About

Years before forming one of Nashville's most genre-bending bands, the members of Judah & the Lion grew up in separate corners of the U.S., listening to every type of music that came their way. They lovedit all: the twang of folk, the beat of hip-hop, the drive of rock & roll, the punch of pop. Later, after college brought the musicians to Tennessee, it only made sense to combine those different backgrounds — and different sounds — together.

With their second full-length album Folk Hop N Roll, the guys shine a light on the place where their influences overlap. It's a wide-ranging sound, with fuzz bass, hip-hop percussion, distorted banjo riffs, and super-sized melodies all stirred into the same mixing pot.

"There's no boundaries," says front man Judah Akers, who shares the band's lineup with mandolin player Brian Macdonald and banjo wiz Nate Zuercher. "We wanted to make something raw, something with attitude. We all grew up loving these hip-hop beats, so why not make an album that has the grit of Run DMC or Beastie Boys, along with all the folk instruments that we play?"

Like Kids These Days — the band's debut record, which climbed to number four on the Billboard Folk Chart and number two on the genre-wide Heatseekers chart after its release in September 2014 — Folk Hop N Roll was produced by award winner Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton). Cobb captured the band's new songs in a series of quick, inspired takes, aiming for performances that sounded real and raw rather than polished and perfect. Everything was done in just two weeks. The goal was to fuel the album with the same electricity that fills the band's live show.

An independent band whose success has arrived not on the back of some big budget major label, but through the band's own touring, Judah & the Lion have built a large, loyal fanbase on the road. They played 150 shows in 2015 alone, stretching their gigs all across America and Scandinavia. Along the way, they shared stages with artists like Mat Kearney, Drew Holcomb, and Ben Rector. That sort of drive — the commitment to chasing down their dreams, one encore at a time — also fuels the lyrics that appear on Folk Hop N Roll, a record whose songs spin stories of struggle, triumph, and all points in between.

"This record was made for the live show," Akers promises. "Our shows are all about the experience we share with our fans. We know that people work everyday jobs or go to school, and they're dealing with life, and yet they're still choosing to spend the night with us. We don't take that lightly. We give them an experience. We throw an absolute rage. And all the songs were made with that in mind. They're fun, carefree, and youthful, and we live our lives that way, too."

Anthemic and wildly creative, Folk Hop N Roll is unlike anything else in modern music. It's a rulebreaking record, with Judah & the Lion creating a sound that belongs entirely to them. From the earthy stomp of roots music to the bold bounce of hip-hop, Folk Hop N Roll casts a wide net, proof that Judah & the Lion — who are now four releases into their career — have developed quite the roar.

Judah & the Lion followed the release of Folk Hop N Roll with a massive tour spanning most of 2016. Late in the year, after being named iHeartRadio’s Artist on the Verge, their single “Take It All Back” began to climb the ranks at Alternative Radio, eventually culminating in a three week stint in the #1 spot to kick off 2017. In tandem with their first #1 song, Judah & the Lion also kicked off a tour as support for Twenty One Pilots which brought them to arenas  across the US, such as the Old National Centre. Inspired by how their genre-blending style was connecting with fans, Judah & the Lion headed back into the studio in early 2017 to record 4 brand new songs dubbed the Going to Mars Collection, which, when combined with Folk Hop N Roll, make up Folk Hop N Roll Deluxe. In support of the Deluxe Edition, the band embarked on The Going to Mars Tour throughout much of 2017 and beyond– taking them on their biggest headlining run to date. In between, they hit the road for select dates with Kaleo and hit amphitheaters this summer with Jimmy Eat World and Incubus.

The rebooted version of the album includes the band’s follow up to “Take It All Back,” the equally high energy and anthemic “Suit and Jacket” which debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September and hit Top 5 at Alternative Radio. With no intention of slowing down anytime soon, Judah & the Lion is set to embark on yet another massive headlining run in 2018 with their new single “Going to Mars” hitting airwaves soon.

I'mma tell our kids about this someday!!!

by Jess on 10/7/22Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

We had an awesome night filled with music, food, and beautiful weather! This was my first concert at Avondale Brewing Co., and I hope to go back! We loved The National Parks & Judah and the Lion. I was so excited to see them since hearing about it in April, and the experience exceeded my expectations! My only suggestion would be to build the grass on a slant so short people like me can see from the back! Jumping and dancing helped me see the bands, too :-) Thank you for hosting, Avondale Brewing Co!

