Louisiana-born Irma Thomas grew up singing in a Baptist church choir before landing a gig singing with New Orleans bandleader Tommy Ridgley. She earned GRAMMY nominations in 1991 for the album Live! Simply the Best and in 1999 for the bluesy Sing It!, and in 2007 she took home the win for Best Contemporary Blues Album GRAMMY for her critically acclaimed LP After the Rain. Since then sheís been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, wowed fans with several appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and won two Blues Music Awards.

    Queen of New Orleans

by Stufferini on 1/23/17Golden Nugget - Biloxi - Biloxi

This concert was great. Irma Thomas put on a great performance. She sang all of her oldie but goodies. Irma invited the fans to sing along, dance, and the audience requested their favorite song. It was the best show in town.

She still has the voice after 75 years

by MisterDigger on 2/9/16Island View Casino - Gulfport

I chose this show in a comfy theater rather than a hot and sweaty outdoor festival back in her home town. What I forgot about with this arena is that it is always general admission and one must stand in line for about 30 minutes before the doors open. By the time I got in, my back and feet were killing me. I told myself that I would never buy another ticket for an artist playing here. She was led to the stage by an assistant and then announced her upcoming 75th birthday on February 18th. Her voice is amazingly still there! Her six piece backup band was awesome. No set list at all and just playing whatever felt right. Unfortunately for me, I had been up since four in that morning, so I was in serious need of espresso just to be able to drive back to Louisiana. I wound up leaving after "It's Raining", which was about 40 minutes into her set.

    Jazz Fest in December

by Denola on 12/26/13House of Blues New Orleans - New Orleans

Every band played a fantastic set in an intimate setting. It was like having all of jazz fest in one night, but more up close and personal. Also, the proceeds go to NOCCA, a school very close to my heart. The spirit of Daniel Price is strong.

by cajuncutie53 on 2/14/13Island View Casino - Gulfport

High school memories came flooding back as Miss Irma sang. She may move a little slower, but her voice & humor are as strong as ever. The handkerchiefs were waiving & everyone really enjoyed the fantastic show!

I've been blessed to have seen Irma live in concert twice (12/28/08) & (06/19/10) and I'm about to blessed to see her again for the third time this coming January 12, 2013. Never have a performer made you feel so at home and comfortable. She is beyond down to earth and very real. Her voice is still in tip top amazing shape. Bless her soul! If I could go to an Irma show every weekend, I would be there first in line, each and every week. I love me some Irma! I'm going to attach a picture she and I took in June of 2010!

    An unforgettable night

by Sturat on 12/31/11The Joy Theater - New Orleans

They couldn't have picked anyone better to reopen the Joy Theater than The Soul Queen Of New Orleans. At the risk of sounding trite and cliched, she DOES keep getting better and better with age. Kudos to those that rebuilt the theater too, it's a wonderful and cozy venue. Here's hoping for many wonderful nights like night #1 for a LONG time.

    Great Night of Song

by ProudBlueJay on 12/31/11The Joy Theater - New Orleans

Irma wowed the audience with her new stuff and then she knocked their socks off with her old goodies. After 51 years , she can still bring the house down. I have seen her many times in many different venues. She shined at the JOY. I couldn't think of a more traditional opening act for the new JOY then Irma Thomas.

    Irma Thomas/Lance Ellis

by bigeasy1617 on 12/31/11The Joy Theater - New Orleans

WOW! what a fantastic job the owners/developers did a great job of bringing "the Joy" back to the Joy theater. Fantastic, feels like back in the day. Great state of the art sound system,lighting/ screens Only negative, and it was large, Irma did not due a sound check and let the house sound engineers do the mix. Bad move :-) Bass was way too loud and had no life to it. Bass drum was waaaaaaaaaay to loud. Irma was hard to hear because of the mix and loudness of her backup band. Everybody (including Irma where too loud to the point of distorting the sound. On the other hand, Lance Ellis had his own sound engineer doing the mix. Mix and sound was fantastic! Will we go back? We've already got our tickets for the next event!

To see the Joy open again and folks smiling as they entered was so very special. The sound is amazing and I love the new chairs! Irma sparkled and she was the best show to open the venue. Welcome back Joy --- Great Joy Irma!

    Irma Thomas at the JOY

by DuaneBrie on 12/31/11The Joy Theater - New Orleans

Great show and the Joy theatre is a gem. Only thing is the huge tv screens advertising and on during the show. No need for them when most seats, if not all can see the stage, they are tacky and distracting.
