JONATHAN BUTLER IN CONCERT:
Singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler became an apartheid hero in the β70s when his teenage debut single became the first song by a black artist to receive airplay on white radio stations in his native South Africa. Nearly 40 years later, he remains an enduring icon of positive social change through music, gracing audiences with his uplifting voice on inspiring performances of his early South African music and later classics like βLies.β At his 2013 dates, Butler was joined on stage by his daughter, whose continued presence on tour as a backing singer ensures more spiritually satisfying shows in 2014.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in apartheid-era Cape Town, the precocious young Butler showed musical promise from an early age, beginning to tour at just age seven before going on to achieve success as a teen recording idol. After a stint with South African jazz-rock legends Pacific Express, Butler signed to Jive records, relocating to the UK to continue writing and recording. He achieved his biggest international success in 1987 with βLies,β a Grammy-nominated hit that landed at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of his decade-spanning career, Butler has released more than 20 albums, exploring a broad range of styles including jazz, pop, and gospel. Following the release of a Christmas album in 2013, Butler is once again the road for a string of highly anticipated North American dates.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

βMusician, singer, songwriter Jonathan Butler provides a solid evening of entertainment featuring songs he has written, many made famous by other stars, but superbly covered by this great artist. His musicianship is stellar and his voice always a delight.β
βIf Jonathan Butler ever comes close to your location, you must go. These days his daughter, Jody Butler, is performing with him. She's an unexpected treat.β
We enjoyed the show. Wish Jonathan Bulter sang more of old music.
Jonathan Butler was awesome! My wife and I saw him back in 1994 and he continues to deliver an outstanding performance 25 years later. This was an excellent show! His performance is genuine and he definitely entertains from beginning to end!
Excellent!!! Performance was a little shorter than I would have preferred but outstanding nonetheless.
The concert was wonderful. The entertainers were very engaging and sounded great. Everyone in the auditorium looked like they were all having a good time.
Jonathan Butler gave one of the best performances my wife and I have seen in a few years. Great vocalist and even better guitar player. His cover of several Burt Bacharach songs, which are on his latest album were mind-blowing.
Enjoyed the entire experience. Great crowd, great venue for jazz entertainment
Started on time. Both bands were great. I expected a great show and got one.
Loved Mr. Butler as always. His band is great too. This was my first time seeing Pieces of a Dream. Each piece of that dream was awesome. They put on a great show. Would definitely do this show again.
The ushers seated persons in the wrong seats. The aisles are too narrow. Too much jostling around to accommodate the late arrivals which detracts from enjoying a first and wonderful first act.
We had a wonderful time. The auditorium is so beautiful, both performances was A+ and the people were so nice.
The show was spectator! Pieces Of A Dream was good, but Jonathan Butler, was awesome! The line to the cocktail bar, was outrages, it wrapped around the lobby. The McFarland auditorium is a great venue, easy in and out, if you go early and leave about 10 before the show.
McFarland great venue with good sound. Excellent musicians.
Both Pieces of a Dream and Jonathan Butler put on tremendous shows! Great music, wonderful musicians, and great interaction with the artists. The McFarlin Auditorium was the perfect venue for these performances, just the right size for an intimate night of smooth jazz. Can't wait until they come back to town!
He started most of the songs in his native tongue...it was a tribute to his homeland.
Pieces of a Dream Prince tribute & Arlington Jones keyboard solo & Johnathan Butler South African tribute. The evening was electrifying!!!
Fantastic venue with convenient parking. Pieces of a Dream opened the show and brought the energy as they always do. Then Jonathan Butler with a smaller ensemble was so tight and filled the room with his unique sound and vocals. Best concert I've seen in a while.
It's so refreshing to have someone who sings as lovely as he. Pieces of a Dream were also just as amazing. Look forward to seeing him/them again next year.
As usual JB was amazing!ππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎππΎ
Well, we got lucky with this concert because we heard about it kind of late so we thought the seating would be poor. To our surprise every seat in the theater was a good seat. His (Jonathan Butler) performance was very very good and uplifting. This was my wife's first Jazz concert and she was thoroughly satisfied with both performers. I think it really surprised her to finally put a face to the music that she had been hearing for the past 18 years. We enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you.
My Plus One and I had a wonderful time! My only regret was seating, being 6β4β, had no leg room to stretch, very uncomfortable; however, the music made up for that and most of all, my Plus One was very happy π
