Journey in Concert

As the original legends of arena rock, few bands in existence put on a show quite like Journey. Anchored by singer Arnel Pineda's thrilling vocals and Neal Schon's unstoppable guitars, the band continues to show fans, both old and new, exactly how it's done as they tear through marathon sets of classics like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms." After a short break from their relentless tour schedule, they're primed to blow minds again in 2014, pairing up with Steve Miller Band for select dates that are sure to be the stuff of classic rock legend for years to come.

Journey Background

San Francisco-born Journey is the quintessential arena rock band. Assembled in 1973 from the ashes of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch, the band has since gone through a number of line-up changes — only stalwart guitarist Neal Schon has been with every incarnation. Despite a rotating roster, the band has sold 47 million albums in the US, and is consistently named one of the ten best American rock bands in history. While the '70s and '80s provided them with the most commercial success, their current manifestation with Filipino singer Arnel Pineda has given them truly global breadth.

"This was an amazing two-hour boogie with Journey at their best! Lead guitarist Neal Schon's tenacity on the guitar was incredible!"

Journey and Styx were at the top of their game

by DaveARockFan on 10/6/11Santa Barbara Bowl - Santa Barbara

Was looking forward to Styx more than Journey, and they didn't disappoint. Played the hits and had the crowd on their feet most of the show. Journey was great as well - their new lead singer really puts his heart and soul into it.

    Amazing Night

by CoffeyBean on 10/6/11Santa Barbara Bowl - Santa Barbara

My first time at Santa Barbara Bowl and I had an amazing night. I was really scared I would be disappointed in the fact Steve Perry wasn't singing but they sounded great without him. One thing I would recommend if you have never been to Santa Barbara Bowl is to get a cab or some sort or transportation to drop you off and pick you up. Parking is scary bad. We ate at a great Italian restaurant called Emilio's and had a cab come pick us up and drop us off. Well worth it! Concerts under the stars are always good. I would say the crowd was around 40 give or take 10 years and everyone was singing, standing, and having a great time. Sometimes when I go to concerts with people my own age they all sit around like tired old people tapping their feet.

    Journey was a disappointment!

by Anonymous on 10/6/11Comfort Dental Amphitheater - Englewood

I was so frustrated with the Journey, Foreigner and Nightranger concert on 10/1. Nightranger was great but Journey was awful! Wish I would've known BEFORE I bought the tickets that Steve Perry was no longer the lead singer! The sound was awful as well! Then we spent the majority of the time waiting in line for the restroom (getting there was like hearding cattle!) or the beer line! $20.75 for 2 beers! Beers are not even that much at the Broncos or Rockes games! We spent $80 for 8 beers and $160 on tickets. What a rip off! Trying to get in an out of the venue was a nightmare as well. I will NEVER go to another concert again at UN-Comfort Dental.

Styx rocked the bowl with high energy great sound performance. Journey was not up to the old standards with a miss-match of style, presentation and quality.

    Foreigner Rocked!

by Alejandra123 on 10/5/11Hard Rock Casino Albuquerque Presents The Pavilion - Albuquerque

This concert was great except for the fact that I bought the VIP experience and I ended up having to pay for the Real Show TIckets when I got to the concert. Unfortunately, I was not the only person who went through this ordeal! There were about 12 more people who had the same experience. Also, there were not enough restrooms to accommodate everyone and the lines were huge! The concert itself was great, but I ended up enjoying Foreigner better than Journey because of all the Instrumental breaks Journey kept taking.

    Foreigner was the best.

by Jblackstone on 10/5/11Gexa Energy Pavilion - Dallas

Night Ranger and Foreigner really rocked. Journey was good. Could have done without all the super long over done, did I say long?, guitar solos.

    Journey, Foreighner & Night Ranger

by GonzoSATX on 10/5/11AT&T Center - San Antonio

Great concert. Played all my favorites. Only problem was acoustics. The volume was up a little too high and caused sound quality distortion. Loud is good, but not at the sacrifice of music clarity.

