About

With a warm, relatable sound that has captured the hearts of countless fans, Michaelson's compelling story as a highly successful unsigned artist first achieved national attention with multiple song placements on the hit television series Grey's Anatomy. The show's producers became so enamored of her music that they chose Michaelson's "Keep Breathing" to air during the final six minutes of the 2007 season finale, resulting in massive and immediate mainstream exposure. Her ubiquitous hit single "The Way I Am," off her breakthrough album Girls and Boys, was not only spun on radio stations all over the country, but was featured in a major national television commercial for Old Navy. Ingrid has since appeared on Good Morning America, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and was the first unsigned musician ever selected as a Vh1 "You Oughta Know" artist.  The New York Times has described Michaelson's unique musical approach as "soulful, idiosyncratic" and Entertainment Weekly described her as "a deft mistress of quirk folk... a grassroots phenomenon." Ingrid has released all of her music via her own Cabin 24 label which has sold nearly 400,000 albums and over 1.5 million singles to date.

With the release of her new album Everybody, Ingrid brings a newfound wisdom and maturity to her music, gleaned from touring the world with musicians like Dave Matthews and Jason Mraz. On Everybody, she showcases a matured point of view as she explores a new self-realized, independent relationship with the idea of love. "'Everybody' - which is about a big idea," explained Paste Magazine, "chronicles a relationship so intense and volatile that both lovers lose themselves within it. ‘Everybody' is truly everybody's."

    Best. Live Performance. Ever.

by freck on 9/21/09Webster Hall - New York

Ingrid's live performances were just as good, if not better, than her albums. She's part stand-up comedian and too darn adorable for words. Audience participation is a big thing for her and it was an unforgettable show. Do NOT miss it!

    Must see!

by PhotoJ on 9/19/09Webster Hall - New York

Her vocal quality live is absolutely no different than listening to her albums. It was shocking how good she was live. Incredible! One of the best concerts I've been to bar none. And she's hysterical...hope she comes out with a live cd with all her antics. Must see live if you are a fan!

    Ingrid is a joy!

by cjlucre on 9/17/09Webster Hall - New York

As exspected, the show was just splendid. Ingrid just lights up the stage with a special voice and strong vocal ability. She is so very happy to be performing-that it is obvious to all lucky enough to be present at Webster Hall last evening. She seems a very strong women and sweet and bubbly and smoking caliente to my eye, while showing everyone that she is a great performer-just getting on a roll. A great night!

    Everything I Hoped

by Bear4Doll on 9/17/09Webster Hall - New York

This has been by far one of the most entertaining and amazing shows I've been too. I felt so comfortable and at ease that it was like a show in my living room. Ingrid Michaelson was wonderful! Her voice sounds even better live and her band complements her beautifully. Not only was the music great but Ingrid totally encouraged audience participation. Her stories between sets had me laughing so hard that I actually started crying and hiccuping. I came to hear good music and left with a show. She is truly a great artist and I'm glad that I got to see her work her magic..

    Ingrid was AMAZING!

by BuddahB on 9/17/09Webster Hall - New York

Her performance was great! She plays an amazing live show. She expressed how truly talented she is as she performed a variety of songs from her most recent album as well as older records. She kept the crowd alive and thrilled with her quirky sense of humor and encouraged that the crowd to participate and sing along. Overall the show was amazing and I can't wait until she comes back to New York.

    Ingrid the Great!!!

by KgBianco on 9/17/09Webster Hall - New York

As always Ingrid Michaelson puts on another amazing show. They played an hour and 45 minutes which is unheard of in this world now a days. She played songs from her last 3 albums and did her usual stick of singing old sitcom songs to her songs. She is endearing and lovely, her band is so nice and her bassist is histerical. I was right against the front of the stage on the right side by Allie Moss' feet. The only draw backs, no reenty if you want to go out and smoke which stinks if you are a smoker like me; the drinks were a little high priced but where isn't; and finally I just really wished Ingrid would have played a couple songs off of her first album 'Slow the Rain' or at least 1 song from it. She no longer remembers how to play most of them so she stays away from playing them. My word of advise to Ingrid "Oldies are goodies too!" I also think that the openers should have switched places Johnny should have gone second he is definately going somewhere. I think everyone should see Ingrid at the very least once. She has amazing talent and class, and a great sence of humor.

    song & comedy in one

by Laur514 on 9/17/09Webster Hall - New York

Ingrid is an extremely talented songwriter and singer and she also has a steak of comedy in her. Between every song she had the audience laughing so hard. The only let down of the show was that she didn't sing a lot of her old stuff. It felt like the energy lowered a lot during these times. Still a great performance.

