The Apollo atmosphere, the snart and funny presentationsand of course tha band! Tight skilly and with precision , you could just relax and join the ride
Irivin Mayfield and his guests didn't disappoint. An evening of stomp, romp and gospel with modern arrangements, dedicated and brilliant musicians all deserve an individual mention.Program well constructed with songs and band. The beat went on …..we got the vibe and loved it. Left exhilarated and energized. More.more please.
I wish everyone knew just how good the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra is. Bandleader, Irvin Mayfield, in insanely talented and a great showman as well. The entire show and every single orchestra member gave a stellar performance. Opening band, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band were also quite good and really got the audience warmed up. It was a night and concert that I wish didn't have to end.
I was never much of a jazz fan, but I am now! Besides the music and amazing guests, the show was a lot of fun. Irvin Mayfield is very entertaining and talented. But I must admit, I was there for Haley Reinhart.
Relished PHJB music but some vocals were difficult to understand. Vocals by other guest artists were delightful. The trumpet solos were individuals were attempting to out screech each other was beyond painful and should be dropped. The scramble to sort out music sheets at the beginning of the show revealed a lack of preparation/organization. The request to make noise for the radio audience became tiresome. Overall though a good representation of jazz and big-band music
This was a fabulous evening.. We love jazz.. Love Irvin.he was great as always.. BUT, Haley was unbelievable.. She added so much to the show. We will be watching her for sure
THis was such an intimate and casual evening of music. Such a great group of artists. I enjoyed every minute!
The music and atmosphere were great! The theater has been nicely redone. Great night for a good cause.
Irvin Mayfield and the NOJO are always wonderful, and you never know what other great musician Irvin will bring along. Additionally, Irvin is an engaging host, entertaining you with his funny banter. The venue was ok, sound quality pretty good, seating very good from most any where in the venue, The bar was good enough, the staff friendly and helpful. However, the location of the Joy is not great, you have to walk through some undesireables to get there as parking is not on site. If this is a problem, I recommend parking where you are comfortable and grabbing a cab - no more than $10 with in the quarter area. That being said I always try to catch events that the full NOJO is playing. And you can always catch a small portion of the NOJO at Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse on Wed. nights.
The show was amazing! It should be rebroadcast on WWOZ. The original compositions written by Mayfield were timeless pieces. This was NOJO at it's best. Ed Peterson did a unforgettable piece one the audience did not want to end. A great tribute by a very talented orchestra for a Great Man, Mr. Ernest Gaines. Grateful to have been there, an experience I will never forget. Congratulations NOJO on delivering a Grammy winning performance!
