    La Boheme was unbelievable

by angelina1813 on 10/19/16Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I've always listen to operas, but never had the pleasure of actually watching one. la Boheme was my first and I'm happy to say, that it had me in tears. Tears of sadness and tears of joy. It was amazing. The music and singers phenomenal. The story tragically awesome. All in all a fantastic time

We totally loved the show... while it wasn't exactly as spectacular as other performances.. the music was just as wonderful and cast just as talented. I would go again!

    Performers and HSO was amazing!!

by Nos0323 on 2/20/15Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Extremely well played out and HSO was perfect! I gotta admit that I loved Wagner's music for the opera more then the opera itself . Maybe I am just not used to watching operas but certain parts was a bit confusing (the ending) and some parts was a little slow/kind of boring (the wheel spinning section). Also the acoustics for the seats I was in was decent but not the greatest, and as an audiophile who is picky with sound it made it hard for me to focus on everything. **Seats: Since that silly box has a character limit.... View was GREAT, you could see everything and the performer's voices reached me very well. But HSO's sounds were not the greatest due to the acoustics of the spot. I am thinking that it is because of the balcony overhang. Highs are pretty drowned out, the Mids become very prominant, and the lows get very booming in this spot. The sound becomes very leveled at the lower end compared to the high ends. But if you aren't an audiophile and/or picky as I am, you folks should be alright :) HOWEVER, despite all this, everyone and everything was amazing and great!! The actors and actresses were astounding and Hawaii Symphony Orchestra was in time and playing PERFECTLY to match with the singers' voice volumes!! The acoustics of my seats wont knock off a star from the overall rating :)

    Flying Dutchman Lands in Honolulu!

by coffeegrounds on 2/18/15Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Just when I thought the Hawaii Opera Theater couldn't do any better than last year's I Pagliacci / Carmina Burana (I am still humming O Fortuna), they surprised the audience with high drama by Wagner! The principals, chorus, dancers and rest of the cast and crew were astounding and the audience showed their appreciation with a resounding 'standing ovation' at the end. The maestro and orchestra did their job admirably and we left feeling energized and fully sated with this company's presentation. The sets, costumes and lighting added credence to the dramatic staging. Bravo Hawaii Opera Theater!!

    madam butterfly was interesting

by robbiek10 on 10/13/14Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

It was interesting for a first timer. Didn't expect to be reading subtitles. Next time I would sit above level. Hard to read then watch the show. Also the ending was not what I expected. Was puzzled if I had to applause or was there something else that will continue the play.

    The Mikado

by Pahiki on 6/19/14Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

This version of The Mikado is delightful with the colorful costumes, funny references to Hawai'i things, fast paced story line, excellent comedy. The actors and musicians including the singers were always right on the beat with Gilbert and Sullivan humor.

    Pagliacci/Carmina Burana a no go

by Anonymous on 4/6/14Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Went early but unable find parking anywhere at all---venue was completely oversold and no overflow parking available, no valet parking offered. Traffic was in major gridlock. Apparently an event at the arena was full as parking lot was closed more than an hour before showtime. Could not find parking even by the intermission mark so forced to go home. Would love to be able to rate the performance, but since our tickets were for the last showing I am cheated out of the experience.

    Turnadot was slow

by Disappointedaboutit on 10/16/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I was disappointed in this opera. I didn't like the voice of the main female character and there was very little movement by the actors on stage. At one point there were around 50 people on the stage for 30 minutes just standing or sitting there singing. I thought it was a great story and was very interested in seeing it, but I felt that the opera itself was slow and boring - they could have done so much more with it!

    Tosca @ HOT!

by coffeegrounds on 4/30/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

our seats were great! the cast and crew did a wonderful job bringing Tosca to the stage for Hawaii! You must have great strength and stamina to sing Puccini, and this cast did not disappoint! The principals were amazing as were the choir and rest of the cast. My favorite? Scarpia - always the bad guy! Michael Chioldi got under his skin and brought him to life! BRAVO!

Dialoges of the Carmelites was okay

by FirstOpera on 2/20/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

This was our first opera so I have no other opera to compare it to. My friend said he liked the ballet better. But for initial thoughts, I loved the live orchestra but at times the music was louder than singers. However, they did have captions above the stage. It was just irritating at times trying to read the caption quickly and then try to see the action on stage. I will go to another opera maybe one with more drama, comedy, etc. I was not on the edge of my seat with this one. I would not recommend this to someone as their first opera.

by Tavman on 2/20/13Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

I might be a little biased since my son is a supernumerary at this Opera but here is my take the music and singing was great. My sons and I have performed in a few operas and we know good music when we hear it performed!!!

    "Batman"

by DanHonolulu on 10/16/12Neal S Blaisdell Concert Hall - Honolulu

Great afternoon entertainment. Honolulu should have many more performances of the fine art. It is kind of scarce with the classic culture here on the island.
