    Aladdin was great!

by Anonymous on 3/26/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

First time I've seen Houston Ballet and a first to see Aladdin presented as a classical ballet! I enjoyed very much and appreciated the innovative choreography, lavish scenery, sets and costume designs. How refreshing compared to the same old Nutcracker and Swan Lake themes. I love those classical scores, but the stories and hence the dancing, so overdone by every regional and major ballet company in the world, is wearing thin...though I know everyone expects a good Nut to start the holiday season and financially support the rest of the year. I'm a local balletomane so my support defaults to Joffrey, the hometown team. However, Houston Ballet impressed me, especially the two lead dancers...well suited to each other who presented excellent, professional pas de deux. Saw a missed lift and not-so-great executed pirouettes from other dancers, but that was the ballet teacher analyzing instead of the audience member enjoying the moment. Overall, Houston has many great Aladdin moments and a lovely production that needs repeating.

    Aladdin-matches the hype

by CathrynB on 3/26/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

This was an excellent production. Stunning costumes. Set design was simple but very effective. Beautiful choreography, excellently enacted. Wonderful orchestral score, wonderfully played. Pacing was tops. I barely noticed this production was nearly 3 hours long. Good interaction between dancers. The few slips in performance were well covered and recovered from. Definitely glad I spent the money.

    Kudos to Houston

by Einna on 3/26/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

This was magnificent! Lavish sets and costumes and unusual choreography. Please bring it back. Having the Chicago Philharmonic play the exquisite music live was a special treat.

    Amazing

    by thegreatluna87 on 3/25/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Would have to say that this could possibly be one of the most beautiful shows that I have ever seen. Please be mindful that this is coming from a 26 year old man that doesn't see many play or shows like these.

    Fun show

by MLOpastHBintensiver on 3/25/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

The Houston Ballet's Aladdin was wonderful and true to the reviews' claim of "family friendly." It was a dynamic story well acted and danced. My friend and I especially enjoyed the accurate portrayal of muslim architecture in the scenery. Well done Houston Ballet. Always a pleasure to watch your shows.

    by JB18572 on 3/25/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Very well done. Costumes, dancing, storytelling was all outstanding. Chicago Philharmonic in the pit was top-notch. Highly recommend. Get seats as close as possible to see facial expressons.

Aladdin was the best ballet I've seen yet!

    by phantom852 on 3/25/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Such a great performance! It has a great score, great performers, and a great interpretation of the story! Although no words were uttered, you could easily "hear" words spoken through the fluid movements of the dancers. It was a performance for people of all ages. I highly recommend it if you have the chance to see it!

Totally forgettable but will continue to play

    by lgk395 on 3/25/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Ballet rests on two issues: the dance and the music. Productions and costumes may vary, but without these two elements, you do not have much. The dance was "okay" but suffered greatly because there was NO music that could inspire it. To use the word insipid would be complementary. The dancers were fine, but where were the traditional set pieces, the pas de deux that people remember other than the final act. The composer not only missed these elements but could go back to orchestration class and pull out the Berlios teext that has been used by countless composes to fill out their ideas with beautiful sounds. He needed more strings and less brass. other cities will want it because it is pleasantly staged and well costumed.

    Mesmerizing performance

by speedgrl on 3/26/12Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I'm not one to attend dance performances, but this was definitely a must see. My 8 year old daughter was intrigued the entire performance. The dancers were flawless.

    Top cast ballet

by Anonymous on 8/7/11Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

Despite the hot weather, the performance was outstanding. The Houston Ballet has really top talent and they displayed it with a range of numbers from classical ballet, to rhythmic movements with drums to funky. We especially liked the 8 ladies in leotards with drams and the colorful last act with spectacular dancing .

    HB at Pavilion

by AADHDT on 8/7/11Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

I thought the repertoire did not appeal to the audience. The 20 minute intermission between each of the works was unnecessary. Excerpts from classical works like a pas de deux in between the contemporary would have been a welcome addition.

    Nutcracker was not disappointing

by ChristmasGift2 on 12/28/09Brown Theater at Wortham Center - Houston

Took my two granddaughters to see the Nutcracker. Their ages were 18 and 6. Both loved it and both kept their eyes glued on the stage. When the six year old got home, her parents could not escape her excitement as she recapped everything for them!

    The Nutcracker

by danidances on 12/27/09Brown Theater at Wortham Center - Houston

The party scene was not the same as the original nutcracker story. I am certain Houston has a lot of talented male ballet dancers and therefore one guy did not have to depict multiple roles. I would like to see a greater variety of races on stage in the future. The set designs were great!

    Nutcracker - Houston Ballet

by AggieLvr on 12/27/09Brown Theater at Wortham Center - Houston

This was my first ballet and what an experience! I sat in the second level and had a bird's eye view of all the action. The first act highlights included a warm family scene in which Clara and her family greet all their guests. Each dancer was so animated! The second act ramped up the action a little bit and proved to be the more entertaining part. Dances from several parts of the world lit up the stage.

    Great Christmas Memories

by HugeDoraFans on 12/20/09Brown Theater at Wortham Center - Houston

I took my 4 y/o daughter to see this play for the second year. This year she seemed to enjoy it much more than last. She was so captivated by Act I and the Land of Snow. It's definitely worth seeing and we will certainly be back again next year for year 3.
