The world inside Tupac Shakur’s music and lyrics blazes to life in an entertaining new musical!
Broadway has always given voice to popular culture and social change. South Pacific, West Side Story, Hair, and Rent are among the hits that hit home. Now Broadway gives voice to the lyrics of Tupac Shakur, whose music has sold over 75 million albums.
Holler If Ya Hear Me is a riveting, non-biographical story about friendship, love, change, family and hope—an original work that is at once a love story and an unretouched picture of life in the streets.
The seating in the orchestra level of the Palace Theatre has been reconfigured to create a more intimate experience for the audience. The stage has been moved closer to the audience and the seats are now stadium style, making every seat prime viewing.
Holler If Ya Hear Me brings together some of the theater’s most prominent creative talents. Directed by Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun, Fences) with an original book by Todd Kriedler (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner), with choreography by Tony Award® winner Wayne Cilento (Wicked, How to Succeed…), and musical supervision by Daryl Waters (Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk, The Color Purple, Memphis.)
Don’t miss this chance to experience the sheer brilliance of one of the 20th century’s most prophetic and influential voices whose message continues to echo throughout our culture today.
The show will begin promptly at the time stated. No late seating.
The storyline was great and the music was orchestrated perfectly. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I am planning to see it again.
This "musical" is a disrespect to the lyrics of Tupac Shakur. Firt off, you cannot turn a gangster rapper's lyrics into a musical. It just simply will not fly based upon the language ("N" Word, sexual explicit words, etc.). To be short, it was just too flagrant. If anything, it would have been nice to see a "musical" on his life and not on his lyrics. I do not have anything negative to state regarding the cast per say. They did the job they were supposed to be which was sing gangster rap. In all, I see this play as an insult to Broadway and to Tupac in general. Please, no more of these kinds of shows. The venue was awesome (only bright moment).
Holler If You Hear Me was absolutely amazing. The cast is one of those lifetime ensembles that gels so well together it was if they had been working together for years. All of the cast members were incredibly skilled actors, and provided a WOW experience. They brought Tupac's words to life. I couldn't have asked for a better theatre experience.
Seeing Tupac's lyrics come to life on broadway stage was a great experience fore. I never thought that I would see true rap music in that fashion. The cast is talented and I found myself looking forward for the dialogue to end so I could hear them sing. However, I gotta be honest, it felt a little like a middle-school play. The story line was choppy and hard to follow. Certain elements of the musical didn't seem to fit with the lifestyle of the man. If the setting is early 90's, why is an iPod being given out and why is texting being discussed? I still don't understand who Benny was or why he died. And why did Saul William's character go to jail? Confusing. I was a little frustrated. But, when 'Calufornia Love' started playing, along with some if Pac's other greatest hits, I couldn't help but dance in my seat.
Holler if Ya Hear Me was a great play. The music and the story worked well together. I recommend that everyone goes to see it. There is a message in it for the young and old.
Very deep show regarding the streets. Great Show, Great Music.. Me and my daughter loved it.
Obviously you need to like Tupacs style of music, which we do. I never sat still and the cast kept you interested and connected...wonderful voices!
Why, oh why, didn't they put the lyrics atop the stage so an attendee could follow them (like the Met) as not everyone is familiar with them. They are what is great about the show. Set clever, but story line pretty ordinary and not up to the emotion behind the lyrics. Too bad - as lyrics had the making of a great show.
Not as familiar with the music as my family, but I totally enjoyed the show..his work was/ is as deep as Tony Morrison, Sonya Sanchez,as well as NickiG. As an older generation ,I 2 wast sure if the words were true to his works ,my daughter and 30 yr old granddaughter who's birthday we were celebrating assured me they were , good Good. Now I must learn more about this talented young man who taken from us much too soon.
See this week, won't be around longer.great seats great price bad show
I've been to so many Broadway shows and this one rivals the best (Wicked, West Side Story, Hairspray, Dreamgirls, Chorus Line, etc) and surpasses most. At the same time that we were entertained we were educated, we were stirred up and deeply moved. Tupac's lyrics are outstanding and important. The cast is outstanding; great rap, acting and dancing (which I would have liked more of). Though there are lead characters this is really an ensemble piece and the way they've been directed makes everything feel real. The audience was invited into their world and schooled. My teenaged daughter and her friend loved it too. We all can't wait to go again.
I had an awesome time at Holler if ya hear me. My partner truly enjoyed show and she was dancing in her seat throughout it.
yes some of the rappers were a little hard to understand, while others were great and so moving, so you are losing a lot of this amazing poetry...enjoyed the beautiful dance but would have even liked more, but maybe that would have dressed it up too much and we would have lost the message and the seriousness of what is being conveyed, although the dance was quite intense and mesmerizing and did support the show.
Whoever thought a Broadway Show using Tupac Shakur's lyric & music would work, has to be institutionalized! This musical has absolutely no plot, no character development and throws in songs solely for the purpose of familiarity. Save your time and money by not going to this train wreck of a show!
This one is gonna close fast, awful. Skip this one!
A spectacular cast makes up for a somewhat repetitive book, in a show that gains momentum throughout. You don't have to be a rap fan to be entertained....great acting, excellent music, inspiring.
Loved the play ! Loved the music! Loved the dancing! I thought it was very real and honest. It was a very exciting play .
My family and I enjoyed the show immensely! The cast was superb! The music was awesome, and I am planning on going to see it again. My son took photos with Saul Williams, and he was so nice. I hope the show stays on Broadway for a long time so that everyone can get to enjoy it.
The play was well done. I wen to see it with my nephews (teenager and young adult) and we enjoyed it very much. They want to see it again.
As an avid Tupac fan, I was pleasantly surprised. Tupac was and remains one of the most provocative and relevant voices in the hip hop culture that this undertaking of Holler if Ya Hear Me was no small feat! The actors delivered such passion and vulnerability in their performance, that I felt raptured. Kudos to the team for bringing the essence of Tupac and keeping him relevant.
