About

HAMILTON LEITHAUSER IN CONCERT:

Hamilton Leithauser rose to indie rock stardom in the '00s as frontman for The Walkmen, but lately it's his ambitious solo efforts that are earning him praise. Leithauser's reedy, powerful voice remained front and center on his 2014 solo debut Black Hours, giving fans of The Walkmen plenty to love as he explored a wildly diverse range of retro genres over the record's 14 tracks. From the Sinatra-esque croon of "5 AM" to the Bob Dylan-inspired vocals of "Alexandra", Leithauser effectively evokes his forebears while never resorting to imitation. A seasoned performer who has graced the stages of some of the world's biggest festivals, Leithauser has ticket buyers eagerly awaiting his upcoming tour dates with Spoon and Broken Bells.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Hamilton Leithauser grew up in Washington, D.C., and in 2000 he formed The Walkmen with several other D.C.-area musicians. The band relocated to New York City, quickly becoming a staple of the city's music scene with their raw post-punk sound and Leithauser's unique vocals. Critically and commercially successful albums like Bows + Arrows (2004) and Lisbon (2010) established the band as one of the decade's leading indie acts, resulting in top billing at festivals like Lollapalooza and Reading and Leeds. After the band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2013, Leithauser made his solo debut with 2014's Black Hours. The album's retro-meets-modern sound and upbeat singles like "Alexandra" proved popular with critics and fans alike, drawing Leithauser out for a highly anticipated string of shows on tour.

    Hamilton Leithauser Is Spectacular Live

by Spkheller on 4/28/15Bowery Ballroom - New York

Seeing Hamilton Leithauser live is like being caressed by an angel, a really cool angel who takes you to an awesome party but makes you feel like you're a part of it. As a dedicated Walkmen fan, I was still excited to see Hamilton solo and I wasn't disappointed. With a voice like that, he could seriously just turn away from the audience like Sia and sing for hours straight in the dark and I would be happier than if he also added a pyrotechnic light show. This is not to say I like pyrotechnics, rather, I'm glad he doesn't employ them. Because the real fire happens every time he opens his mouth. Go see/hear him. He is amazing.

    Terrific set

by WhatAPleasure on 12/5/14Egyptian Ballroom - Indianapolis

I've been a Walkmen fan for years and the only silver lining to their break-up has been the strength of some of the off-shoot projects that have been released since. I saw Hamilton Leithauser open for Spoon, with Paul Maroon of the Walkmen on lead guitar. It was a great set that ran through most of his album along with a Sinatra cover and some b-sides I hadn't heard before (the beautiful Utrecht and stunning I'll Never Love Again). I'd seen the Walkmen a couple times in concert before and somehow after years of shout-singing, Leithauser's voice has really emerged with quite a range that really held up in concert, even when it was really being pushed to the limit. I will definitely see him again when he's on tour.

    Way too short

by Redactinator on 7/11/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

I am a big fan of Hamilton Leithauser, and his voice is truly impressive, but the set list was far too short. From walking onto the stage to the last note of the encore was about approximately 45 minutes. When walking back out to perform the encore he even stated to the audience "we really don't know that many songs". I love the new album, and hope they learn/write more songs soon. In the meantime, I would not recommend spending the money to see them live.