Avondale Brewing and Music under the Stars!

by Sunflower on 10/7/22Avondale Brewing Co. - Birmingham

This was our first concert at ABC and our first time hearing Judah and the Lion live. We live in Atlanta and made the drive over and it was worth every mile! The ease of purchasing tickets through Ticketmaster, the reminders of the show, putting the tickets on our phones and in our Apple wallets...all was easy. The venue is fantastic! There were plenty of beverage tents available and an amazing food truck. Having plenty of porta potties is always plus...let's get real! The stage was incredible and the sound and lights were perfect. This will not be our last time here for a show. So glad we took that chance and made the trek. We loved The National Parks also. Just a winning night all the way around!

    Amazing return to live shows!

by Harrisean on 9/27/22The Factory - Chesterfield

It had been 2 years and 357 days since Judah And The Lion last performed live in the St. Louis area. What an amazing return it was! This time in a venue new to the band and myself. The Factory in Chesterfield. The venue was impressive. Very big, very nice and plenty of free parking available. The stage is 60 feet long which makes it difficult to find a bad place to experience the show from the pit. You don't see Judah And The Lion in concert. You live an energetic, musical experience. These guys are all so energetic and talented. They put 100% into the show. They have always made their fans feel like family. Judah has a way of making you feel like he's talking directly to you while on stage. Amidst all that they never take themselves too seriously. They are not afraid to, at times, totally make fools of themselves on stage. Of course, the fans eat it up. Great band. Great show. Go see these guys!

5th JDL show, and it was not there best

by Beehive on 9/26/22The Factory - Chesterfield

The venue was very good, new theatre called The Factory. Getting into show, the venue was very accessible for bathrooms and bar area. Great venue!! JDL did not bring the same energy they have in previous shows. Played too many from new album vs. more popular songs from earlier albums. Still a good show, I still love JDL, I just would've enjoyed listening to more of the older music they have created.

This was an absolutely amazing concert! The open band Smallpools was great even though I hadn’t heard them before. Judah and the Lion was great! One of the best concerts I have ever been too! The Factory was a great venue and did a great job with the sound. I hope they are back at the Factory again next year!

    Loved seeing them! VIP package

    by J. P. on 9/26/22

Wished the VIP experience could have happened while the opening act performed (vs 4 hrs ahead of the show). Would have liked to meet them- but we have a 1.5- 2 hr drive in to STL and my son is in school. Could not leave early bc his education comes first. Still we were happy to see one of our favorites perform. #ourlove is one of our favorites but sadly- they didn’t play it. :( Regardless- we have nothing but love for them.

    Best band in the world

by Morgan B. on 9/26/22The Factory - Chesterfield

Judah and the Lion never fail to deliver an energizing, exciting, and just plain fun show. I felt like I’d run a marathon after the lights came back up! It feels like one big family celebrating life’s up’s and down’s together. Truly a special night. If you haven’t gotten the chance to see this band live yet, do it! You will have the best night of your life.

We’ve got spirit for Judah & The Lion!

by RachelL on 9/26/22The Factory - Chesterfield

I would have gone to this show multiple days in a row if it was available! I’ve now seen Judah & The Lion 4 times and they always deliver, both with excellent music and a fun audience experience. They clearly love being in front of a crowd and it shows. The Factory venue was also great. It was easy access, seamless parking and ticketing, and then inside we were completely happy with the seating, sound, and drink options. All in all, a perfect night!

    Judah & the Lion

by BcBacon on 9/23/22House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

Once again, Judah & the Lion did not disappoint. The House of Blues was a great venue to watch as it has such an intimate feel. I appreciated the cover songs and the slower versions of their hits in acoustic format. And the Suit and Jacket was very well done. smallpool was a very good opener and can't wait to see more of them in the future. It was cool to see them brought up on stage in the middle of Judah's set to have both bands play a couple songs. A clean cut Judah was a bit of a shock (I'm sure I'll get over it with time... I get that Judah doesn't shave or dress for me), but the music speaks for itself. Can't wait for the next time to see them play.
