Too contemporary jazz for me but best performers in that area in the world.
Dazzling musicality. Jazz, swing, bop, New Orleans, New York. Simply the best concert I've attended this year, possibly the best--at worst #2--in the last five. The Marsalis family dazzled in the first half and the JALC Orchestra, with help from the Family--kept the level stratospheric and broadened it out to a beautiful review of classics from the 50's--songs by Horace Silver and Lee Donaldson. The finale was a good old-fashioned New Orleans romp. Family was magnificent, but I'd be remiss by not mentioning the contributions of JALCO stalwarts Victor Goines, Sherman Irby, Marcus Princup, Ted Nash, Dan Nimmer, Carlos Enrique, the incredible Ali Jackson...and on and on. Ellis' playing and songwriting were a revelation--gotta go find a recording of "After." Jason's vibe-playing was astonishing. Gotta stop, but everything, absolutely everything was wonderful
The Marsalis Family is by far the first family of Jazz in America today. Ellis at age 80 was incredible. Wynton, Brandon, Delfayo and Jason were all virtuosi in their own right. Each musician, both in the Family and in the Orchestra, was incredible, and this was truly an example of ensemble playing par excellence! It was also incredible to see players move in and out during a song. My wife and I are both semi-professional musicians, and we were absolutely amazed with the talent assembled on stage.
It was awesome. ....I didn't want to leave. ...COME BACK SOON
What a great illustration of the importance of jazz! The interplay among the musicians was exceptional. The interpretations were rich and colorful. The energy and emotion were very high all evening. Fantastic! The value of being a family and an extended family of musicians was on display. Wynton was so very good with historical context and some humor which brought the audience along for the journey. Don't miss any opportunity to see them!
That was Quite a show! We were familiar with Wynton and Branford but didn't know their father was an incredible pianist and writer. In addition, brothers Jason and Delfeayo are talented as well. The performance was not only excellent but was also quite educational on Jazz history and influences of many famous Jazz musicians. Amazing!
The concert on March 29th at Clowes Hall was a highlight of my 70+ years of music listening pleasure. This may have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience - to see the Marsalis's playing together along with the exceptional Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra was truly phenomenal. I would have liked to have heard one more number from the Marsalis family before the break, but what they did was amazing. We took our son and grandson to this event because you don't get opportunities like this very often. They both enjoyed it very much and recognized this for what it was - a rare collaberation of musical talent and history in one unforgettable night.
To have one or two children that are so talented is awesome - but to have 4 equally talented sons following in their famous father's footsteps and to know that he sat in with some of the greats of jazz music must be an incredible accomplishment. I will think of this nite everytime I hear the theme from CBS' Sunday Morning with my coffee!
What a tremendous experience. To any music educator if you get the chance expose your students to this group. Beside the incredible talent assembled on stage the jazz history lesson given by Wynton Marsalis was worth the price of admission. One of the best evenings of music I have ever seen.
What a great show! Wynton and his orchestra amazed a captive audience with the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie/ Kansas City music. True to his love for music, Wynton once again provided a delightful concert ; no one was disappointed with the awesome music these fine gentlemen were creating under the direction of their leader. Bravo!
This performance more than met our expectations and satisfied our joy of hearing these amazing musicians. The precision and difficulty of many of the pieces made the outstanding skill of each musician stand out. The entire ensemble was extremely talented and together made this experience one of a kind.
Great performance by some of the very best musicians in the world.
I saw Wynton Marsalis in the early 2000's: it was fantastic. I wainted years to catch him again. This was entirely different: The second set was sleepier than the first: the whole show was sleepy. There was no innovation, the entire show was historically retrospective, and he sat down the entire time: even for the encore! These folks didn't have any pizazz and certainly did not play jazz in terms of being engaged with the music. It was a complete waste of time and money. If not for having a date, I would have walked out.
The music was amazing, but the overall performance lacked lightness that I thought this music should have and the way it was probably originally performed by the duke and count. While it got my toes tapping, it was a little bit too much like a lecture in parts, although I do appreciate learning the history behind the music. Just wanted the orchestra to lighten up a little, and make us feel the soul of it more.
LOVE IT! From the beginning to end. He is just a great entertainer and shares the spotlight with his band members. When my husband was still in college he discovered Wynton Marsalis and he is still a big fan. I bought the tickets as a birthday gift for my husband and also brought my two daughters 11 and 14 yrs old and they enjoyed very much too. The several standing ovation said it all.
The group has such a sweet yet powerful sound - my husband and I loved every minute!
I am not a jazz buff by any means, but when I have the chance to hear the best, I go listen. This was an unforgettable performance in a great venue. I've seen Wynton and JLCO three years in a row - at the Disney downtown, a theater in Santa Barbara, and the Valley Performing Arts Center. This last time is definitely the best overall experience. Great seats, great sound, easy to park (and inexpensive). To see and hear the best of the best was a joy. The sound/acoustics at the VPAC is every bit as good as it is at Disney. I look forward to going to more events here now that I am familiar with the venue. One of the best values in all of Los Angeles.
How smart was I to order six seats for this EVENT! I say event, because when these 17 (15 +guests) musicians (true masters of their craft, each a composer, an artist, a master at their chosen devices) and their support crew arrive at a venue as fine as the Valley Performing Arts Center... something extraordinary is bound to occur. Occur it did, INTENSE demand for my extra seats, INCREDIBLE energy from the first beat, SUPERB interpretation of both the 'new' and the 'old testament' of swing... CATCALLS OF HONOR from the audience to specific favorite members of the orchestra... Wynton Marsalis, music director, trumpet Ryan Kisor, trumpet Marcus Printup, trumpet Kenny Rampton, trumpet Vincent Gardner, trombone Chris Crenshaw, trombone Elliot Mason, trombone Sherman Irby, alto saxophone Ted Nash, alto & soprano saxophones, clarinet Walter Blanding, Jr., tenor & soprano saxophones, clarinet Victor Goines, tenor & soprano saxophones, Bb clarinet, bass clarinet Joe Temperley, baritone & soprano saxophones, bass clarinet Dan Nimmer, piano Carlos Henriquez, bass Ali Jackson, drums 15 individuals performing at times as one, at times as collaborators, ALWAYS appreciating the mad skills and mastery of their fellow journeymen, with a smile, a nod, a turn and look of surprised disbelief (did I REALLY just hear that!) They are not only the performers of the evening, they are a part of the audience, and they enjoy the show as much or more than anyone. As Wynton says, I am very fortunate to have the best seat in the house tonight. Right yo are Mr. Marsalis... keep the swing alive! ~zzz
Wynton Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center crew always swing. Nice mix of classic Ellington, Basie and newer material, executed with feeling and unsurpassed technical facility.
