of the lyric soprano voice which floated in the air like pure silk. It truly an experience which will be recorded as one of the greatest performers I'll ever witness during my life.

    Judy Collins was terrific

by Pburgiowan on 10/11/09Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall - Rochester

I went to the Judy Collins concert with somewhat modest expectations--after all, she is a 70+ folkie who was known for her great range. We all know singers lose that range as they age. Well, Judy Collins is an exception to that rule. Her range was completely intact and her ability to deliver the songs she made famous as well as a host of other songs was simply outstanding. Sure, her voice cracked a couple of times and she had to pause to clear her throat but many singers suffer that fate when they are plopped down in an unseasonably cold and dry aired Rochester, Minnesota. Both Sides Now, Send in the Clowns, Suzanne, Someday Soon, Barbara Allan and many, many more filled her nearly two hour show. She also sang some new material as well. She had an accompaniast (piano) and her guitar and her amazing voice.

    Judy Collins was Great

by zebulonPike on 10/11/09Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall - Rochester

Judy did any excellent job. For a 70 year old, her voice was spectacular. A couple of minor beraks, but overall, great. The sotries she spun as lead-ins were all good. The warm up act was funny and easy to listen to. Overall, a great night.

by casseopia on 7/18/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

t was a star filled clear night of beautiful Cleveland weather at intimate Cain Park when Judy took the stage with her acompaniest. She sang many old favorites and took us down memory lane in a sequence of music from the 60's on, with some audience participation. Then it was clearly into the present where she sang the amazing song from the British U tube singer and a haunting melody reminding us of the current war and our sons and daughters. Judy Collins is one classy lady with an amazing voice for the people and by the people Her music is about humanity inspiring us to think, yet her warmth makes you want to sit down and share a cup of coffee A national treasure.

    Judy's still got it!

by Greypei on 7/17/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

The sweet voice that Judy has always been known for is still great. Although I've always known her music, I did not realize what a fine story teller she is. I would definitely go to see her again.

She can still sing even though in her sixties

by cds730 on 7/17/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

Fabulous concert and I love the small type of theater. I only wish she would have had a few more instruments to accompany her along with her great piano player Russell Waldrin, but she was great. I will definiinitely see her again.

    concert

by obama on 7/16/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

The concert site was wonderful for Judy. It was too bad that she made it into a political forum. I wish these entertainers would just entertain --I bought tickets to a concert to enjoy Judy's singing not to hear her political comments.

    Judy Still Has It!

by hammbone on 7/16/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

We were very pleasantly surprised that Judy's voice still sounds like a beautiful crystal bell after all of these years. She easily got the audience to sing along to some old favorites with her. Cain Park was a perfect setting, not too large and with perfect sound levels. We are still raving about it three weeks later.
