I've seen probably 50 shows a year for over 40 years. I've seen Gypsy countless times, with everybody. Lansbury's London performance in the early 70's has long been my benchmark against which all other performances, of anything, were judged. Until now.
Sally Mayes is the most amazing, moving, FIERCE Mama Rose I've ever seen, and her Rose's Turn ought to be preserved for posterity. The rest of the cast is equally strong, Michael Marotta reminded me a great deal of Jack Klugman in the original cast, and Samantha Bruce was stunning as Louise. Everyone else, kids to character actors, were fine. Pretty clearly, everyone rose to the challenge of "You'll be swell, you'll be great."
That this is a tiny regional production makes it all the more remarkable. There were some minor technical issues mostly involving malfunctioning amplification equipment, but nothing serious enough to detract from being able to hear, or the overall enjoyment of the performances.
This was the first time ever I have made the long trip to NYC (currently from SoCal, though soon to be "only" 4 hrs away) for a regional (as opposed to Broadway, or even off-Broadway) production. It was totally worth the trip. Just go.
