About

IAN ANDERSON IN CONCERT:

Progressive rock icon Ian Anderson rose to fame in the late '60's as the frontman of legendary prog outfit Jethro Tull, and he continues to carry on the band's legacy today. The eccentric singer and all-around musical talent elevated the flute to rock and roll prominence with his prodigious playing on classic hits like "The Witch's Promise" and "Living in the Past", and he continues to delight fans with virtuosic flute-playing at his mesmerizing live shows. Although Jethro Tull officially retired their name in 2011, fans can still catch Anderson on a highly anticipated tour that features the late great band's biggest hits as well as cuts from his 2014 album Homo Erraticus.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Scottish-born, British-raised Ian Anderson was exposed to music at an early age through his father's big band and jazz records. He formed his first band Blades in 1962, and a few years later he took up the flute as a way to set his sound apart from a musical landscape already saturated with hallowed guitarists. In 1967 he moved to London with the band, which underwent numerous name changes before finally settling on the name Jethro Tull, which had been suggested by a booking agent. The band's 1968 debut album This Was fared relatively well, but their 1969 sophomore album Stand Up launched them to international superstardom, topping the UK Albums Chart and establishing them as pioneers of the budding progressive rock movement. A string of critically and commercially successful albums followed over the next three decades, including a number of popular solo albums by Anderson. In 2012 Anderson released TAAB2: Whatever Happened to Gerald Bostock, a sequel to Jethro Tull's epochal 1972 album Thick as a Brick, and in 2014 he thrilled fans with the announcement of a tour featuring the legendary band's greatest hits performed alongside his album Homo Erraticus.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

" Great show. Being a Jethro Tull fan this was a real treat to see. Brought me back in time. This was a show all would enjoy.

" This was a great show. Ian Anderson is a world class musician who's showmanship is on full display. Ian is agile and puts on the full show!"

" I wasn't sure what to expect at his age. But dang this show was such an unexpected surprise. I could not get enough of Ian's flute playing. It gave me goose bumps. The show lasted at least 2 hours with one encore, another unexpected surprise."

    Fun

by T. G. on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Got to my seats and they were occupied by someone else. They had tickets. I believe they are my tickets that I did not receive in the mail although I cannot be sure. The box office very professionally remedied the situation and I was able to sit in my seat. It was fun to see Ian Anderson and to go back in time.

A great meld of all 5 Jethro Tull concerts I've seen!

by Jan on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

It was a bit of every great Jethro Tull concert I've seen since 1970. I've been to 5 of his concerts through the years and he never disappoints! An incredible showman, Ian showed the story of Jethro Tull through incredible video backgrounds, interviews with old bandmates and with his songs. An agile leaping leprecaun of a flutist, he seemed more like a kid than a 71 year old. The music was awesome. He is a genius!

    Ian in San Diego

by J. T. on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

This was the 4th time I have seen Ian Anderson and band. One of my favorites! I enjoyed the setlist. Of course there were some songs I would have liked to hear. Also enjoyed his stories. I liked the fact that he only used other singers on the video screen just for 2 or 3 songs. It had been too much the last time I saw them. Good show! I would recommend seeing them!

    Highly entertaining

by LiLi60 on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I could not miss the opportunity to see 50 years of Jethro Tull at the San Diego Civic Theatre, since becoming a “late bloomer” fan of his three years ago at the age of 56. Treating myself and a friend to fifth row seats added to the excitement and anticipation of what to expect. Initially, after reading a few reviews from the concert series that Ian's voice was not up to par, my friend was a little concerned about the quality of music that the band would provide. However, we both agreed that Ian had a FABULOUS performance that successfully showcased 50 years of his incredible and unique one-of-a-kind talent! The theatre packed a full house with Tull fans from all walks of life as Ian introduced the songs with “guest appearances” on screen (via Tull-a-vision) by musicians highly impacted by Tull’s exquisite sound. The sound was excellent and the seating was very comfortable. Overall, it was a high-rate performance that satisfied the entire audience from my observation!

