About

Broadway In Chicago is excited to join Congo Square Theatre Company in announcing its continued 25th Anniversary celebration with the Chicago premiere of HOW I LEARNED WHAT I LEARNED, August Wilson's autobiographical show. Directed by Ken-Matt Martin and featuring Chicago's own Harry Lennix, this limited engagement will run from April 20 - May 5, 2024 at Broadway In Chicago's Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut St).

HOW I LEARNED WHAT I LEARNED follows Wilson's journey as a young Black writer from Pittsburgh to one of the most celebrated American playwrights of the 20th century. Written three years before his death, the one-man show recounts numerous stories from the author's long career and the lessons they taught about what it means to be a Black artist in America.

    Worth Seeing

by Amazing script - Amazing performance on 5/3/24Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

August Wilson is one of America's greatest dramatist. šŸ™Œ In the hands of a seasoned actor like Harry Lennix - who performed in Radio Golf (another Wilson play) - "HOW I LEARNED WHAT I LEARNED,"is a delightful, poignant play that reinforced why I so enjoy going to see and experience theater.

    As Iā€™m learning!

by Sandy on 5/1/24Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Well let Me start with this was my 1st time at The Broadway Palace Theatreā€¦ Iā€™m absolutely Impressed. From the Gentlemen who greeted Me as I entered, to The Staff at the window, as I needed to get a paper ticket, my phone was not cooperatingā€¦ To The Young Lady that gave Me directions and led Me into the theatre. The people that seated Me were patient I loved my seat! Mr. Harry Lennix, absolutely enjoyed Him. His range, passion, empathy, sense of humor, honor, dedication, and knowledge. I went all the periods as He described them, vowing to continue to be better and remember how Iā€™ve learned my life lessonsā€¦ Thank You All, Iā€™m coming out of a grief fog/journey at this point in my life. I intentionally attended this production to help Me Celebrate!

    Underrated and undersold

by Lori K on 4/26/24Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I'm a little obsessed with seeing all of August Wilson's plays and this was the addition that I didn't know I wanted to see. Watching the amazing Harry Lennix play Wilson really hit hard. All I could think is how sad I am that August is no longer with us. Fabulous show! The venue wasn't even half full and there's not a bad seat in the house. Everyone should see this.

A great peek into the mind of a genius

by TJ on 4/23/24Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I really enjoyed getting some insight into the factors that shaped August Wilson and getting a peek into his inner life. I've seen all of the plays in his century cycle but felt sad that there wouldn't be anything else from him so when this came out I was elated. I wish the sound quality had been better but otherwise it was a great show. Harry Lennix did a great job.

    Well done

by steve on 4/23/24Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I have been a big fan of Wilson's work since I saw "Fences"during its original B'way run. I think he is the greatest playwright of the last 50 years. I've read a fair amount about him and it seems he was a bitter and unhappy man, which is sad. This certainly comes across in this piece. I'm glad to have seen it. But I think his legacy of the 10 plays is what is most important. Thanks for doing this. I always wanted to see it. Steve Palmer
