John Oliver is an Emmy and Writer's Guild Award-winning writer, comedian, and host of the HBO show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. On his occasional breaks from television, John returns to his first love of stand-up, performing to sold-out venues around the world.
From 2006-2013, he was a correspondent on the multi-award winning The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, guest-hosting the show for two months during Stewart's absence in 2013.
After co-hosting the weekly satirical podcast The Bugle with Andy Zaltzman until 2015 and starring in his first stand-up special John Oliver: Terrifying Times, John went on to host four seasons of his own stand-up series for Comedy Central, John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show, which featured a handpicked selection of his favorite comedians.
Oliver voices the character Zazu in the 2019 Disney film The Lion King and will voice a character in the 2019 Paramount film Amusement Park, following previous guest roles including Danger Mouse, Community, The Smurfs, The Smurfs 2, Bob's Burgers, The Simpsons, The Detour, and Rick & Morty.
Very witty, hilarious performer. Totally entertained for the entire show.
John Oliver was great, and the opening comedian too. I'd never been to a comedy show before, this was so good i'm afraid to go to another one. his 'snuckleme' pronounciation was funny. they referenced the daily show, but i think he's hilarious on the Colbert report too...
John Oliver is a masterful storyteller. He creates drama and energy, making the audience laugh at him and themselves. Sharp. Witty. Informed. Hilariously funny. He effectively insulted all of us as Americans, while at the same time building a sense of American pride in the room - it was genius to watch! And throughout it all, he was closely in tune with his audience, adapting as he went, making us feel as though he actually gave a damn about us. Best entertainment I've experienced in a long time...would recommend to all liberal-minded, Daily Show fans.
My husband and I are fans of the Daily Show, so we were interested in seeing John Oliver in person, but wondered if he could be funny for a full hour show. It was a great show and we both really enjoyed it. John was laugh-out-loud funny, but also had some insightful comments about human nature, Americans and America.
I've been to many, many comedy shows and I have to say, hands down, John Oliver delivered the best show yet. I heartily recommend to anyone who is at least a little politically current and can appreciate true genius.
John was exactly as I would have imagined. I love him on the Daily Show and his fun personality carries over to his stand-up. I would go see him again.
His opener was decent, but John was fantastic - really connected with the crowd and played a long set with lots of new material. He never mentioned his podcast The Bugle, which was surprising. If you like John's comedy, check out The Bugle on iTunes. Might want to skip The Love Guru, though.
First of all, who is his booking agent??? Snoqualmie, let alone a casino is not the right venue for Oliver, I understand that he was there before, but there is a certain audience and expectation associated with The Daily Show and would get his "fall of the empire" bit and Snoqualmie is not it! The show was not bad, my expectation was somehow heightened due to his association with The Daily Show, but the show could have been better if perhaps he had fed off the audience more.
John Oliver met and exceeded expectation. Completely worth the terrible venue of Snoqualmie Casino. The seating was very tight, and for $50 you had the luxury of having a complete stranger nearly in your lap. Only an act like John Oliver would EVER bring me back to a show at that venue.
The show was so funny! John did an excellent job keeping the audience in stitches. My husband and I don't go out to many events. This was a special birthday occasion which turned out to be a fantastic night. I've always loved John Oliver on the Daily Show and this just solidified that love!!!! Great Show.
The show started with an opening comedian who was great. He warmed up the audience for about 15 minutes before introducing John Oliver. John Oliver came out cool and casual. I thought he might do more political comedy, but his mix of topics was perfect. There was one problem that was incredibly embarrasing and that had to do with the spotlight following John across and around the stage. It didn't matter if he was standing still or running across the stage while telling some story, the person running the spotlight could not follow him. Several times they cut his head out of the light when he was standing still, and when he was running across the stage the lighting was painful. Finally, John Oliver even said something about it, twice. Come on Portland, we can do better than that. But even the poor lighting couldn't take away from a very funny show.
Never have I seen a comedian do two solid hour of stand up. I think he got so into the crowd that the was putting out everything he had. Even his responses to hecklers was outstanding!
Sometimes when you go to an event you wonder if what you see on t.v. will be as great when you see it live. John Oliver lives up to the promise and exceeds! If you have the opportunity its definitely worth it! My sides were aching the next day I laughed so hard!
John Oliver is such a great performer and so much more than just a stand up comic. His presentation was spot on and his wit is impressive. He did a great job connecting with the audience and could read the response of the theater and play on it. He was so funny - I loved the show!!
Lucky enough to get front row tickets to his sold out show in Portland. Absolutely loved him! Most highly recommended! Very talented! Will definitely see again!
The Portland show was fabulous! John had great material, worked in local humor, and worked well with the audience. I think we surprised him with a few things. My cheeks hurt from laughing so hard. Will definitely see him again if he comes through town.
His interaction w/ the audience was almost as good as the prepared stand up!
This show was better than I ever could have imagined. I have been a fan of John Oliver on The Daily Show and his podcast "the Bugle" and this show just made my love for his comedy that much greater.
Smart humor, wonderful delivery, and consistently funny from start to finish. Can't wait to see him again next time he's in town
John Oliver was FANTASTIC! I've never seen a comedy show in a larger venue like this, but it still felt pretty intimate. We had a wonderful time.
