    Master of his Game!

    by hermosalisa14 on 10/2/12Birchmere - Alexandria

Second time seeing Mr. Sample. Gotta make the time to do it-- one of the great Jazz pianists of all time. Played from his roots-- Blues, Jazz and even some ragtime sounding riffs outta Texas and New Orleans! I feel blessed to have been able to see a great Jazz legend.

My husband and I loved this performance. We always enjoys hearing Mr. Sample play and also give insight to his music.

    Jazz Concert was entertaining

by 504DJCalice on 6/7/11Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Although the sound quality was not the best in the beginning, it turned out to be a very good concert.

    Joe Sample

The sound system for this event could have been better. But other than that, Joe put on a good performance.

    Changeovers Were Toooo Long

by kulchud on 6/2/11Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Great show. Performances were awesome!...but the changeovers were waaaay too long. How about setting up all of the backline at once and editing as the show progresses. 20 minutes between performances is unacceptable. Maybe adding stage decor would enhance the look and feel too.

    A reunion to remember

by Anonymous on 6/2/11Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Joe Sample and the Crusaders were incredible, However the sound system for the Mahalia Jackson theatre was less than fitting for such legends. The micrphones did not work at all for the opening act, A great local songtress. slightly improved for The great Roy Ayers. Became a little better for the incredible Joe Sample and the Jazz Crusaders quality of sound not fitting for these legends. I will think twice about any future events at this venue.

    Excellent!

by jenna4j on 6/1/11Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New Orleans

Excellent concert...worth the money! Started with amateur performance for about 45 minutes. Break and then Roy Ayers performed for about an hour. Another break and then Joe Sample performed for about an hour.

JOE SAMPLE AND THE JAZZ CRUSADERS

by Anonymous on 6/1/11Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New Orleans

FIRE THE SOUND COMPANY AND THE SOUND MAN ! ! THERE WERE 2 OPENING ACTS PRIOR TO JOE SAMPLE COMING ON STAGE AND NO SOUND COMING OUT OF THE FRONT SPEAKERS FOR EITHER - ONLY THE STAGE MONITORS WERE TURNED ON - I GOT UP FROM MY SEAT AND COMPLAINED TO THE SOUND MAN WHO GAVE ME THE EXCUSE THAT THE SOUND COMPANY DID NOT PROVIDE ANY FLOOR SPEAKERS FOR THOSE OF US WHO PAID BIG BUCKS TO SIT IN THE LOWER LEVEL- IT WAS ONLY AFTER THE 2ND ACT, AND SEVERAL MORE COMPLAINTS, THAT SUCH SPEAKERS WERE BROUGHT OUT AND PLACED ACROSS THE STAGE - THEN JOE SAMPLE CAME OUT AND PLAYED - THE GROUP WAS FABULOUS BUT, ONCE AGAIN, THE SOUND MAN DID NOT TURN UP THE VOLUME ON HIS PIANO ENOUGH TO BE HEARD ON HIS SOLO(S), - THE MIX WAS NOT GOOD AT ALL THE WHOLE NIGHT. ALSO, THE SHOW WAS WAY TOO LONG - FOR A 7PM START TIME, HE DID NOT COME ON UNTIL AROUND 9:30 DUE TO THE OPENING ACTS, SOUND ADJUSTMENTS AND EQUIPMENT CHANGES BETWEEN ACTS - - SEVERAL PEOPLE LEFT THE ARENA BEFORE THE SHOW FINISHED BECAUSE OF THIS. I HAD JUST BEEN TO THIS VENUE A WEEK EARLIER TO SEE JACKSON BROWNE, WHO WAS GREAT - THE SOUND SYSTEM WORKED FINE THEN. BUT, AFTER SPENDING SO MUCH MONEY TO PURCHASE SIX TICKETS AND INVITING FRIENDS TO WHOM I BRAGGED SO MUCH TO ABOUT THE THEATER, IT WAS A VERY DISAPPOINTING EVENING.

    Average

I think this whole event could have been done a lot better. For starters, the show was supposed to begin at 7 PM and they only opened the doors for us to enter the auditorium 15 minutes prior to the show. Second, there were two opening bands that we didn't know about which delayed the 'actual' show for over 3 hours!! During the second performer's act, the event host ran out into the middle of the set and cut them off. I couldn't believe how rude! I mean, we, the audience, had already been sitting there for 3 hours...the least they could have done is let them band finish that song. Also, the sound was incredibly poor. The two opening bands had difficulties with the audience hearing them. We were later told there was no sound test conducted prior to the show. I used to do A/V and technical directing. How was this crucial step skipped?? The only thing that saved this event was Joe and the Crusaders but even then, the sound was still poorly projected, they only did a handful of songs and the event was over at midnight....on a Sunday. I just think the whole affair could have been setup better. We have a hard enough time as it is attracting great 'jazz' acts to New Orleans. After experiencing this show, I can understand why some don't come here often.

    Sample was inspiring

by Tacotom on 1/29/10Bears Den At Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel - Niagara Falls

First time I saw a show in the Bears Den. It was a nice intimate "unplugged" kind of feel. The band sounded great and the acoustics were outstanding. I didn't catch the drummers name but the bassist was Joe Sample's son Vince Sample. This is the third time I've seen Joe Sample. Something he did this time that he didn't do in previous shows was he took some time between songs to talk about American history, the history of music and some great stories about himself. His accounts were every bit as entertaining as the music. Although Joe Sample is known primarily as a Jazz artist he played several songs that were in more of a blues vein. Being a blues musician myself...I thoroughly enjoyed those songs and wish he would have played more of them. It was a great show and everybody there enjoyed the show too.