Ingrid Michaelson: Webster Hall 16 September 2009

by RHGirl57 on 9/17/09Webster Hall - New York

Every so often rtb, violaleeblue, and I try to remember how we started this insane concert-going schedule and we can’t pinpoint the moment it happened. Like most addictions, it was a gradual slide. A few days ago I was thinking about the first time I saw Ingrid, which was at Webster Hall almost a year and a half ago with rtb and violaleeblue. It wasn’t the first concert we saw together but after the show we made a date to see one of the opening acts (David Ford), who had impressed us (and continues to impress us more each time we see him). So I considered this show to be our concertversary – not date-wise but venue plus performer-wise. The show was sold out and I got there early so I could get my prime spot on top of the bass speaker. A half-hour before the doors opened the line snaked around the corner. Luckily most of the people wanted to stand near the stage, so I got my spot and waited for rtb and violaleeblue. The first opener was Johnny Marnell playing acoustic guitar. As soon as he started to sing I thought of Dave Matthews and Kenny Rankin. His music is pop/folk/pseudo-jazz and is certainly pleasant enough. He plays well and has a lovely voice. My favorite song was not one of his originals but his cover of “Let’s Stay Together,” which is when he really reminded me of Kenny Rankin. Next was Greg Holden, who is on tour with Ingrid. This was another solo acoustic folk act. Holden likes to talk. Since he’s British, I enjoyed listening, but he really does like the sound of his own voice. His cover was “Walking on Sunshine,” which he slowed down and the audience sang along and that was fun. He also did a sing-along drinking song and invited Allie Moss and Bess Rogers from Ingrid’s band to sing with him. Unfortunately he never backed off far enough from the mic so we could only hear him. During the break Allie waved trying to get someone to come on stage. I figured it was Ingrid and suddenly she ran on stage and joined them in the chorus. Finally Ingrid Michaelson and the band came out. Newcomer is producer Dan Romer on organ, percussion, accordion, and horn. Allie Moss plays acoustic guitar but her true purpose in the band is to provide glorious backup vocals. Bess Rogers also sings back up and plays electric guitar. Elliot Jacobson is on drums and Chris Kuffner plays bass and mandolin. Allie was wearing a rhino t-shirt that I must own (I collect rhinos). They opened with a new song with Ingrid playing her ukulele. When we saw her in Staten Island last year she mentioned that she had stepped on her custom made ukulele. This must have been it because it was a really beautiful unique instrument. Ingrid switched back and forth between center mic and keyboards. For the second song they went to the familiar – “Die Alone” and the audience went crazy. It’s difficult to write another Ingrid review. What can I say that I haven’t said before? She has a wonderful unique slightly quirky but beautiful voice. Her songs are mostly about love and heartache and she writes telling lyrics and catchy melodies. The audience sings along with every song and sits quietly to listen to the new songs that she introduces us to at every show. She’s a prolific songwriter and always has a song she’s just written. She’s very funny. And now she’s taken off the filter so the jokes are funny and crude. Very crude. After telling us that she thinks about Paula Deen whenever she sings the line about “spackling butter on her whole grain bread” in “Die Alone” she sang “Once was Love.” As expected the audience went crazy again for “The Hat,” because there is expected audience participation - singing the chorus and hands raising the roof three times quickly on “that you were.” For “You and I” Ingrid played ukulele while the rest of the band circled around her and each took a turn with lyrics. There was a shout-out to the sound engineer since he’d complained that they always clapped too close to the mic so this time they all bent over and clapped near the floor. The band then did “Be OK” and “The Chain.” For the latter Romer played the horn on the crescendo and it added a lovely touch. All this time on the road shows. Ingrid and the band are tight, the arrangements are more professional and layered, and she is more and more comfortable with the audience. Although adding the filter back wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Ingrid sent the band off-stage and did her cover of “Creep,” which is usually a solo encore. She called Greg Laswell out to sing with her on a song they recently co-wrote. The band came back and they did “Incredible Love.” Ingrid has lots of road stories now and she told us about a harmonica in one audience and then someone upstairs started playing one. So she sang “In the Still of the Night” and had the harmonica blow an accent after every line. For the introduction to “Everybody” she explained that the new album is about how everybody wants love. Then we got “Men of Snow” and “Locked Up” in which we got to sing each band member’s ‘badahbahs’. Except for Kuffner who ascended into scat heaven and we just clapped in awe. And then there was her usual turning other songs to fit her melodies – “Ice Ice Baby” and the theme from The Prince of Bel Air got her special treatment before she ended with “Maybe.” For the encore we were treated to another song set to an Ingrid melody – this time about Mexican food since that’s the only good food the band can find on the road. Someone from the audience ridiculously called it racist, Ingrid cut him down to size, and then joked she was going to sing about Chinese people. They ended the night with “Far Away” and Ingrid played around with the melody to this very familiar song. The mandolin and accordion also helped to make it a brand new song. The band played for almost an hour and a half but the night felt very short. Ingrid commented that it felt like they had just started. I was certainly willing to sit there for the rest of night.

