    OFF THE HOOK

    by 1FINE1 on 6/27/11Hampton Coliseum - Hampton

I used to attend the Festival in the 80's up until the last three years. Let me tell you, this one was by far the BEST of the last three years. Every act was unbelievable and had the audience captured. Boney James was pure perfection. Boyz II Men were unbelievable. They still have it going on. Chaka Khan's voice seemed just as vibrant as when she first started out back in the day with Rufus, and Anthony Hamilton was amazing. I did not know he was going to give such a great performance. I enjoyed the show so much I could not get to sleep when I got back to the hotel.

    Kem was a Perfect 10!

by SuttonsGirl on 6/27/11Hampton Coliseum - Hampton

I enjoyed most of the festival. I was dispointed however in the acoustics for some of the artists. I felt Chrisette Michelle should not have had to shout over the music. Her voice could not really be appreciated. Once Kem came on after her, that was verified for me. I don't know if different artists have their own personal crew to adjust the sound or if the Coliseum hires a crew to do so for all the artists. If it is the Coliseum's responsibility than shame on them. I also felt the same about Charlie Wilson and Franky Beverly. That was the first time I had ever seen Franky Beverly, and I recognize he has some true die-hard fans. His drum section drowned out the keyboards which I think is a large part of his sound. I recognize the voice is not there anymore; but so many of us are famliar with his sound that had the music been right it would have been an asset rather him trying to sing above the noise. I think Charlie Wlson did a smart thing by having a singer parrot him (for a lack of better words, I am not a music critic). He was able to deliver and not have to strain. I would recommend the same for Franky Beverly if he is going to continue to sing. He should be, and I am sure he is, very thankful for his fans. They helped to carry the show. Overall, I enjoyed the festival and think it is a good price, and venue. I am planning on making this possibly a yearly thing. I think Stephanie Mills was wonderful, although like Franky nothing new. However, she is an excellent artist and performer.

Johanthan Butler and the rest of his team was great. KEM was really good I wanted him to stay on. After KEM I was ready to go home. Then Charlie Wilson came out and he rocked the house. That was my first time seeing Charlie I would go see him again. If you missed the show you missed a good one.

    Jazz Fest was Awesome!

by hjfultrafan on 6/27/11Hampton Coliseum - Hampton

The festival was very good with a good mix of entertainers. It was well organized and didn't take long to go from one set to the next. All of the performers were very good. The only drawback is due to limited time the performers should concentrate on singing their most popular hits and not waste their time with unpopular or new material which fans are not familiar with. I certainly understand singing one or two unfamiliar tunes especially if they are trying to promote new material, but not at the expense of classic songs which they are known for.

    charlie wilson spectacular

by wanjon on 6/27/11hampton Coliseum - Hampton

I have been attending the jazz fest for the last 15 years and this was best show yet. Charlie Wilson was amazing. You would never believe a 58 year old could move and have as much stamina as he does. Great job and looking forward to seeing such a performance again.
