JAMES GETS ‘LAID’ IN AUSTRALIA FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME

“This bed is on fire with passionate love, The neighbours complain about the noises above, But she only comes when she’s on top….”

These memorable lines from James’ 1993 hit ‘Laid’ defined a decade becoming the soundtrack to early 90s alternative radio and then finding a second life through its use in teen hit American Pie. Now the band are heading to Australia for the very first time in their career to celebrate the release of their fourteenth album ‘Girl at the End of the World’, presented by MJR.

JAMES had already had a decade of hits by the time Laid arrived, having risen from Manchester’s legendary Factory Records scene into one of the biggest UK bands in the world by the dawn of the 90s. With alternative hits in Australia including Laid, Sit Down, Sound, Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), She’s a Star and Just Like Fred Astaire, the band were triple j staples for over fifteen years, yet never ventured downunder.... Until now.

James are visiting Australia this November for four special shows. After internal struggles kicked off a long hiatus in 2001, the band reconciled in 2007 and continued their prosperous career, getting back on the live trail. Their new album ‘Girl at the End of the World’ has become their most popular in over a decade, debuting at #2 in the UK charts (only behind Adele!). The accompanying live shows just finished across the UK have been the bands broadest ever tour, receiving rave reviews - “It’s not hard to grasp the enduring appeal of James… With a hit album, a sellout tour and no sign of the tunes running out, James are, without a doubt, the indie rock dream made flesh” The Observer.

‘Girl at The End of the World’ sees the band team with producer Max Dingel (The Killers, Muse, White Lies) with the legendary Brian Eno infusing his unique influence into the blend. The new album is both anthemic and euphoric, with its simmering electronica continuing James’ long connection to the dance floor. The band’s trademark songwriting and Tim Booth’s distinctive vocal & evocative lyrics prove once again to be amongst Britain’s finest.

“Bands talk about that difficult second album but it’s the trickster 14th one that’s the real M*&^%R F&%$#R,” says Tim Booth of the making of the new record. "As always with James it’s a collaborative process allowing ample room for improvisation, intuition, skill and dumb luck. From the outside our process looks like chaos but chaos is our friend and we have a history that gives us confidence that something magical will eventually appear. We've been trying to come down under for many years - something never quite fell right . Really looking forward to meeting new friends and making up for lost time."

  • James is simply the best show in the world

(what I posted on the James's website forum, entitled Atlanta setlist) I second all comments relating to the Atlanta show. Each member of the band is a true professional and they look like they have a real good time playing together-lots of smiles. Bought their new album last week (have them all), and I believe it's their best work yet. They opened with Dust Motes, one of my favorite off the new CD; the song and Booth's range were flawlessly performed. Two songs I'd love to see done live are Dr Hellier and Heroes. If I had a choice of going to a U2., Coldplay, or James concert, I would choose the latter-with the VIP pass. How are they so unknown in America?

That was the most amazing show I have ever seen! If I had the funds I would have gone to PA tonight.

Better than I could have imagined! Great songs, great dancing, great crowd participation - overall a really fun night! I honestly wanted to drive up to Orlando to see them, fly to Atlanta, DC and MA - would go almost anywhere if the timing was right - I just wish they had more US dates!

  • James Rocked

I waited a long time to get to see James for the first time. Tim Booth and the gang played their hearts out. I thought the fiddle would catch fire during the incredible solo it was being played with such intensity. It is amazing that Tim can scream in one song then his voice is magically back to perfect condition for a following mellow song. The drum and guitar musicianship is incredible. Kind of a small crowd that showed up but that made it more enjoyable for us die-hard James fans. It was more intimate and there was room to walk around. Awesome show.

It was great. I waited too long for this moment. I enjoyed to the fullest. I hope to have another chance to see them and if it is in England so much better.

  • The return of James

    by kpd1 on 9/22/10Culture Room - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

I was so glad to finally see James live and they delivered a great performance. A good mix of new and old material although I would have liked some of their early songs from their first US album(but since those never hit in the US I understood their exclusion). Tim's energetic dancing and vocal abilities were a highlight. The band showed that their talent remains.

  • It was good.

James' show two nights ago was cool, but not unforgettable. My wife and I saw them last year the two dates planned for the tour in Boston's Paradise and it was unbelievable!!..... the energy, the crowd, the band was at its 200%...... the set list was superb. On monday night, I could feel Tim a little bit sad with the sound, the levels were quite weird so the drummer had to play most of the show with different sticks.... not regular drumsticks but a lighter version. In that sense, the show was a little bit not good, but you know, James is James....... Marvelous band!!!

I've always been a casual fan of James and I knew it was going to be a good show, but I had no idea what was in store for me. From the very beginning the band was solid and Tim's vocals were right on point. The dynamics of the music were executed with grace and skill and the band's oftentimes earnest lyrics rang true and didn't come off as neither contrived nor forced. The most impressive thing for me was how well they connected with people who had not really listened to them before. I took a few friends with me and they were so glad I did; they "got it" and that says a lot about the clarity of the songwriting and the skill of the players. Finally, the show left me with a feeling of elation that I'm still carrying with me two days later. I highly recommend you catch this tour; you never know when they will be back, if ever.

  • Amazing Show

What an awesome show. The venue was small holding only a 100+ yet they put on a performance that would of rocked a huge arena!

  • The boys are back with a vengence!

by Manc on 9/22/10Culture Room - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

James are one of the best live acts, and have been since their early days. There is not one negative thing to say about them. Since their reunion Tim Booths song writing has probably gotten even better, if not a little more maudlin at times. Even if you don't know the band you should attend their shows. You will not be disapointed.

culture room was a great small venue to see a big british band, i'll never get the chance to see a band of james stature at such a small venue again. 2 hours of great music, the band sounded awesome. can't wait for them to return again soon