    Journey WAS forgettable

by wy0467 on 10/5/111-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre At the Florida State Fairgrounds - Tampa

You know, I was really looking forward to this concert. I saw Motley Crue & Poison in July and it was very good. This concert...a mixed bag. Night Ranger was fine. Nice to hear their old songs again. Foreigner was good. Even though Mick Jones wasnt there... they did a good job. Actually, they were the best part of the evening. Then came Neal Schon and the 4 other guys. Wow, does this guy have an ego or what? He kicks Steve Perry out of the band, (or Steve quit, whatever). Even so, it was obvious from the first song that this was Neals baby and boy was he going to make sure everyone in the arena knew it. There is nothing wrong with a guitar solo. Mick Mars had a couple of solos and he is certainly as good a guitarist as Neal, (better in my opinion). But then came the next song, and the next. And there is Neal, doing what seemed like a 5 minute solo. WE GET IT NEAL. You are the big dog. Enough already. Here is a newsflash... NOBODY CARES! Its like performers that feel the need to tell us how smart they are, who to vote for etc. Get a clue! Just shut up and sing. In Neals case, 10 solos (or more) in a night was a joke. Future reference, skip a few solos and let everyone enjoy the songs they grew up with. Nobody cares what weird and unusal sounds you can make your guitar spout out. They didnt buy a ticket to hear it.. trust me. Then of course, the lead singers, which is really why people come to see the bands. I know this will break your heart Neal, but unless your name is Slash, Keith Richards or Eric Clapton, people could basically care less who the guitar player is. Jack Blades was again.. fine. Not fantastic, but it was nice to hear a Damn Yankees song after all these years. It was probably the best song of their set actually. The guy from Foreigner, (and NO I dont know his name) was pretty good. He connected with the audience, hit the notes, and generally has the stage presence that makes for a good show. I was worried about that actually, because I didnt think anyone could really replace Lou Gramm and while I would have preferred to see Lou, this guy was pretty good. Then came "Journey".. using that name loosely. I realize Jonathan Cain and Ross Valory were there, (as a side note, I think I saw Ross giving Neal a dirty look during one of his solos... dont worry Ross, after his 7th or 8th one, everyone else was also!) but it was obvious even in the concert that these guys have NO say so in the show. Neal is gracious enough to let them play, but thats about it. But.... I digress. As for the the lead singer on stage when Journey came out, if the Foreigner guy "gets it" the short guy yelling notes for Neal Schons band doesnt. Its not his fault really. The Foreigner guy does an ample job filling Lou Gramms shoes but the short guy just doesnt have it. He can sing the notes, (well.. I can see him singing Journey songs in maybe a Karaoke bar somewhere, but thats another story), but he has no stage presence. I swear I thought I was watching a martial arts exhibition on stage. That or a 5 ft tall David Lee Roth maybe... I was half expecting to see Diamond Daves patented high leg kick!! Come to think of it, Dave kind of looked like Richard Simmons doing that didnt he... hmm.. again I digress. Look, as I said, it isnt the short guys fault. The Foreigner guy provides a reasonable facimile of Lou Gramm, something I thought couldnt be done. Well, I can say now, NO ONE can replace Steve Perry. He not only has the pipes, he has the presence. And that is a combination Neal is never going to find. I wont see Journey again but I would see Steve Perry in a minute. He recently said about getting back with Neals Band, "The longer we are apart, the more apparent it is we should not be together". Thats a shame because that music gave so much to so many. The egos will obviously keep all of us from reliving those bygone days. Together Journey made magic. Apart....not so much.

    Foreigner Rocked!!

by TNTMom3 on 10/5/11Comfort Dental Amphitheatre - Englewood

Foreigner rocked the show!!!! They did an awesome job and sounded just like they did back in the day. Still just as great as ever. I enjoyed Journey but not quite as much as Foreigner. The band is just not the same without the voice of Steve Perry. I know things change but this is just my opinion.

