JANE’S ADDICTION IN CONCERT:

Alternative rock pioneers Jane’s Addiction have awed fans with superior musicianship and over-the-top showmanship for more than three decades, and they’re still going strong. The band's potent blend of alt-rock, metal, and punk is pure sonic boom and their live shows are equally explosive, flooring fans with full-throttle funk metal shredding and far-out visual spectacles. Flamboyant frontman and Lollapalooza founder Perry Ferrell commands the stage with cocksure rock star swagger, pumping up the crowd with wild-eyed intensity until they reach a blissed-out state of rock nirvana. Superstar guitarist Dave Navarro is equally magnetic, shaking fans to the core with his high-octane riffage on scorching favorites like “Stop”, “Been Caught Stealing”, and “Mountain Song”. Jane's Addiction are alt-rock legends for a reason, and their fun and freaky live performances are a can't-miss experience for any alt-rock fan worth their salt.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Singer Perry Ferrell formed Jane’s Addiction with original bassist Eric Avery in 1985, eventually teaming up with guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins. The group exploded on LA’s underground rock scene, attracting the attention of Warner Bros. Records, who commissioned the group’s 1987 self-titled debut. The following year they released their sophomore album Nothing’s Shocking, which they supported as an opening act on tour with Iggy Pop and The Ramones. With the 1990 release of Ritual de lo Habitual the band became a household name, as singles “Stop” and “Been Caught Stealing” raced up the alternative charts. Despite their breakthrough success, the group imploded in the early '90s over heavy drug use, as half the band tried to get clean while the other half partied on. After the break up Ferrell found success in the mid-'90s with his new band Porno for Pyros while Navarro became one of the most in-demand guitarists of the decade, playing with everyone from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nine Inch Nails to Janet Jackson and Alanis Morissette. Things remained icy between the two until they buried the hatchet in the early '00s, thrilling fans with a string of Jane's Addiction shows and the 2003 album Strays. The band has been back full-time since 2008, continuing to rock legions of fans with their pioneering funk metal sound and live-wire performances.

    I can't believe NIN didn't play closer!

by Athena01 on 7/14/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

I saw NIN at Virgin fest last summer & they were awesome! That's why I went to the Merrieweather show. I was disappointed this time around. However, Jane's Addiction was incredible! I had never seen them before, but would definitely like to see them again!

    One or the Other

by Bepharmer on 7/14/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

So it seemed to me that the combination of the two bands left a bizarre crowd. Half were there to see one band, half to see the other. The music however was awesome. Trent Reznor is so intense, and Perry Farrell such an entertainer.

    real rock n roll

by sherpa on 7/14/09Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

This is what hard rock is supposed to be. Nobody does it better. Perry was in prime form, Avery and Perkins were foundation-shaking and precise, and Navarro handled the orchestration with stunning deftness. Pulling off anthemic gems like Three Days and Then She Did live on stage is a testament to these guys' ability and dedication. Easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. Even singles like Jane Says and Been Caught Stealing took on whole new dimensions with Avery and Perkins keeping things slow, heavier than heavy, and hitting every downbeat with special intent. Most band play everything too fast.

    Jane's Addiction was dancerific!!

by lisarenee34 on 7/14/09Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

I was shocked at how the band came together for a solid muscially sound performance! It was as if they didn't miss a beat! It was a show that made you want to dance from beginning to end - and dance I did!!! The arrangement of "Jane's Says" was surprising - a funky version of the steel drums - just as eclectic as the band. I loved the opener of "Three days." I would recommend the show to friends!!

Jane's Addiction - not so addicting.

by Debalicious on 7/14/09Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

For the price my friends - I thought the show was anemic. Up front I could barely here Perry's voice over the instrumentals. Someone threw up on my feet (flip flops). Nice. I thought for the amount of money that was charged for these tickets there should have been a much longer, more passionate venue. Just felt kind of mechanical. (sigh) But.....the people-watching was phenomenal! Vast range of ages, hippies, beautiful people, not-so-beautiful people, soccer moms, kids, wastoids - you name it. And an old flame to boot. It was fantastic!!!

    Now Addicted to JA

by Thomas00 on 7/13/09Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

I recently attended the Jane's Addiction concert in Columbus. This band's reunion is the real deal. Heavy alt rock delivered by a fantastic rhythm section, competent guitar and over the top outta sight vocals. The drummer and bass player knocked my sox off; these guys are great and know each other's moves. Dave Navarro's guitar--often sort of Edge-like--was great as main band melodic instrument, but his solos were not awe-inspiring. Perry Farrell's singing, however, was the real deal and his voice often served as another instrument--not just a word vehicle. Mr. Farrell's dancing, vogueing, talking with the audience and spritely moves around the stage were immensely entertaining. Very cute in his gold jump suit with wide silver belt, he was often spinning around like a puppet on strings. Difficult to fully describe, Farrell's moves add plenty to the enjoyment of this act. I consider Perry Farrell to be one of the top 5 or 10 front men I have witnessed in 40 years of concert-going. The band delivered all the hits from its 90's heyday. Most of the audience knew the words better than me. The only low note of the concert was JA's performance of "Been Caught Stealing", which the band appeared to mail in. I swear that Dave Navarro appeared to play the first verse of the song in the wrong key--maybe on purpose, dunno; I caught him and Perry exchanging a look. But even after Navarro got on track, the band just appeared to rush through it, making it a muddled mess. I guess every successful band has a popular song they've played a million times that they just can't stand any more. Like usual on this tour, they closed with "Jane Sez". This song allowed the band to change the pace, come out to the front of the stage together and bring a warmer bent to their music. Everyone sang along as rain drops began to fall. The concert ended on this jubilant but melancholy, wet note. If you are a true fan or even just a casual fan of JA, you need to catch them in concert on this tour.

    AMAZING SHOW!

by JANESROCKSOHIO on 7/13/09Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

The band was tight, the set list was amazing, and the crowd was a blast! Got tickets the day of the show and wound up in the front row, well worth the three hour drive!

    short but sweet

by MilvaRose76 on 7/13/09Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

The band was energetic, entertaining, and seemed to be having a ball while playing GREAT. The problem? They only played for about 55 minutes!! And that's after waiting in the venue for them to start for over 3 hours. My friends and I were overall glad we went just to get out on a Friday night, but considering the prices we paid when all was said and done we felt a bit shorted w/the lack of play time. When the curtains went down, we kind of stood around waiting for them to come back on - figuring Perry was just doing a costume change. But then the staff at the pavilion started telling us to move out, the show was over...??? I hope the fans who saw them with NIN got a little more out of those shows than we did. I still love Jane's, but I don't know if I'd pay to see them again.

    Amazing show

by tapatia on 7/13/09Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

I have been waiting for years to see Jane's Addiction, so when I heard they were touring, I knew I would be going to see them, even if Columbus, Ohio was a four-hour drive for me. Let me tell you, the show made the drive soooo worth it. The band was tight, the energy was intense, and Perry was in top form. It was obvious that the whole group was into their performance and not just "going through the motions," as is sometimes the case with reunion tours. I was really pleasantly surprised by - and very pleased with - this venue. It was much smaller than I would have imagined, which gave the show a very intimate feel and made for some great energy between the audience and the band. Not a bad seat in the house, so to speak - it was great! I would never hesitate to make this drive again for a show that I really wanted to see. I think smaller venues always make for a better concert experience!
