About

IAN MCLAGAN IN CONCERT:

For more than half a century, keyboardist and singer Ian McLagan has been a prominent force in British rock and roll. He was a key member of the Rod Stewart-fronted band Faces, and he's worked with a staggering array of artists including the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, and Bob Dylan. As a solo artist, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer emphasizes his solid mastery of R&B, blues, and roots rock with old school concerts high on energy and showmanship. Though his setlists are heavily comprised of new material like “All I Wanna Do” and “Shalalala”, he also thrills longtime fans with soulful renditions of classic Faces tunes like “Glad And Sorry” and "You're So Rude". On stage he mans the keyboards as his seasoned  backup group The Bump Band accompanies him with smooth R&B grooves and memorable hooks. Ticket buyers will be charmed by his entertaining stories about Small Faces’ heyday and his traditional Irish roots. It all adds up to unforgettable live shows that prove why he is a musical legend.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ian McLagan was born in Hounslow, England and took up the piano as a teenager. He started playing in bands in the ‘60s, first with The Muleskinners and then with The Boz People. In 1965 he was recruited to mod rock collective Small Faces, which was renamed Faces in 1969 after Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood joined. After Faces disbanded in 1975 McLagan focused on his solo career, releasing his debut album Troublemaker in 1979 and following up in 1980 with Bump In The Night. Over the next two decades he was a sought after session keyboardist, working with revered musicians including Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker, Jackson Browne, and The Rolling Stones. In 1994 he moved to Austin, TX, where he became a fixture of the city's renowned music scene. He released six solo albums between 2004-2014, including 2009's critically acclaimed Never Say Never and 2014's United States, which boasts mixing by Glyn Johns (The Faces, The Who) and mastering by Bob Ludwig (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones). McLagan was inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Faces and Small Faces in 2012.

It has been since 1975 (Faces final tour) that I have seen Ian McLagan. After buying, "Never Say Never," a few years ago I quickly regained interest in his career. When I saw he was playing Birdy's I immediately got tickets. This was for the most part, a solo show. Bassist/guitarist, Jon Notarthomas accompanied on several songs. Ian played a good mix of solo and Faces material with his distinct style and sound. Aside from a few starts and stops to get keyboard settings correct and the occasional lyric flub, Ian played a wonderful show. Interspersed with some great music were entertaining stories of his time with Small Faces and Faces. Ian promised to make a return with full band in the future, a date I'm anxiously awaiting. Following the show Ian spent a good amount of time doing a "Meet and Greet" and was very charming and engaging, chatting with each fan, taking photographs and signing anything and everything put in front of him. It's always a treat when one has the opportunity to see, hear and meet a Rock legend; Ian didn't disappoint.
