    Go see Hedda Gabler!

by TORGIE on 7/29/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

Overall a very well done production. I was definitely more positive than my response to Romeo and Juliet. The latter takes a pretty stirring presentation to turn me on but thankfully I was turned on by Hedda. In particular, I thought the portrayal of her emotional and mental collapse leading up to the suicide was spectacular and neatly capped off a very good performance by the cast in general. I hope that this goes a fair way in putting Intiman back in the running as they have done many good things in the long time that we have observed them.

    Hedda Gabler Mixed

by Anonymous on 7/28/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

Marya Sea Kominsky (I apologize in advance for Sp), is absolutely brilliant in the title role of a woman besieged with uncertaincies and at odds with her rudderless life. The staging is clever. Unfortunately, it has little else to recommend it.

    Fantastic

by LMRE on 7/25/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

Four gals spent the weekend in Seattle and saw 3 plays in two days. Amazing was the production of Hedda Gabler. From the director and the little details to the stars of the play this was a world class show! Marya Kaminski "owned" the role of Hedda! Every line, every gesture was spot on! It's thrilling to see theater like one experienced watching Hedda Gabler. One of the gals in our group said this production of Hedda Gabler was far superior to the one she saw recently in London. Way to go Intiman!! The costumes and staging for all three plays were great.

    Hedda gabler

by Oakharbor on 7/24/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

This play was excellent, Hedda was terrific. She was never out of character, her body language was superb. It was suspenseful and emotionally difficult to see the story evolve.

    Hedda Gabler Not For Everyone

by seamike on 7/24/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

I'm never sure whether a plodding production is due to the script (this was published in 1890), the directing, or a combination of both, but this one made it tough to keep the eyelids open at times. The plot has some interesting twists and turns, but overall is fairly pedestrian. The actors did the best they could with what they had to work with. The last scene where Hedda goes around the bend seemed to go on a bit long, and over dramatic (I assume that's direction). My recommendation to see Hedda would be with the caveat that you may not find it terribly engaging.

We really enjoyed this classic which we''d heard about for years, but had never seen a performace. Actors were excellent. We would have liked more background on authorship and reaction to the inaugural performances of the play. We thoought the choreography at the conclusion was a bit much -- we'd liked to have seen the original ending.

    Anxiety Attack

    by bluedragon2 on 7/20/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

We live in an age of uncertainty. One hundred and twenty years ago Ibsen wrote a truly modern play for the 21st century. This production dealt with Hedda unsympathetically. Whatever her upbringing it failed to give her a soul. When she destroyed the only person she thought she cared for she had used up her ability to cope with life and she shot herself.Judge Brack's last line: "....people don't do things like that!" is naive. Of course they do when you are the Hedda Gabler as interpreted in this staging. In other productions I have seen Hedda has been less calculating, warmer, more naive about life, even childlike in some ways. Things seemed to happen through thoughtlessness and inexperience. The critical act of giving the pistol to Eliot was almost a whim, not coldly calculating. When the crisis came she had no emotional reserve to go on living. In an interpretation like that, Judge Brack's words were accurate.

    Hedda Gabbler at the Intiman

by Anonymous on 7/19/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

Great to be back at the Intiman Theatre. Acting was fine except for quite a few fluffed lines. It was early in the run. Some bits were over the top as in Thea's whining anxiety and the last few minutes of Hedda's turmoil leading to her suicide. Got bored about half way into that final scene, so it could have been a shorter version of the choreographed climax, in my opinion. In fact Hedda seemed particularly cold, cruel and crazy so I just wanted her to get it over with. Looking forward to the rest of the festival.

