You know, I was really looking forward to this concert. I saw Motley Crue & Poison in July and it was very good. This concert...a mixed bag. Night Ranger was fine. Nice to hear their old songs again. Foreigner was good. Even though Mick Jones wasnt there... they did a good job. Actually, they were the best part of the evening. Then came Neal Schon and the 4 other guys. Wow, does this guy have an ego or what? He kicks Steve Perry out of the band, (or Steve quit, whatever). Even so, it was obvious from the first song that this was Neals baby and boy was he going to make sure everyone in the arena knew it. There is nothing wrong with a guitar solo. Mick Mars had a couple of solos and he is certainly as good a guitarist as Neal, (better in my opinion). But then came the next song, and the next. And there is Neal, doing what seemed like a 5 minute solo. WE GET IT NEAL. You are the big dog. Enough already. Here is a newsflash... NOBODY CARES! Its like performers that feel the need to tell us how smart they are, who to vote for etc. Get a clue! Just shut up and sing. In Neals case, 10 solos (or more) in a night was a joke. Future reference, skip a few solos and let everyone enjoy the songs they grew up with. Nobody cares what weird and unusal sounds you can make your guitar spout out. They didnt buy a ticket to hear it.. trust me.
Then of course, the lead singers, which is really why people come to see the bands. I know this will break your heart Neal, but unless your name is Slash, Keith Richards or Eric Clapton, people could basically care less who the guitar player is. Jack Blades was again.. fine. Not fantastic, but it was nice to hear a Damn Yankees song after all these years. It was probably the best song of their set actually. The guy from Foreigner, (and NO I dont know his name) was pretty good. He connected with the audience, hit the notes, and generally has the stage presence that makes for a good show. I was worried about that actually, because I didnt think anyone could really replace Lou Gramm and while I would have preferred to see Lou, this guy was pretty good. Then came "Journey".. using that name loosely. I realize Jonathan Cain and Ross Valory were there, (as a side note, I think I saw Ross giving Neal a dirty look during one of his solos... dont worry Ross, after his 7th or 8th one, everyone else was also!) but it was obvious even in the concert that these guys have NO say so in the show. Neal is gracious enough to let them play, but thats about it. But.... I digress. As for the the lead singer on stage when Journey came out, if the Foreigner guy "gets it" the short guy yelling notes for Neal Schons band doesnt. Its not his fault really. The Foreigner guy does an ample job filling Lou Gramms shoes but the short guy just doesnt have it. He can sing the notes, (well.. I can see him singing Journey songs in maybe a Karaoke bar somewhere, but thats another story), but he has no stage presence. I swear I thought I was watching a martial arts exhibition on stage. That or a 5 ft tall David Lee Roth maybe... I was half expecting to see Diamond Daves patented high leg kick!! Come to think of it, Dave kind of looked like Richard Simmons doing that didnt he... hmm.. again I digress.
Look, as I said, it isnt the short guys fault. The Foreigner guy provides a reasonable facimile of Lou Gramm, something I thought couldnt be done. Well, I can say now, NO ONE can replace Steve Perry. He not only has the pipes, he has the presence. And that is a combination Neal is never going to find. I wont see Journey again but I would see Steve Perry in a minute. He recently said about getting back with Neals Band, "The longer we are apart, the more apparent it is we should not be together". Thats a shame because that music gave so much to so many. The egos will obviously keep all of us from reliving those bygone days. Together Journey made magic. Apart....not so much.
