About

Featuring a blend of acoustic instruments, rural soundscapes, and wistful vocals, Great Lake Swimmers are a critically acclaimed indie-folk group led by Tony Dekker. Based in Southern Ontario, the group emerged in the early 2000s with a succession of heavily atmospheric albums recorded in old silos and rural country churches. The music developed in that pastoral warmth, performed and recorded in acoustically resonant and
historical locales with a revolving cast of personnel. They are renowned for homespun folk and lush, intimate Americana in their live shows.
Their newest album, Caught Light, out Oct 10, 2025, is their most immediate and instinctive album to date. Recorded in just five days in Ontario’s Ganaraska Forest with producer Darcy Yates (Bahamas) and engineer Jimmy Bowskill (Blue Rodeo), it draws warmth from early ’70s folk-pop while embracing a new spontaneity and directness in Dekker’s songwriting. Great Lake Swimmers have been shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and nominated twice for Canada’s Juno Awards, with the CBC calling them “a national treasure.”

  • Great band, poor timing

by kseniya108 on 5/7/15Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 3 out of 5

The show was scheduled for 8 pm but the band didn't get on stage until 10:10 pm which was a little disappointing considering that it was a Monday night. Besides that, the band was wonderful, really got the crowd engaged and having fun in no time.

It is wonderful to see them and hear them in such an intimate setting like the Ann Arbor Ark. The Pines were great, too. Their new songs were great, too. I'll get the CD when it comes out.

  • Great Lakes Swimmers.... Incredible!

    by TF919081 on 6/12/10The Ark - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Tony Dekker's voice and music are unforgettable! A must see as his studio music comes across quite nicely on stage, especially at a smaller venue like The Ark. I really enjoyed how his song showcase the talents of backup singer, Miranda, on the violin and Erik's banjo playing. To steal a line from Tony......"thank you singer."

  • Truly an unforgettable performance!

This was my first time seeing Great Lake Swimmers live and also my first time visiting The Ark. The Concert exceeded all my expectations. The band was fantastic, they played with such emotion and heart. They were so humble when I met them after the show, what a great group of people. Also venue itself was such a perfect setting, the acoustics of the place were phenomenal and the staff was lovely. I can't wait to see GLS again & visit The Ark!
