GRACE JONES IN CONCERT:

When it comes to multi-hyphenate icons, legendary Jamaican performer Grace Jones stands alone. Singer, actress, model, fashion plate, Bond girl – Jones has done it all with a singular artistic vision that continues to mesmerize and enthrall as she enters her fifth decade as a performer. From her days as an androgynous disco diva to her reign as queen of the new wave and beyond, Jones has remained at the vanguard of music and fashion trends, collaborating with the best producers and designers from both fields to build a legacy of cutting-edge music and visual style that is unquestionably her own. At her incredible live performances Jones is known for stalking the stage with her signature scowl and striking severe poses in outré stagewear while she coos and purrs in her sultry contralto voice over rhythmically seductive classics like "Pull Up to the Bumper" and "I've Seen That Face Before." From the elaborate stage design to the multiple costume changes, Jones pulls out all the stops, delivering a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience that will make even the most casual fan a "Slave to the Rhythm."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Grace Jones was born and raised in Spanish Town, Jamaica before moving to New York with her family at age 13. She was picked on in high school for her skinny frame, but at age 18 she signed a modeling contract with Wilhelmina and moved to Paris. After rising to the top of the city's fashion scene and appearing on the covers of Vogue and Elle, she signed to Island Records and released 1977's Portfolio, a collection of disco covers of Broadway classics like "Send in the Clowns" and "Tomorrow." Jones released two more disco albums in the late '70s, but by the early '80s she had moved on to the sounds of reggae and new wave. Her 1981 album Nightclubbing was a global success, cracking the Top 10 in five countries thanks to hits like "I've Seen That Face Before" and "Pull Up to the Bumper." In 1982 she released A One Man Show, a long-form music video collaboration with director Jean-Paul Goude that introduced her striking visual style to the MTV generation and earned her a Grammy nomination. Mainstream acting gigs followed, including a role opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1984 film Conan the Destroyer and a coveted Bond girl role in 1985's A View to Kill. Her chart success continued in the late '80s with the albums Slave to the Rhythm and Island Life, but by the '90s Jones was focused primarily on acting. She revived her music career after a nearly 20-year studio hiatus in 2008 with Hurricane, an acclaimed return to form produced by Ivor Guest. Since then Jones has continued to do what she does best: slay in concert with epic performances that live up to her outsized reputation.

    AMAZING GRACE rocks the BOWL

by RezaAgaKhan on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

At 61, legendary GRACE is at the top of her game. This concert was mindblowing! My only complaint was that the Bowl shut the show early due to curfew regulations. The costumes were out of this world and Grace's voice was in top shape. A once in a lifetime show! Love it all.

    Grace Jones is timeless

by Britabroad on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Dengue Fever, Of Montreal and Grace Jones played I did not enjoy Dengue Fever at all and they seemed to be on forever. I spent most of the time wondering what language they were singing in I think it was Thai. Of Montreal were disco rock with some silly theatricals going on. Two and a half hours later Grace came on she was great she did far too much new material and not much of the stuff that made her so famous. Her costumes were flawless. Overall she was very entertaining and warm was worth the trip next time I would go later to miss the other bands.

    Grace Jones!!!!!

by LisaMinnelli on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

What can I say? Grace Jones is something else. Sixty-two years old and still baring it all. Not just anyone can look and sound as good as she did. Watching her preform was an experience I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life.

    Grace Jones was impressive!

by diulay on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Grace Jones took the stage and seemingly blew her 2 preceding acts out of the water. I arrived to watch Of Montreal, and as good as they were, I expected more. I decided to stick around though and see this infamous Grace Jones and was astonished by the number of people who were in attendance, young and old alike. She definitely put on an entertaining show with wild costumes and great music, although I'm sure the energy that the captivated audience exuded was partially to credit!

    she's mellowed

by lbfan on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

After a long absence the amazing woman is back with some good tunes and great looks. She's not as abusive to the audience as she used to be, which is nice, and there a lot of stage exits for costume changes. But her voice is strong, costumes amazing and her presence as powerful as ever. Wish the Bowl hadn't pulled the plug on her (curfew in the Hollywood Hills you know).

Who Knew Grace Still Had It?!?!?!

by ofMontrealfan on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

It was amazing how much Grace Jones can still rock the world. I found out before the show that she is now 61 years old so my expectations were adjusted accordigly, but WOW - old divas never die, they just get more fans! I had gone to see the band of Montreal, and they were wonderful. I will always have that opinion. They had less theatrics then in previous shows, but Kevin and company were in great form. I just wish he would have come out in the gold hot pants. Alas, the only ass on stage last night belonged to the inimitable Ms. Jones. It was way cooler then I thought it would be, and I may even go out and buy a Grace Jones CD!

    Amazing Grace

    by Ci490 on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

She's an icon. She's amazing. Unexpectedly warm and playful with her chats with the audience during costume changes (there were 7). She's 62 and still increadible and commanding.

Grace Jones & Of Montreal Impress at the Bowl

by nbrownlaw on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Grace Jones showed why her influence persists without much of an album catalog or any recent tour. The visuals were dazzling, and her deep, rich voice still commands the stage and her material. The show's pacing was sometimes uneven, as Jones had a completely different (and magnificent!) cosume for each song, and the changes often took time; it was endearing that she used these backstage breaks to banter with the audience while she was offstage, however. Of Montreal's set was also visually stunning, and musically strong, showcasing their intricate harmonies and catchy melodies. I was surprised that they were able to faithfully execute studio songs that are densely produced in a live setting. Really, the only limit to the enjoyment is the Bowl's strict enforcement of it's 10:00 PM curfew, as both acts left the audience wanting more. Dengue Fever opened with a spirited set of songs with an Asian-Middle Eastern fusion feel.

Grace Jones has still got it

    by L2theP on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I had the pleasure of seeing Grace Jones at the Hollywood Bowl last night. Even after 20+ years this girl has still got it. The music was hot but the outfits and presentation are what made the show. Grace is a true entertainer and knows how to create a visual, as well as musical experience.

The one and only GRACE Jones

by caru on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Grace Jones forces us to "see outside the box". She has been an idol for so many black women who "dare to be different", with her amazing beauty and sophisticated sexuality. The costume changes after every song, while chatting with us from behind stage with her deep, mysterious, sexy voice kept you engaged with her the entire time.

    A Rare Treat

by MissZ on 7/27/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Grace Jones was AWESOME. I have waited at least 15 years to see her live. Her combination of art, music and showmanship makes her one of the last remaining great female performers. This was 1 of only 2 shows in the US for this small tour. Her voice was smooth and visuals were exciting! I wish it had gone longer but the 10:30 pm noise curfew makes for an early show. I really like the Hollywood Bowl especially since its outside, doesn't really have a bad seat, has 4 projection screens, the fact you can bring your own food and drinks and if you don't the store on site sells bottled drinks. My only complaint with the Bowl is that because people bring their own booze(and lots of it!) there is a lot of drinking and socializing DURING the show. There were two drunk girls behind us who talked loudly NON-STOP through the whole concert. It was such a rare treat to see Grace Jones I was disappointed that the crowd were more into partying and talking to each other than LISTENING to the music. I think many people went for the "enviornment" and cheap tickets.
