    disappointing!

by krustyluv on 12/12/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I have seen Bela in Honolulu twice. The last time, about 4 years ago, he played with the symphony for 3 songs, the rest of the show was just him, a bassist, and tabla drummer. This time, Bela played 3 songs with the symphony, and left! It was billed as 'a night with Bela Fleck'. I didn't care about the symphony, and left after he did. If I had known he would only play for 30 minutes, I would not have gone. Also, the speakers desperately need to be upgraded to 2013 standards--they sound trashy and bassy.

    Classical is better than Modern

by JaEg on 12/10/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I have heard Bela Fleck in better vehicles than this concert. I detest the disjointed clanging of pots and pans in this show which represent life in Los Angeles. The concert at the end of "August Rush" the movie, was a far more pleasing paean to urban living than this concert. I will be more discriminating in the future to avoid this type of music.....awful! I prefer classical pieces in which all of the sections of the orchestra work together and in harmony to create a magnificent whole. I can't wait for Beethoven's 9th symphony in the Christmas concert!

    Outstanding musical event

by Mauka1 on 11/20/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

The newly revived Hawaii Symphony Orchestra was at it's best on this concert with Gallway and Jang. The audience repeatedly showed its approval and enthusiasm with standing ovations. Jang played with truly professional and exciting style. It was a concert not to be missed!

A Tour de Force by James Galway and the HSO

by Rubelle on 11/20/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Brilliant selections, quality musicians, and the special guest, James Galway created an evening to cherish. The quality of all the musicians provided James Galway with a super background in which to demonstrate musical perfection. His rendition of Danny Boy was as heartfelt as any vocalist could have ever interpreted this classic. Scheherazade starring our Concert Master "Iggy" was as quality performance as one could ever expect or seek. The conductor, Joann Falletta, proved to be tops in her field and the entire orchestra gave a "bravo" performance.

Hawaii Symphony Orchestra with Sarah Chang great

by Architect05 on 10/24/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Sarah Chang and the orchestra, and conductor were excellent. I was taken aback that Sarah performed the one piece in the first half but it was worthwhile. Iggy Jang was at his best, as usual. The guest conductor was also excellent. I so enjoyed this concert. Sat in last row of the $100+ very few guests in that row.Next Row M totally filled, must be $75 seats.6 children sitting at far left with adults but doubt they paid for those seats. Many seats open in Rows G- K. Wondered why I was denied access to purchase those seats instead of Row L.

    Sarah Chang is Fantastic

by Thiago25 on 10/23/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

The HSO opened with a Candide, a fun, brilliant and energetic showcase leading up to Sarah's appearance in a gorgeous cascading dress. She played Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 beautifully and with playful innocence and suddenly the fiery flare and signature sassiness one would expect from the Korean prodigy.

They HSO put on a wonderful performance. I highly recommend hearing them. Sarah Chang play very well, but was unpleasant to watch. She acted like a pop star, swinging her bowing arm around and paced like a caged animal.

    Sarah Chang - remarkable

by LoveHerMusic on 10/23/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

The performance was exceptional of course. Live has that extra dimension compared to a CD too.

    Very mediocre

by NMMAUI on 10/22/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I found the performance to be very mediocre. I found the main performer to be the same and arrogant on top of it with her theatrics. The sound in this venue is pretty poor as well. I don't recommend it.

    July 4th Hawaii Symphony Concert

by peanuttydog on 7/6/12Waikiki Shell - Honolulu

Overall, it was a pleasant night with great concert weather out on the lawn at the Waikiki Shell. The orchestra was great; lineup of singers mediocre. Sound system at the Shell terrible, and oftentimes it was hard to hear the MC and the singers speaking. We wanted to picnic on the Shell lawn, and checked their website for any type of info regarding this--none. Emailed--no response. Their recording and website have no info. So we took a chance and was told at the door that no outside food or drinks were allowed inside. We had to consume our picnic dinner outside. Another family commented that they had to do the same because they were told they couldn't bring in their food.

    Hawaii Symphony Pops

by ShouShou on 7/6/12Waikiki Shell - Honolulu

It was a very special and beautiful concert. The music themes were excellent. The dedication to our military was particularly moving. The accoustics should have been checked for better quality, as the amplification did not always do justice to the music and the singers.

Fantastic. Jim Nabors absolutely nailed his set. Amy H and John C were spectacular. Hula was great and support for troops appropriate. Very nice evening.

    Jimmy Borges

by tweetywinner on 6/13/12Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Jimmy borges was OK, I was expecting more. (A strong voice, a big band and Sinatra's catalogue?) It didn't quite make it for me. Sorry maybe in a lounge it would sound great.. Anita Hill was great so was the symphony and Matt Catingub.