    Who was Journey's sound guy?

by PKDave on 10/4/11Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

I'd rank that concert in this order: Journey third, Night Ranger second, and Foreigner the best. Night Ranger brought a ton of energy to the audience, and performed amazingly. Foreigner also performed awesomely, and had a great stage show as well. Journey really let me down. Their sound was aweful; I went to see a Journey concert, not a Neal Schon concert. Guitar drowned out most of the music. Arnel brought a lot of energy, and really brought the sound of Steve Perry to the stage, only the guitar drowned him out A LOT. Whoever engineered their sound should retire and let a music lover bring the WHOLE BAND to the stage.

Journey & Guests was a fun show!

by BeeRise on 10/4/11Comfort Dental Amphitheatre - Englewood

The October 1st Journey show at Comfort Dental Amphitheatre in Denver was definitely a fun show. I have been listening to Journey and Foreigner since the late 1970's and never made it to a concert. So, hearing the great setlists produced by those two bands was way cool! Arnel Pineda (Journey) does have an incredible set of pipes. The biggest disappointment was the lack of respect given to Night Ranger. These guys are awesome! Three of the original five band members are still jammin' - yet the organizers of this show gave NR a less than stellar sound system and NO BIG SCREEN COVERAGE. What a shame! Night Ranger: please come visit Glenwood Springs when you finish this tour.

    Journey needs Tweeking

    by guitarstrings2 on 10/4/11Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

Great to go to a sold out classic rock concert. Night Ranger rocked as predicted. Foreigner was exceptional. Note for note they were great. I've always been a Journey fan and believe the new singer has a good voice but his timing with the lyrics has a lot of room for improvement. Original band members do not need to make it their own. We want to hear it as close to original as possible

    Night Ranger!!!!

by HappyTickets on 10/4/11Comfort Dental Amphitheatre - Englewood

We had a great time catching these legendary bands, but I have to say that Night Ranger stole the show! We loved the new song and danced to the old ones! They were high energy, and so appreciative of the audience! The only bad note to the night was the womens restroom accomodations, there should be more restrooms!!!!!!

    Foreigner Stole the Show!

by SB84 on 10/4/11Hard Rock Casino Albuquerque Presents The Pavilion - Albuquerque

If you think about it, all of us 80's and 90's rockers are starting to show our age just a bit. I'm not ready for Geritol and fiber drinks but I'm not stomping around in the mosh pit either. Last Friday my wife and were treated to some great 80's music. Night Ranger really set the tone. They were high energy, their sound was great, and Jack Blades was "on". Unfortunately their set was way short. I would have liked to hear more but it was time for Foreigner. Well maybe the name Foreigner is kind of misleading; though they sounded GREAT, played all of the Foreigner standards: Urgent, Jukebox Hero.... There was not a single original member on stage. And though they were all "Foreign" to me, they put on a great show complete with a High School choir for I want to know what love is. When Journey took the stage I was ready for a nostalgic trip down memory highway... what I got was a bumpy ride down a muddy back road. The sound for the headlining act was... well horrible. Vocals faded in and out guitar solos lost in a muddy mix. The band put on a great show. Arnel Pineda did a masterful job at the front and as always Neal Schon did what he has been doing and doing well for over thirty years.

    Foreigner stole the show!

    by Jdub3000 on 10/4/11Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

We didn't arrive in time for Nightranger, so I can't attest to how good they were. The venue sucked because they oversold the tickets and there was literally NOWHERE to sit. Foreigner rocked the house - they are still the best band from this era to see live! They always put on a great show. I wish they headlined more often. I know there is more to be said for their performance, but words fail me - they were just straight up awesome. :) Journey was completely forgettable. I was disappointed, because I love Journey.... We saw them about 2 years ago in the CWMP (I believe they came with Heart and Cheap Trick) - and they were awesome! The new singer sounded spot-on. As the crowd was leaving afterward, they had us pumped, people were still screaming and partying on the way to their cars. This year it was different and very subdued on the mass exodus after the show. The singer wasn't hitting all the notes, and they played a bunch of filler that few people knew. Where were the hits????

It seemed as though the venue was overly packed (in the lawn/GA seats) which was uncomfortable. The sound was great and overall and great crowd.
