  • II trovatore was forgettable

too dark, no scenery changes , fell asleep and then went home at intermission. A waste of money.

  • Please! No more electronic staging.

This was the first Arizona Opera Company opera I have attended, having just moved to Tucson . The voices were superb, the chorus was fantastic, the scenery couldn't have been worse. The tickets even in the second balcony are a stretch financially for my husband and me. How dreadful to have such a professional production nearly ruined with the electronic gimmicks which were not only distracting, but very nearly spoiled the whole opera. In addition, I presume that projection process required the excessive darkness on the stage which effectively covered up the beauty of the new costumes. (By the way this was only the second time I've attended Il Trovatore, but am an avid opera fan.) I hope that the production manager, who did ask for comments, does not decide to continue with the special effects scenery attempts. If that is the case, next season we will sadly decline to spend any money at all on tickets.

Good production, voices a little uneven and hopefully the digital renderings will get better.

First time opera goer in Phoenix. Prior to this , Boston and New York. This compares quite favorably.

  • Il Trovatore was spellbinding,

We enjoyed this wonderful opera, especially the amazing voices of the performers. The one thing we did not care for was the stage sets, which were images rather than usual sets. I felt they detracted from the performance and did not really match the scenes.

The staging was very good. They really evoked the right atmosphere. The cast had excellent voices. The orchestra was top notch as always.

  • very poor slide show scenery -- excellent vocals

the poor staging crushed what would have been an otherwise above average production.

  • Il Trovatore? Burdened by a Contrived Plot

by SandiaV on 3/4/13Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 2 out of 5

This is actually two operas - the first one a medieval morality play, the second more typical of a soap opera. The story line is confused by the emotions of the characters coupled with the perceived need for revenge. The music and performers? Great. That was very enjoyable, but coupled to such a story, not overly satisfying.