The acoustics were terrible at the venue. The concert would.

by Papi on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

We couldn’t clearly hear ANYTHING being sung by Ian. If we didn’t already know the music, we wouldn’t be interested in listening to Jethro Tull’s music going forward. San Diego Civic Theatre should get a new sound person. I heard the recent plays have had similar issues.

Ian Anderson 50 years of Jethro Tull

by Lynda on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I had seen Jethro Tull in the 70's and 80's in Chicago and can recall how very energetic and spry Ian Anderson was. He was no different on this tour and I really enjoyed his show. He took the audience on a journey which covered Tull's 50 years complete with video clips from past members. I loved the show-although I would have enjoyed hearing all of "Thick as a Brick" instead of just a snippet. Great show-if you are a Tull fan it is a must-see!

    Jethro Tull - San Diego

by J.R. on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Outstanding Concert! We had great seats in Dress Circle. The sound was very good. Ian Anderson is an amazing performer. I had seen Jethro Tull long ago in 1980 in San Diego during the "A" Tour. It was very cool to see Ian Anderson again performing Jethro Tull music. He still plays the flute flawlessly. Check it out if you can!!

    Musically great...Vocally distracting

by j. on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Ian Andersons vocal was pretty distracting...not sure when he adopted this style but it hurts the melodies of the songs with this “dropping out” thing he does. Maybe he is just at the age where he cant sustain or carry out a note as once before. Some of the arrangements left something to be desired. The look back story format and video cameos of past members was a cool touch.

    Tull

by Ziggy on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Fantastic concert. Loved the music. Yet, many people such as myself like to video a bit of the evening and the Civic in San Diego is so restrictive I saw one usher practically crawl over people in the aisle to get to one of the offenders. Of course I got scolded 6 seconds into a video. This is a bit of overkill. The guy next to me was singing along with the words and he was more disruptive than any person taping. I’ll stay away from the Civic if at all possible.

A man's got to know his limitations....

by exjersey on 9/14/18Blue Hills Bank Pavilion - Boston

At some point, it's time to hang them up, whatever field you're in. It's time for Ian Anderson. The graphics/videos and other media portions of the show were excellent. Stage presence, energy, and flair are still evident, but there's no voice left at all. By the time they were 30 seconds into "My God" it became embarrassing. Maybe that's why there was so much video background, and almost certainly why there was no videoing or photography allowed. Enjoyed the 50th anniversary festivities, but there shouldn't be a 51st.

Jethro Tull's awesome nostalgic 50 years of music

by Sossity on 9/13/18Blue Hills Bank Pavilion - Boston

Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull put on amazing show last night covering their amazing fifty years of incredible music. Ian was in fine form parading around like a mad pirate ,playing his signature flute, harmonica, mandolin and guitar while directing his incredible band of musicians through songs covering from 68's This Was LP to 1987's grammy winner Crest of a knave and beyond. Ian was more like a man in his fiftys then the actual 71 he turned in August. His signature one legged pose while playing the flute was greeted with applause and admiration from the adoring sold out crowd. The band had an enormous screen on stage playing footage throughout of the long journey of a half century of music. Ian payed tribute to all former members of Tull and had many ex members appearing on skype requesting their favorite Tull song and the band then playing it. Highlights included Farm on the Freeway, My God, Bouree, Heavy Horses, To Old To Rock an Roll to Young to Die, Song From the Wood's , New Day Yesterday and an incredible version of Aqualung as the the crowd sang along with Ian every word as the screen played emotional footage of homeless desolate man and woman throughout. After a 5 minute standing ovation the band appeared once again and did an extended version of Locomotive Breath which had Ian going across the long pavilion stage on one leg playing the flute with the crowd going wild. The awesome night ended with the song cheerio and the band being introduced one by one as the crowd cheered. The standing ovation continued as the band locked arms and bowed to their adoring audience. Louie Armstrongs Wonderful World played as the massive crowd departed leaving all to wonder if we will ever see the Master and his amazing band again in the USA.
