About

Best known by the moniker Iron & Wine, Samuel Beam's stunning acoustic guitar and quiet voice once again made waves with the release of Ghost on Ghost, his fifth studio album. This largely experimental record delves into the supposedly disparate worlds of pop, R&B and jazz, meanwhile proving the singer's impressive versatility. The accompanying tour schedule included several appearances throughout the United States, as well as a handful in Australia. As usual, Iron & Wine showed no problems selling tickets, with fans anxious to experience both new singles and classic tracks. Ghost on Ghost came as a welcome followup to Kiss Each Other Clean, which similarly represented a departure from Beam's typical acoustic style.

Beam's musical endeavors as Iron & Wine began in 2002, when he released his first album, The Creek Drank The Cradle. This entire collection was recorded in Beam's home studio and mainly featured vocals, acoustic guitar, slide guitar and the banjo. Iron & Wine later followed up with Our Endless Numbered Days, which was recorded in a professional studio. Later albums included 2007's The Shepherd's Dog and the 2011 release Kiss Each Other Clean, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 charts. Following the release of these later albums, Beam took part in multiple concert series, showing off a live voice that was just as gentle as what fans had heard on their favorite Iron & Wine albums. Although a handful of different instruments are incorporated into the Ghost on Ghost promotional tour in hopes of better reflecting Beam's journey into jazz and pop, the same poignant feel of this brilliant musician's tracks is always maintained for the sake of dedicated listeners.

I was a little disappointed that he played with a band. Was expecting to see him with his acoustic. Seemed like the band hadn't practiced together long enough. I would still recommend seeing him. He's still one of my favorites.

  • Sam Beam is awesome!

First off Sam Beam has an awesome beard...and his music is quite amazing. I absolutely loved the show. The acoustics were fantastic. I could hear the band well and clear. It sounded just like I imagined. The venue was appropriate. I would not only recommend, but require any Iron & Wine fan to attend a show. I cannot describe the experience. This music is something very special to me so I am going to have a very high love for Sam Beam.

The whole show was awesome. A great mix of old songs changed up a bit with some more soul and percussion, a few new songs, and some acoustic versions that were just beautiful. I almost cried when I heard Resurrection Fern acoustic at the end. Must see live! :D

by cmartypants on 11/24/10Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

He and his accompany musicians played a great show. I liked how he played a lot of his stuff completely differently. a lot more built up. I like where he went with it.

  • Way surpassed my expectations

by AKkv on 11/23/10Florida Theatre Jacksonville - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I'll try to keep it short & sweet, which is easy-- the show was incredible. Seriously amazing. I expected it to be good, but it was the best. He is so genuine, so filled with raw talent. I had a few Iron and Wine songs, but now i'm a big fan. It was entertaining and captivating, and the opening act (Nomo) did such a good job.

  • Iron and Wine was excellent!

  • Not a show to miss

    by dab10210 on 11/23/10Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

I am a huge Iron & Wine fan, but even I had my doubts about how dynamic a show it would be. Sam Beam is not only a terrific musician but also an AMAZING entertainer. He was personable and hilarious, all around terrific stage presence. From the very beginning (when he sang Flightless Bird a cappella) he had the entire crowd under his spell. After performing the first 4 or 5 songs acoustically he brought the band out and they really changed things up. He didn't play any song the way you'd expect (it was all very funky). He even treated the audience to 2 new songs.

  • Sam Beam...

by ResidentFern on 11/23/10Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

is awesome where ever he is at. He is an amazing artist and I did not question his live performance to be any different. He recognized the poster from a previous show of his and undoubtly signed it. Beautiful artist, director, lyricist....musician. A gift to meet.

  • If you can, go see Sam Beam live!

by fancydigs on 11/23/10Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

The best part of the show was all of the re-set Iron and Wine tunes. That, and Sam's brilliant voice and stage presence.

  • Iron & Wine concert different than I expected

by Anonymous on 11/23/10Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 3 out of 5

I love Iron & Wine for its acoustic music however at the concert Sam Beam decided to play around and do something different. The drums, brass, and other instruments from the previous band were incorporated in alot of the songs. The result was a completely different style of music from what Iron & Wine typically plays. I would have been fine had only a few songs been played like this however I felt like it dominated the majority of the concert. As it was nearing the end of the tour I understand that Sam may have been bored of playing the same thing the same way but I felt like I didnt truly get the full acoustic experience from an Iron & Wine concert that I was expecting. I hope to attend another concert soon which will primarily just be Sam Beam and his guitar, much more like the style I'm used to.

  • Amazing. Simply Amazing!!

    by TexasGirl01 on 11/23/10Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Sam Beam is a gifted songwriter and storyteller. He held the audience captivated in silence with a cappella renditions of "The Trapeze Swinger" and "Flightless Bird, American Mouth".

  • Play'n the New Stuff!

by Jasbot on 11/23/10Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Great show by Iron & Wine! Was a great to see them in a small/intimate venue like Fitzgeralds, and an extreme joy to see the group perform with the support of keyboard/drum-kit/saxophone/trumpet and base guitar. At my guess, they played 80% new music and 20% from past albums which was a true pleasure, it is great to see they are collaborating and continuing to re-invent their music! Great job!

  • Great show, decent venue

by Deitz on 11/23/10Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Samuel Beam puts on a great show and the band was outstanding. They are interactive, musically strong and fun to watch. My only drawback with the show was that the people working at Fitzgerald's would clean up beer bottles and chuck them in the trash can with rocket force which would make a loud ruckus about every few minutes. In particular, there was an encore from Sam which was slow, beautiful and melodic which wasn't without the ear piercing sound of breaking glass throughout the whole thing. The upside is that there isn't a bad spot in the house plus, the sound was mixed great. I could hear everything from lyrics to the percussionists mad science lab of shakers, bells and blocks.

Usually you can expect an up and coming par opening band however Nomo was amazing and a musical treat! Iron and wine was simply amazing and well played " You have the record at home, so were going to do something a little different"

  • iron and wine

by snicklefrizz on 11/19/10Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

I liked the venue, show started late, maybe about 9pm,actually liked the opening band better than Iron and Wine.I had got the tickets for my daughter who wound up not being able to go.I sold her ticket to a sketchy scalper guy outside the show for $35 which is about $5 more than what I paid so I guess that worked out.

  • Beautiful show, Beautiful theater

    by Blueruby78 on 11/19/10Florida Theatre Jacksonville - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I LOVED that he opened with "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" with just his voice. Then he did several more songs with just him and his guitar. My favorite stuff! And the middle/later part of the show with newer songs and more instruments was hypnotizing. Finally, the perfect encore was just him and his guitar singing "Resurrection Fern". It was neat how he asked for the house lights to be turned up in the Florida Theater so that he could see our faces. That made for a more intimate feeling to the show.

  • Iron & Wine was amazing!

by cashim on 11/19/10Florida Theatre Jacksonville - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Iron & Wine was an awesome show...I wish he would've performed Boy with a Coin, but other than that it was really great! I even enjoyed Nomo, the openning band.

  • Sam Beam is an incredible musician.

This show was SO GOOD. Hearing his voice live, and hearing his mastery and control of the music in person was an experience I'll never forget. Ever.
