JOANNA NEWSOM IN CONCERT:

Over the past decade indie folk icon Joanna Newsom has parlayed her idiosyncratic sound into Top 40 success, an impressive feat for a classically trained harpist whose unique compositions incorporate everything from Appalachian music to avant-garde modernism. Newsom’s songwriting is at once accessible and stunningly complex, taking familiar sounds and structures and turning them on their heads to reveal delightful new dimensions. She’s a master harpist and a skilled multi-instrumentalist, and her live shows are virtuosic recreations of her painstakingly crafted songs that treat ticket buyers to an up-close-and-personal look at her compositional process. As she plucks out elaborate passages on the harp with breathtaking dexterity, Newsom casts her acrobatic voice over fans, enveloping them in a brilliant and charming world of poetic lyrics and emotional melodies. An acclaimed performer revered for her originality and unparalleled musicianship, Newsom is a must-see performer for fans of classical, folk, and pop alike.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

California-born Joanna Newsom’s parents shielded her from TV and radio as a child, but she was exposed to music from a young age nonetheless –her father played guitar and her mother was a classically trained pianist. Newsom took up piano at age 5 and began playing harp shortly after, receiving her first full-size pedal harp in seventh grade. After high school she studied composition at Mills College before dropping out to focus on music full time, and in the early ‘00s she released two EPs of her early work, 2002’s Walnut Whales and 2003’s Yam and Glue. The releases caught the ear of alt folk star Will Oldham (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy), who promptly invited Newsom on tour and passed her music on to his label Drag City. She signed with the label and released her 2004 debut album The Milk-Eyed Mender, an acclaimed collection that led to tours with Devendra Banhart and Vetiver. Her ambitious 2006 sophomore album Ys was an even bigger critical success, charting on both sides of the Atlantic and landing on numerous year-end lists thanks to its imaginative songwriting and unique arrangements. Since then she’s continued to impress with her masterful performances on tour and her beloved recordings, which include 2010’s rave-reviewed LP Have One on Me and her fourth album Divers, which cracked the mainstream Top 40 in both the US and the UK in 2015.

    What is there to say?

    by BLANK8 on 12/10/15Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

Kings Theatre is incredible, and to see Joanna play there was simply magical. It was a night I am not likely to forget. She played tons of her old songs, but all of her new songs fit into her set wonderfully. Joanna is probably the greatest song writer of our generation, and her style is truly unique. See her any chance you get.

    PERFECTION

Joanna Newsom and her band are perfection. That is all. The Orpheum Theater is smelly and squished, but you have to love it. Because...history?

    My Christmas Present

by Firstie on 12/29/10The National - Richmond

What an awesome show! I love Joanna Newsom and had never seen her live before. It was 100 times better than I even thought it would be. She took my breath away. Thanks for having her at The National! It was my Christmas present ... well, my 2010 present actually! I'll certainly never forget it.

    Joanna's Juice

by BigGiantLiz on 11/29/10The Ritz Ybor - Tampa

Drink it. Easily the most beautiful thing I've ever witnessed in real life. I kind of cried the entire time. If you have the opportunity to see this woman play her harp and sing her songs, take it. I would drive hours and hours, many many miles to see her again.

    AMAZING

by Jacksteroniiii on 11/22/10The National - Richmond

The crowd was so in awe that not only one song was played for the encore, but two. The night started out with an old favorite of many, Bridges and Balloons, and the crowd went wild, of course until the ball got rolling, and glances all around showed goosebumps and tears from the beauty of the music....Serenity

    The Best? Maybe.

by zvporter on 11/22/10The National - Richmond

Starting out with her drummer, Neal Morgan, opening up with his own material, the mood was set by his expressive vocals, haunting arrangements, his boom box playing the background vocals, and his notebook of lyrics or song order or whatever that mysterious folder contained. But then, out came Joanna herself, as bright and chipper as ever, sporting a summer dress and a summer smile. Her set list was expansive, ranging from her first album, but focusing on her newest, and as always, her vocals were spot on and her instrumentation sure. Her backing band was as incredible as she, with a trombone often playing the role of bass instrument (alongside the harp), and beautiful adornments by mandolin, or electric guitar, or whatever instrument he could pull out of his sleeve by Ryan Francesconi, who also made the arrangements for the entire Have One on Me album, as well as the arrangements for the older songs which the band performed. As far as musical integrity goes, performance was spot on. Not a single note or beat was missed by any of the six performing musicians on the stage, and every musician was in sync with the others, resulting in perfect crescendos and gorgeous instrumental passages. If singer/songwriter doesn't float your boat, it should. Joanna Newsom is the ultimate of the genre, adorning her elegant song structures with pages of flowing, image inducing, heart pounding, take-you-to-soaring-highs-and-reverberating-lows lyrics. Her seemingly endless supply of inventive words and phrases is incredible on its own, without the indelibly tied melodies and harmonies.

From the moment she came out on the stage with that cute sweet smile on her face to the end of the evening, Joanna Newsom held us all in a trance. I liked the songs from her new 3 CD set the best, - her clever lyrics and rhythms. Making me altnerately wince, and smile.

    Awesome Newsom

    by L8leigh on 11/22/10The National - Richmond

I eagerly anticipated this concert as I am a huge fan of Joanna Newsom's music, and I can honestly say I was not disappointed. The ninety-minute-or-so program could have gone on all night and I still would have wanted to hear more. While my husband slept through some of the concert ("not his cup of tea"), I was riveted to the performance for its entirety. The band was composed of Newsom on harp and piano, two violinists, a brass player, a string player (guitar and banjo and a couple of other instruments), and a percussionist. Percussion was used sparingly and mostly effectively, as was the guitar. Songs often lasted several minutes but never wore out their welcome. Perhaps because the songs are often lengthy, there wasn't much time given to chat between the musicians onstage, but that only helped put the focus squarely on the wonderful music, which is a unique mix of folk, classical, and pop sounds highlighted by Newsom's unusual high-pitched, slightly nasal voice and enchanting harp playing. Her unique sound is an acquired taste, but that is exactly what makes it so delightful to these ears.

    Excellent performance by Joanna

by theadge on 11/22/10The National - Richmond

Joanna Newsom continues to tour her third album, the triple-LP/CD powerhouse, "Have One On Me," and appears unwavering in her enthusiasm and energy. While the set focused on the album, released earlier this year, Newsom made sure to play songs from her previous recordings. Tracks from her first album were arranged and played with her band in mind and the musicians melded with the music originally played solo. Newsom performed perhaps flawlessly as did her band. She appeared in great spirits — lively but not overly chatty (often a sign of feeling nervous) and full of smiles. The crowd for the seated show followed the request on the door of the venue and remained "quiet" during the performances and reserved their cheers to between songs. Venue staff also were friendly though their unwritten, unpublicized policy on cameras — no "professional gear," meaning nothing with detachable lenses — seemed vague and unrealistic. Some "point-and-shoot" cameras take excellent pictures. The no-flash photography policy was not enforced as flashes went off throughout the show and security did not appear to take any action to either confiscate the cameras or at least tell the people to stop. All in all the show was very enjoyable.

    Hauntingly beautiful

by Anonymous on 11/18/10The Ritz Ybor - Tampa

Joanna Newsom was amazing. When do you get to see a band that consists of harp, banjo, 2 violins, trombone and percussionist? Her vocals were amazing, sounded just like the record and even better at some moments. The band was very tight and you could tell that they have rehearsed this music some time. The audience was great too. Many Newsom songs have this intense softness to them, which the audience made every attempt not to disturb. Her stage presence was awesome, very funny and comfortable on stage. I will see her again without a doubt.
