About

JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW IN CONCERT:

Genre-bending Irish musician James Vincent McMorrow is a master of stirring up emotion, combining haunting vocals and beautifully sparse arrangements to stunning effect on his swelling compositions. While his 2010 debut fit relatively comfortably in the realm of indie folk, 2014's Post Tropical is another story, combining elements of R&B, hip hop, and electronica on subtly layered productions that evade genre categorization. And then there's that voice — a falsetto that's certainly broken a few hearts, as flooring in live concert as it is on record. Already a revered live performer in Europe, Morrow has North American audiences eagerly awaiting his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ireland's James Vincent McMorrow picked up the guitar at 19, developing an idiosyncratic singing and songwriting style that he claims owes much to female artists of the '70s due to the lofty pitch of his voice. After cutting his teeth performing in local pubs, McMorrow isolated himself in a coastal cabin to record his debut, 2010's Early in the Morning. The album was a hit, garnering positive reviews, a No. 1 chart position, and platinum certification from the RIAA. In 2011, McMorrow's cover of Steve Winwood's '80s gem "Higher Love" brought him even more attention, getting picked up for a popular British ad campaign. With the 2014 release of sophomore album Post Tropical, McMorrow unveiled a new stylistic direction, once again climbing the charts and embarking on an international tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"JVM is a legend in the making. The music blankets his melancholy lyrical genius. It is truly timeless. If you haven't seen him, do it now while he is emerging ... or regret it later."

"He and the group were so ON. They were even better in person that we could have imagined. James' voice is superb and the band was so in sync."

"I've never posted a review before, but James Vincent McMorrow deserves far more praise than the world has given him thus far. In a word: INCREDIBLE. What an absolutely mind-blowing voice he has."

    No frills, great show

by crustymcbusty on 4/7/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Keeps it moving right along, sounds just as good if not better live than studio versions, down to earth. Opener Aidan Knight was good but maybe a little too similar an act to JVM.

A fantastic show. James' voice is even more incredible live than it is on a cd, and the tiny venue created a very intimate space. The only complaint I had was the drunk people at the bar who kept shouting things out in the middle of songs and being a little rude, but that's probably unavoidable. All in all, the man is adorable and an incredible performer.

without a doubt one of the best shows i've seen in years. the album, early in the morning, does him (and the band) no justice. james' voice is reminiscent of - and at its best goes beyond - jeff buckley and ray lamontagne. truly amazing. for anyone into singer/songwriters, james vincent mcmorrow's live shows are a MUST.

    James Vincent McMorrow -

by MGNYC on 6/12/11Mercury Lounge - New York

I've never posted a review before, but James Vincent McMorrow deserves far more praise than the world has given him thus far. In a word: INCREDIBLE. What an absolutely mind-blowing voice he has. The gig was opened by Lady Lamb the Beekeeper who started her set with a stunningly beautiful acapella song, and swiftly transitioned into intensely guitar-driven songs. Watching her, you wonder who it is she reminds you of, and it's hard to put your finger on it. Her voice has the perfect mixture of purity, grit, and intensity. Despite her young age, she looks as if she's been playing music to crowds all of her life; very self-assured and confident on stage. James Vincent McMorrow took the stage and was immediately met by the squeals of delighted fans. This is especially remarkable considering this was his first ever headline show in the US, and only his third show in New York City (the other two taking place just days before opening for Bell X1 at Bowery Ballroom). The Dublin native delighted the crowd with witty banter between songs, mostly in regards to America's inferno-like summer temperatures. The stage was subtly lit by soft red lights, giving a very intimate feel to the evening. The stand out song for me was "Down The Burning Ropes" (track 8 from his debut album, 'Early In The Morning') His voice is one of the most unique and beautifully pure voices in modern music. I think it's safe to say that all who were in attendance at this one-off headline show will not soon forget it. James Vincent McMorrow has an incredibly bright future ahead of him and I believe one day I will look back on this night and sigh, thinking, "I remember seeing him play before he was famous".

    JVM was simply amazing

by thorek on 6/12/11Mercury Lounge - New York

James Vincent McMorrow put on an amazing performance. Aside from his amazing voice, haunting melodic constructions and wonderful guitar work, he displayed sharp wit and humor when talking to the crowd between songs. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see him in an intimate setting before he gets super big and less accessible.
