About Jacksonville Symphony

Jacksonville Symphony on Tour

Under the leadership of British conductor Courtney Lewis, the Jacksonville Symphony has entered its eighth decade as an esteemed classical ensemble. The orchestra is one of the few American troupes of its kind to have their own concert hall: the elegant, European-styled Robert E. Jacoby Symphony Hall at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts, which offers seating for 1,800 and houses the magnificent Bryan Concert Organ, built-in 1914 with over 6,200 pipes. The Jacksonville Symphony performs an average of 100 shows per year at the hall, but they’re also known to tour venues throughout the state of Florida, including schools and senior homes, attracting an annual audience of over 100,000.

Jacksonville Symphony Background

The Jacksonville Symphony has been a north Florida institution since 1949, and throughout its storied history, it’s played host to some of the most iconic names in popular music, including big-band maestro Benny Goodman, legendary composer Leonard Bernstein, opera legend Luciano Pavarotti, musical comedian Victor Borge, sitar master Ravi Shankar and pop queen Olivia Newton-John. Such A-list guests have helped give the symphony a profile that extends far beyond the city limits - the orchestra has made regular appearances on NPR’s classical-music showcase, Performance Today, and they’ve been invited to perform at such hallowed stages as New York’s Carnegie Hall. But for all their nationally recognized achievements, the Jacksonville Symphony has always maintained a strong connection to its local community, broadcasting its performances on the city’s public radio station, WJCT, and nurturing the next generation of Floridian classical talent through its Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra program. More recently, the symphony has entered the digital age by hosting live streams and an archive of past performances on its website, while their Spotify page features playlists of classical pieces to be featured in upcoming performances.

    The most amazing musical experience

    by G8trsrgods on 3/13/18Daily's Place - Jacksonville

Quite simply the single best musical experience of my life. Wyclef is a true musician whose repertoire of talents ranges from hip hop/rap to 1952 French ballads and back to world street party funk. Hearing his music with the backing of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra was amazing. Do yourself a favor and make sure to catch the show if it’s anywhere close to you!!!

The JSO and Storm Large.....amazing performance!

by Ricjohn on 3/5/18Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts - Jacoby Hall - Jacksonville

One unique performance for the Symphony and Jacksonville. Great music of course, but outstanding vocals and dramatics by Storm Large formerly of Pink Martini...just so refreshing and different for our city! More events like this will draw a new and totally different audience to see the JSO. Well done!

    Holiday Pops.....my new tradition!

by CATMILLS on 12/12/17Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts - Jacoby Hall - Jacksonville

Loved, loved, loved!!! Not only will Holiday Pops become a new tradition for me but I hope to attend more Jacksonville Symphony performances during the year. We are blessed in Jacksonville to have such talent. The concert was so heartwarming and such a magnificent way to enjoy true "reality".....no computer assisted anything. No devices. Just real talent, real voices, real instruments, real emotions........something very lacking in today's world. Thank you Symphony for a wonderful afternoon. Can't wait to see you again!!

    Bond and Beyond - Excellent

by CanineDad on 4/25/17Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts - Jacoby Hall - Jacksonville

The program was wonderful. The musicians played the music as if they had been playing these tunes for years. The soloist, Debbie Gravitte, was on her game and had lots of personality. The conductor, Michael Krajewski, was outstanding and he too, exhibited great personality. We have attended this concert previously and will go back when it is next offered. Overall, it was a great night out.

    Great show

by PenguinQueen on 3/21/17Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts - Jacoby Hall - Jacksonville

I finally got to see the Chieftains live. Paddy Moloney is hilarious, and I, along with other members of the audience, ended up on stage with everyone for the final piece.

Journey & the Jax Symphony - an amazing mix!

by SaintJohnsFan on 1/18/17Times-Union Ctr Perf Arts Jacoby Hall - Jacksonville

If you did not go, you missed out. The special guest that joined the Symphony added an amazing mix. A perfect compliment to each other. The quirky conductor made us laugh. Did not want it to end. Our seats were double booked, but they made it right and we were bumped to the orchestra area! Bonus!
