It was a wonderful memory of a childhood story that was full of suspicion and then ended like all fairy tales should..Thanks for the great musical and the wonderul persons who took part in it.. Moving to the valley soon so that I can attend more of these wonderful adventures.

    Charming children, evil witch:excitement abounds

by lbuech on 11/9/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

Hansel and Gretel is an odd, but charming (and scary) opera. The singing was beautiful, the staging was amazing and there were many chills among the laughs (or laughs among the chills!).

Hansel and Gretel was funny and wonderful

by Gommycakes on 11/9/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

This is a must see performance even if you have never been to an opera. The reader board is easy to follow, so you never miss a word. It was hard to believe that Hansel and Gretel were not children, because they walked and moved like children. The witch was a man who walked and moved like an old lady. We laughed, our ears enjoyed the beautiful music and it was a fun time. All in all, this was a 5 Star performance! Operas are very enjoyable!

    casting amazing,

by MomType on 11/8/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

Hansel -- you must have had brothers to know how to move that way. Fabulous. Gretel -- you amazed. Every movement convinced me I was watching a girl. And your voice! Oh my, Heaven. The other roles were performed perfectly. Thank you all. Loved the sets -- must say the bloody hangings between scenes that attempted to heighten the scare-factor were distracting and didn't feel of a piece with the production. To me they were fad-ish and off-putting while the rest was timeless. Plus, during the overtures it was bizarre to hear Humperdinck's cheerful pieces played against the bloody backdrops.

    Amazing Preformance!

by elyseleighann on 11/7/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

It wasn't scary really Amazing voices. A little disappointing that Hansel is an actress. However the man that played the witch was perfect! Amazing voices and very entertaining. The orchestra was fantastic. It's 2.25 hours long but feels very short.

The music was incredible, the singing was great, and, for those of you who don't like to read during the performance, it was in English.

    First trip to the opera

    by mb35 on 11/7/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

What a wonderful experience--I enjoyed every moment of this production. Since it was sung in english, I was able to focus on the performers instead of the board above providing the dialogue. The witch was hilarious, the sets were clever, and the dream sequence amazing. I will be back to Portland Opera again.