    Hedda Gabler

I've seen this play several times. This is the best rendition I've seen to date. The actors were all great. It was very well directed and coreographed. The theatre was perfect for this play as the audience was very intimate actors. You felt you were part of the play.

troubled adaption of a long play

by bachache on 7/16/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

The diction of the actors (or the aucoustics of the stage) was poor - hearing the lines was difficult - maybe you need to sit up close - we were center half-way up and couln't hear the dialogue. We saw Romeo and Juliet from the same seats and the aucoustics were fine. The cuts were too significant and the transition into contemporary costumes and sets did not serve the play well. Hedda's and the Judge's characters lacked authenticity. Ibsen is very nuanced and too many "short cuts" and "contemporary interpretations" did not do too well. Perhaps it is not the right play for Intiman to do in this year's format. We hold season ticket for 3 other theaters in Seattle and we REALLY want Intiman to succeed. Please keep trying - we will suscribe again!

    A fine production.

by Anonymous on 7/16/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

I could argue with the director with the director over some of his choices, but the role of Hedda was especially well acted. As a Intiman subscriber, I was delighted to be back in that wonderful theater to see a fine production.

    Hedda Gabler

    by 2570 on 7/16/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

I regretted Intiman's choice of Hedda Gabler instead of A Doll's House since the versions I had seen had always been a psychological muddle. I was most pleasantly surprised by the accessibility of Intiman's staging. The characters were generally acted without the portentousness staging Ibsen usually engenders. Conversely, the surreal moments of chanting during scene changes and Hedda's descent into madness ending in her suicide, especially the latter, were jarring and telescoped emotions quite un-Ibsen.

    "Hedda Gabler"

by Anonymous on 7/16/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

The actress playing Hedda was very good as were the men.. Aunt Julia was more cheerful than I remember her, and Thea was too fidgety and young and annoying. The tragic ending was ruined with Hedda's grotesque moving around, and, if I remember correctly, she shoots herself offstage.

    Hedda Gabbler - Intiman's back !!

by SoRose on 7/16/12Intiman Theater at Seattle Center Playhouse - Seattle

Intiman's back with a great production of Hedda Gabbler. I have yet to see the other productions in the summer festival, but I was thrilled with the production of Hedda Gabbler. I found myself engrossed from beginning to end, and particularly enjoyed the glimpses of Hedda's growing madness given through slight hand gestures and other subtle indications. The staging framed the action well, and the costumes were intriguing (especially liked Hedda's shoes). Intiman's reputation for fine acting shines throughout this production. Timothy Piggee is one of my favorite local actors, and it was wonderful to see him on the boards at Intiman again. I am looking forward to the rest of the festival, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys great theater in an intimate setting.

The acting was very good and the play was well cast. Hedda was especially believable as she had this sly smile that made you realize she was capable of such evil. The greatest disappointment with the play was the ending. The staging of her madness was unbelievable and was a real letdown after such a fine experience. It looked like she had been attacked by bees or mosquitoes! Also, the gun is in the case; you know it, and yet you're supposed to believe it's in her hand?? Up to the last few minutes, I found the play very well done.

    Solid Interpretation of Ibsen

by QAtheaterfan on 7/10/12Playhouse/Intiman - Seattle

Knowing that we saw this play on a preview night, I expected a few rough edges, but overall Hedda Gabler was well-paced and well-performed. We were excited about having Intiman back, and we weren't disappointed. The actors put some real heart and soul into their performances and made characters who could have been dated seem timeless. The only weak spots were at the beginning and end of the play, both of which were minor but repairable. The overdone frantic pacing of young Mrs. Elvsted goes beyond establishing her anxiety and starts to annoy. The same can be said of the final moments of the play, focused on Hedda. It goes on for far too long. These are minor complaints, however, and the raw, mesmerizing performances make this a worthy theater experience. Go see it!

The actors were very good. The setting was interesting. The costumes were too modern. All in all I loved it.

Intiman theatre opened after a year of being shuttered. The actors brought a great deal of energy to the play. The character of Hedda Gabler as a conspiring housewife was very well played. The other characters performed admirably as well. The story itself is classically amusing. The last few seconds of desperation by Hedda were a bit overdone. I highly recommend the play.