Unique and all-pleasing at the same time

by wonderland01 on 9/17/09Webster Hall - New York

This would have gotten 5 stars, except the ticket said 7pm and Ingrid didn't perform until 9:45. One of her openers was an adorable British man, but still... there was a looot of waiting time, and NJ Transit only runs so late. I got there around 6:15, waited til the doors opened at 7, then got to stand close enough to touch the stage. I found myself at this concert because Ingrid is one of few artists my sister and I (with very different musical tastes) both love. I adore her songs, and she shows her vocal talent even when she's messing around, breaking into random covers or changing the lyrics to her songs. I honestly don't love her new CD as much as the old ones, but still found the whole concert very entertaining and well worth the ticket price. She's something to see live. Also, she's funny. I've seen her before, and I'll see her again - she puts on a good show.

    Loved Ingrid Michaelson!

by maberho on 9/17/09Webster Hall - New York

Ingird Michaelson has put together a very enjoyable and memorable show. Her well-crafted songs were highlighted with nifty arrangements featuring an excellent band, sharp harmonies and playful banter with the band and audience. Ingrid's on-stage persona is both strained, due to her apparent discomfort being in the spotlight, yet personable and cute, as she works through her issues. What you get from her is an intelligent, warm, and witty singer/songwriter who knows who she is as a performer and who stays fairly true to herself. I enthusiastically recommend going to see Ingrid Michaelson on this tour. However, her two opening acts, I struggle to say, were a struggle for me to sit through. Admittedly, at 56 I was perhaps the oldest member of the audience, but I do not think that this was much of a factor in my conclusion. In early August, I saw Jason Mraz who had two opening acts, K'naan and G. Love & Special Sauce. They were much easier to listen to. But what are you gonna get for $20? Anyway, during the first act, I noticed that much of the audience was into the opening song. But as the set moved on, and it became clear that he was an average Joe, there was a lot less of that and eventually many, if not most of the crowd resumed talking to one another, while texting and whatever else on their phones. So, it wasn't just me. The next guy, not even the equal of the over-matched first guy, could keep the audience focused, although some in the crowd cooperated with his appeal to participate in one or two of his songs, mercifully assisted on one of them by Ingrid Michaelson herself. Mostly though, these two performers just excruciatingly delayed hearing Ingrid for about 2 1/2 hours. It was coffee house stuff, but at Webster Hall. The concert was scheduled to begin at 7:00 and she did not come onstage until shortly after 9:30. I thought it was too much to endure, and judging from the behavior of the audience, although not apparently bothered to the extent that I was, most were pretty indifferent. Yes, you gotta love Ingrid for trying to help out two hopeful "artists" but it was not a convincing way to show love to her audience. Sorry, I'm not a hard-hearted, crusty old man, but I wanted to put this part in play. Ingrid Michaelson and her band put on an excellent show, though!
