John 5 on Tour

American guitarist John 5 has played with some of the biggest names in music, sitting in on everything from bluegrass and flamenco to metal and hard rock. Truly a guitarist's guitarist, the stage veteran has the distinction of being one of hard rock's most recognizable players. On tour with his solo group John 5 & the Creatures, he plays a mix of hard rock, bluegrass, country, and prog.

A lauded performer, John 5 has developed a style that's completely unique — unsurprising considering who he's played with. He's had residencies with the likes of Marilyn Manson and David Lee Roth, and has performed with Wilson Phillips, Salt-n-Pepa, Rick Springfield, Garbage, and Alice Cooper. He's toured with Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford as 2wo, he played in k.d. lang's 1996 and ‘97 world tours, and he's performed at Ozzfest with Rob Zombie.

Additionally, John 5 landed on the U.S. Heatseekers chart for his albums The Art of Malice, God Told Me To, and Careful With That Axe. In concert, as his fingers execute an array of styles, audiences can expect to be treated to an amazingly eclectic performance from this master guitarist.

John 5 Background

John 5 was born John William Lowery in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in 1971. Growing up with parents who were supportive of his interest in music, the budding guitarist was inspired by the musicians he saw on Hee Haw, like Buck Owens, Roy Clark, and Jimmy Henley. He wanted to follow in their footsteps, so he headed west and began playing as a session guitarist in L.A. at age 17.

Around that time, he started his first group, Alligator Soup, which led to him getting recognized by Whitesnake's Rudy Sarzo, who invited him to join the band Sun King. Soon thereafter, he was playing with Lita Ford and opening for Kiss, a band with whom he'd maintain long-lasting personal and professional relationships.

Lowery then joined ex–Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford — a legend in heavy metal — on industrial metal project 2wo. The band's second album blew up, receiving a loving remix from Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, who also released the remix on his Nothing Records label.

In 1998, Lowery teamed up with David Lee Roth, former frontman of Van Halen. With Roth, he recorded the 1998 album DLR Band, going on to collaborate and work as songwriter for the vocalist. At the same time, Lowery began playing in Marilyn Manson's live band (where he was dubbed John 5), joining Manson's Mechanical Albums tour and performing at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2005, John 5 formed his own band, Loser, and also began working with cult rock artist Rob Zombie, with whom he recorded, toured, and even shared the stage at Ozzfest.

    A really incredible show

by Amazing show! on 2/23/24Tally Ho Theater - Leesburg

John 5 was just amazing! The Tally Ho Theater in Leesburg, Virginia is a small venue and it felt intimate; John 5 was really great with the audience and interacted with us. It was one of the best shows I have seen at the venue.

    John 5 NYC Invasion

by Tony Van Halen on 2/16/24Mickey's Black Box - Lititz

John 5 ripped it up at the Gramercy Theater in NYC on the latest stop of his 2024 solo run around the country. His fiery technique and overall mastery of the instrument will command your attention as he plays metal, rock, and some of the best country pickin to songs we all grew up listening to on his custom Telecasters. Featuring his two newest songs “Strung Out” and “Ghost” as well as favorites from his entire catalog and a “Motley Medley” made up of the best riffs/solos from the songs he’s been playing from his new full time gig as lead guitarist for Motley Crue. There is no one better out there who can shred and entertain like John 5 and The Creatures. Don’t miss this show if it comes to your town!

by Bubba on 2/16/24Mickey's Black Box - Lititz

Nothing to complain about the John 5 at all. John 5 put on a great shoe. The opening act Sticks and Stones was not bad. Mickeys Black Box is a nice venue for a show. I drove 45 minutes to get there and it was easy to find..seats were great..the setup was perfect..bathrooms..bars..etc.. I hope they get more acts I like. Loved it!!!!

    Great venue! Impressive Guitar virtuoso!!!

by SuitableEnd on 2/16/24Mickey's Black Box - Lititz

John 5 played a show at Mickey's Black Box in Lititz, PA. The venue was the perfect size to get up close and personal with one of the best guitar players I've had the pleasure of seeing live. John 5 can play any style of music and he bounced around all throughout the set including country, bluegrass, chicken pickin', metal, and even some jazz with an improvisation of Georgia On My Mind. It was just John 5 and a drummer and you really got to experience what a talent he is without being drawn away by other band members. Certainly a worthwhile experience if you like impressive guitar gods.

    Rockstar 🎸🎸🎸🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

by Coco on 1/30/24The Observatory - Santa Ana

John 5 is my favorite 🎸 player ever❣️ he’s super technical yet makes it seem effortless. His performances will leave you on cloud ☁️ 9. John 5 in person at meet in greets or NAMM has always been so humble and genuine it really kind of blows my mind 🧠 that I even got to meet him and take a photograph with him or have him sign his autograph for me. He makes you feel as special as he is. I love 💗 his solo work just as much as I love the bands he’s performed in from Manson to Zombie 🧟 and now Mötley Crüe 🤘🏻🎸 John 5 is our guitar 🎸 Virtuoso of our era. I’m so honored to see him on the stage he’s incredible and a real 💯 Rockstar 💫🌟⭐️✨🤩☄️ ❤️

    Legendary 🤩

by Sara on 1/29/24The Observatory - Santa Ana

Typically, I wouldn’t be invested in a show consisting of mostly instrumental music. John 5, however, held my attention and then some throughout the whole night. You wouldn’t believe the music is being played live right in front of you as it sounded as flawless as a studio recording! Everyone should see this man play at least once in their lifetime!

A great evening with John 5

by EB in Ca on 1/29/24The Observatory - Santa Ana

The Observatory is a great place to see shows; good sightlines, very easy access, good bar service, etc. For the January 27,2024 show, John 5’s first post Motley Crue tour, The Atomic Punks opened. These guys are a very good tribute to the original Van Halen. Songs you all know make them a fun watch. Jared James Nichols was up next. Hard-rockin’. Les Paul finger pickin’ tunes! My first time hearing Nichols, he is a fantastic opener for a guitar master! John 5 played this show without Ian Ross, so the bass lines were tracked. I hope he joins the tour, Ian is awesome. Alex Mercado on the drums was killing it (even when improvising beats with John) as usual! Even “Richard Ramirez”, John’s guitar tech, jumped in on bass for a medley set of Motley Crue riffs. Classic! John was really on and was hyped to be back with Creatures fans. Right away you could tell he likes playing smaller venues and interacting with the crowd up close. After mega shows over the last 15 years with Manson, Zombie and Crue, when in a sensible-sized venue he proves that he really is one of the good guys. Whether 16 or 65, you have to experience a small venue John 5 and the Creatures show. You won’t regret it.

    The Freezing Observatory

by Jake on 1/29/24The Observatory - Santa Ana

Great show but the Observatory in Santa Ana, one of my favorite venues, for some reason felt it necessary to crank the air conditioner even though it was already 50° outside. It was freezing. 😨🥶
