    The Johnny Clegg Band Entertained!

    by eljefe91 on 7/10/12Howard Theatre - Washington

Fantastic show in a unique venue--The Howard Theater in NW Washington DC. The dinner-seating arrangement tended to subdue the mostly over-40 (maybe even over-50)crowd. By the time they played "I Call Your Name" the really energetic folks were in the aisles dancing. Johnny is a great story teller and explained the origins for many of the songs. He played a healthy smattering of songs from his latest album--Human--which I had just purchased on iTunes for $10. I think the album is worth the investment. I hope Johnny Clegg comes back to North America for another tour as I will certainly pay to see him again.

    Johnny Clegg - Remarkable!

by Blatant on 7/9/12Howard Theatre - Washington

Just like fine wine, the man gets better with time. It had been almost 20 years since the last time I saw him perform. He hasn't lost a note! And he still moves like a twenty year old!! And what a mind he has. An amazing performer. If you ever have the opportunity to attend one of his concerts, do yourself a huge favor and go!

    Johnny Clegg was unsurpassed

by PatrioticSouthAfricaninDC on 7/8/12Howard Theatre - Washington

The Johnny Clegg show at the Howard Theatre was energetic, inspiring and good value for money. I like the venue and throughly enjoyed the performance. Although the seats downstairs appear closer, one has to turn your neck sideways as the tables do not face the stage. I would recommend balcony seats for ergonomic reasons. Please bring Johnny and his band back soon and often!!!!! I wish there was more Zulu dancing

    He remembered

    by 60sFlowerChild on 7/8/12Howard Theatre - Washington

The Johnny Clegg show at the Howard Theater was all I hoped for. This was my first time at the Howard Theater, so I was pleasantly surprised by the dinner seating that went all the way up to the edge of the stage. I was in the second row of tables to the left facing the stage. As a solo diner, I was joined later by several people I didn't know and we had a nice time getting to know each other. Johnny was as wonderful as I remembered after 30 years, telling stories of his life in Africa and traveling around the world, his former career as an anthropology professor, and generally making a strong connection with the audience. He played a number of tunes from his 2011 CD "Human" and old favorites as well. He stayed to sign CDs after the show. In my brief conversation with him, I mentioned seeing him in the 1980s at a hole-in-the-wall in Austin TX called Liberty Lunch. A concrete slab, cinder block walls and a tin roof, with a bar and two very nasty bathrooms. When I mentioned the location, he started to describe it - he truly remembered playing there after all these years and all the places he has performed. I was amazed.

More people should see this guy. Simply amazing performance in a great venue. Songs spanned about 30 years of work, up to the current CD.

Johnny Clegg @ The Howard Theater

by WhiteZulu on 7/8/12Howard Theatre - Washington

My fifth time seeing Johnny, his energy never seems to diminish. Now in the second leg of his "Human Tour", the dates hereafter were added. On the west coast he is performing with Ladysmith Black Mambanza which I regret I will miss. I saw this tour in three venues and he has kept the shows fresh by changing out his setlist. You won't just be entertained, you will be educated in a variety of cultures and international politics presented through short explanations and the first person narrative in his lyrics. If you like world music, you will love Johnny Clegg. And if you're already fan, you'll be pleased to know you will here selections from his new album as well as fan favorites such as Dela', Scatterlings of Africa, Cruel Crazy Beautiful World, Great Heart and I Call Your Name. Go, go go!

Johnny Clegg Songwriter Deluxe / Master Performer

    by RickyB7709 on 4/26/12Aladdin Theatre 04/30/11 & The Shedd 05/01/11 - Portland and Eugene

Johnny Clegg's performance identities are many. Johnny Clegg & Jaluka Johnny Clegg and Savuka and now just his name headlining. I have seen him every time he has come to Portland in the last 20 years including last year in Portland and Eugene. His talent just seems to increase with his years. This is a concert you can rock and dance at and you don't need to know anything about Clegg except that he is from South Africa and that he was politically active through the apartheid years. Because he had a band full of Zulu African Musicians, he was banned often in his own country so he would play with only word of mouth publicity on College Campuses to inspire equality. He can tell a poignant story as good as Dylan can in song, and has the aesthetic feel for his audience of Sting or Mark Knopfler. But the music, oh the music! Dela is a transformational experience, ("I've been waiting for you all my life, waiting for Redemption") everytime you hear it. Johnny's Cultural Zula Dances (quite a challenge at his age) is still an inspiration, proving he can still bust a move most of us could only hope for. If you want to hear rock and pop mixed with the best elements from African and American music, This is the concert of a lifetime. He will be in Portland this August Outdoors and you will discover the answer to why 'the dog howls at the moon'!!!!!

Johnny Clegg still has his touch.

by Tijj on 5/2/11Aladdin Theater - Portland

I remember Johnny with Jaluka and Savuka from when I lived in South Africa during the 80's. He has maintained his edge. Great vocals and band. I was especially impressed with the saxophonist. The audience really got into it and were dancing in the aisles. Great performance and interesting anecdotes from his past.

Johnny Clegg Band rocked the house!

    by Pat2011 on 5/2/11Aladdin Theater - Portland

This was one of those rare concerts when most everyone was up and dancing in the aisles, young and old alike. The energy was so high! And he seemed to hit upon all his best songs, judging by the responses from the crowd. Also loved the back-up musicians and dancers!!!

Johhny Clegg delivers time and time again!!!!

by AfricanDream on 4/17/11The Ark - Ann Arbor

I really loved seeing Johhny Clegg at the Ark! They all played so many songs that spans so many generations of time. I love how he told the story of their bands journey. The new CD " Human" is out of this world. The crowd was also very awesome as everyone got into the music.I don't think I have stopped grinning since seeing them. Truly a dream come true for me.

    Johnny Clegg at the Ark

by lecruze on 4/17/11The Ark - Ann Arbor

One of the top 3 shows I have ever seen. Sound was perfect - incredible energy. The front line has been with him since apartheid days and they are still having fun and creating great new songs. FANTASTIC SHOW!

Johnny Clegg Band is not to be missed

by ProfSteve on 4/17/11The Ark - Ann Arbor

Do you know any artist that has released 19 albums, all of which have been at least gold records, was a lecturer in anthropology, is a Knight and has received an honorary law degree, and has had Nelson Mandela dance with him on stage to celebrate his birthday? Johnny Clegg is this and more. There is no one I know of that hears his music and doesn't immediately fall in love with his Celtic-Zulu fusion. Yes, I said Celtic-Zulu fusion. It sounds odd, but it is amazing stuff. It is a little bit pop, a little bit rock, a little reggae, a little latin. A lot of Zulu. As a performer, he's at the top of his art. This is a show not to be missed.
