About

Influenced by the likes of D’Angelo and Stevie Wonder along with Burial and Mount Kimbie, James Blake is known for injecting some soul into the genre of dubstep. The London-based producer first gave the world a taste of his quirky, R&B-sampling strain of dubstep in 2009 when his Air & Lack Thereof 12” appeared on the Hemlock label. Blake received quite the endorsement when the heralded Soul Jazz label picked the track up for their Steppas' Delight 2 compilation that same year. In 2010 the R&S label released his CMYK EP while Hessle Audio issued his 12” single The Bells Sketch. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

Blake was good, and all was well.

by f00man on 9/26/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

If you've listened to the latest album you won't be disappointed by this show. I initially assumed because of Blake's electronica background that many of these tracks would be performed with just drum machines, laptops, and synths, but James comes equipped with some really talented musicians at his side including a drummer who really blew me away with his ability to reproduce rhythms on a minimalist electronic drum set which I could swear were being played by machine. Blake himself was a great performer live. His unique vibrato and soft touch on voice was as beautiful as I imagined it would be. He also unveiled a few new songs for us. The energy of the show is chill, and there was a feeling of good will in the air, fostered by melodic quiet-loud-quiet progressions, and quaint British politeness.

    James Blake killed it!

by Ryanville on 9/21/11The Music Box - Hollywood

James Blake did a phenomenal job performing live his electronic album with instrumentation (e.g., keyboard, guitar and drums). Really, really impressive performance.

    The Real

by Papicock on 9/21/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Mr. Blake satisfied all the elements needed that night except the one only my chick can really help me with (I was forced to say that). Anyway, amazing show, a mix of Pink Floyd, some dirty garage dub-step and little Aaron Neville voice mod action that lends itself to a warm tasty vibration. Get some, trust me.

    out of body music

by jaaaymeez on 9/21/11The Music Box - Hollywood

James Blake's show was unlike anything I've been to. Everyone there was experiencing something that is almost hard to put in words. The mix of his unique and beautiful voice with a super talented band and dope synthetic sounds were amazing. Not to mention the bass that literally vibrated through our bodies in the front rows. DEFINITELY a show you can't miss no matter what genre you prefer. I loved everrrry moment and would go again in a heartbeat. His passion and ease as he performs is just amazing.

    Best Show of My Life!!

by KimMJ on 9/20/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Honestly, I was skeptic as to how James Blake would sound live, but his performance absolutely blew my expectations! His voice is exactly as it sounds on mp3, and the sounds (base, guitar, piano) are so much more powerful live. He was amazing--and I would see him again in a heartbeat!

True Artistry in a pure form

by annieLA on 9/20/11The Music Box - Hollywood

James' talent is unquestionable. The show's simplicity was the key for me. Three musicians on stage each giving exactly what was required, contributing to a beautifully magical and innocent, yet still sexy collaboration. Not a minute too long or too short. And that drummer killed it! Fantastic show. First time for me at the music box. I'm inspired to return.

James Blake AMAZING, Teengirl Fantasy just alright

by stevensteven327 on 9/20/11The Music Box - Hollywood

Amazing amazing night. The opening act Teengirl Fantasy was alright; that had some good sounds and interesting beats, as well as fantastic basslines. Overall they were okay, but seemed to lack all the finishing touches to their sound, and seemed encumbered with too much equipment to produce a coherent set. James Blake was AMAZING though, which more than made up for that. I've seen him before at a music festival but the set here was much longer, and even featured two encore songs. I'm very grateful I attended this concert. :)

    James Blake - Breathtaking

by nouveauglass on 9/20/11The Music Box - Hollywood

There was so much hype and expectation leading up to this show... it was almost guaranteed to fall short of the overblown expectations I had for it. Instead, I was completely blown away by how great Blake and his band were. They were incredible, musically, friendly and fun... played every song I might have wished for and introduced a number of great new songs. ***** all the way

    Sound was all off

by person11 on 9/20/11The Music Box - Hollywood

The sound was completely off during the entire show. Static would come and go but was probably there about 95% of Blake's set. I believe he even commented on it. I've seen him 3 times and this was the worst one.

Truly a great performance by James Blake

by cementsuit on 7/15/11Webster Hall - New York

James Blake was truly an incredible performance. The album is great, but live is just astounding! I would definitely would see him again live! The trembling bass literally shakes you and the composition was great. When James said good night, the crowd's applause did not stop and cheers were continued, James Blake and the band came out did another performance. PERFECT WAY TO FINISH THE NIGHT!!
