About

Gov’t Mule stormed the jam band scene in 1994 with a bluesy blend of Southern rock. Guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody originally formed the band as a side project of the Allman Brothers Band. Gov’t Mule's music is defined by its noodling blues-rock jams and Parliament-funk freak-outs. The band’s concerts and tours bring to mind legendary 1960s acts like Cream, Grateful Dead, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Little Feat. Gov’t Mule have been a staple on the summer festival scene since their inception, entertaining college kids and older hippies alike. The mid-1990s represented the height of the jam band circuit, but while other contemporary bands faded away, Gov’t Mule kept on trucking. For the past two decades, Gov’t Mule has been entertaining ticket buyers with good old-fashioned Southern rock and roll, with songs and set lists that seem to rise, swell and go on for hours. Today, Gov’t Mule are one of the last pillars of the jam band scene.

In 2013, Gov’t Mule released the double-album, Shout!, their first LP in four years. Gov’t Mule is always trying to do new things and push the creative envelope, and Shout!'s first disc is entirely new material, while the second disc is comprised of cover versions of the first album's tracks, featuring collaborations with high-profile musicians like Elvis Costello, Ben Harper, Dave Matthews and Steve Winwood. Gov’t Mule has released nine studio albums and several live discs. The band scored its highest chart release with 2006's High & Mighty, which peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Indie Chart. Gov’t Mule is currently in the midst of the Time to Shout Tour, and fans know the band will be jamming long into 2014 and beyond.

Gov't Mule - Lousy Halloween Trick!

by RodTheMod on 11/1/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

What a joke! These fools played The Who covers for the WHOLE night. What the hell were you thinking, Warren? Why would I pay good money to hear The Who for the entire night. Yeah, no one gave you an ovation for an encore because no one wanted to hear more of that crap. In fact, you guys packed up, turned on the lights, and got out of there right after the last note. Hopefully you felt some shame for your performance or lack thereof. I saw these guys a couple times in LA and was impressed. What the hell happened? That was probably one of the worst concerts I've ever attended. I was embarrassed to expose my friends to that sorry excuse for a show.

    Gov't Who

by Anonymous on 11/1/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Gov't Mule always put on a great show, but their Halloween shows are extra special. They did not disappoint this year, and continued their Halloween tradition of covering a classic band by playing The Who's "Who's Next" in it's entirety for the first set. The second set was a perfect mix of old and new Mule songs. Fantastic sound, a beautiful venue; this concert couldn't have been better.

Gov't Mule Halloween at the Fox in Oakland

by monteserenoguy on 11/1/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

How can a band be so damn good? Starting the show with 'Who's Next' and using the Who logo was brilliant. The Mule plays the type of music that works its way in to your heart...... because it is heart felt.... very satisfying Great Halloween show

    Another great Mule show!

by Mulatto on 11/1/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

My 8th Mule show, 12th Warren Haynes gig, and every one has been well worth the cost. You never know what to expect from these guys. My first Mule show was their 1000th show, and The Dead (with Warren) played the second set! For this Halloween show, Gov't Mule put on their 'musical costumes' and gave us an incredible set of songs by The Who. Baba O' Reilly, Bargain, Getting in Tune, Behind Blue Eyes, Won't Get Fooled Again... need I say more. Go see this band, people... you won't regret it.

    Gov't Mule is who???

    by andrew123 on 11/1/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Gov't Mule has soooo many awesome tunes! And they do great covers...but an entire set of Who covers was just too much. Even then, they were played just "ok", musically and theatrically (that is, no Townsend- nor Daltrey-esque stage antics). Finally, for much of the show, the bass and drums overwhelmed the guitars. I'm a big fan of Gov't Mule (wouldn't have taken the time to write this otherwise) and well, sometimes the shows just don't pan out. I hope for the sake of fans elsewhere that Mule ditches the opening Who set.

    Mule review

by Rukind2 on 11/1/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Would have enjoyed Warren in a more intimate setting, the sound was clearly set for a larger venue and Warrens vocals seemed very muffled throughout the show, best seats in the house were most likely balcony and in the rear or the venue where the sound was absorbed. But all in all who can complain about seeing Warren Haynes, hottest voice in jamband!

As always Gov't Mule was very good. Howeve it seemed as if the show was cut short and ended abruptly. It was if Mule was asked to stop. That was disappointing

    Epic and Inspiring

by HMBGovtMuleFan on 11/1/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Saturday nights show was the best Govt Mule performance I have seen to date. I have attended every GM show since 2005. The Fox is an incredible place to have a musical party. Add the costumes, great fans, and an amazing band that just gets better and better. The band was excited Sat night. The challenge of perfoming a set of Who songs lifted their focus and then they then held that focus in an amazing and upbeat set.

    "Muleoween in Oakland"

by driverdan on 11/1/10Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Fabulous venue for a Mule show. Nothing better than a band that doesn't care how long they play. 3 hours is standard for Govt Mule and they played great. I had 2nd row balcony seats and had a perfect view of Warren and the band. Opened the show with an hour long set of WHO songs. What a nice change. Then the real show started. Who needs an opening act when the headliner can play covers from any band as well as the original band themselves. I've been to many Mule shows and what I like is that they are never the same. Only thing I missed was a special guest performer, but I'll get over it. Loved the customes of the crowd. Much older crowd than usual but no complaints from this old geezer. Had a great time and can't wait for the next time Mule is back in town. Thanks and have a Rockin day.

    Mule Rocks My World Again!

by SlackjawJez on 10/31/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Great show as always, my hubby was disappointed not to hear his favorites, but they are ALL my favorites so no complaints from me there. I do feel like we lost a few songs from the first set due to the late start and they didnt make up all that time so I know we lost a goodie or two which is a bummer! I enjoyed the coversongs but was hoping for a real gem, although Gold Dust Woman was a lovely surprise!

Gov't Mule at the Crystal Ballroom

by JumpMarine on 10/31/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

The Mule was great as usual, but they seemed a bit off for the first few songs. They started about a half an hour late. The crowd compared to last year was not as focused on the music and drinking/talking much more to the point it was distracting. Will I go again, oh yeah....it's the Mule! But I won't be sitting in the balcony with the drunks again.

Volume too much for indoor venue

by jcmd on 10/30/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Amps were turned up too high. Would have been much better if distortion from speakers hadn't prevented me from hearing most of the lyrics and some of the instrumental riffs.

    Old School

by pdxfan on 10/30/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

Warren rocks as hard as it gets. I think some "Dead" fans don't like the lack of true jam band sound. But for me having the focus on old school rock with some jam band layered in is just fine. The only downside to the show was the fact that there was an all ages side. I didn't know it and wound up, on that side, being rushed up by a sea of Justin Beebers. They didn't have a sense of the music all they wanted to do was rush the stage and squeal like little girls. I will not EVER make that mistake again. I really can not figure out why the Crystal Ballroom considers Gov't Mule an all ages show.

Awesome show in a killer venue!

by DrDoobie on 10/30/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland

This was the first time I have seen a show at the Crystal Ballroom, but definitely not the last! Seeing my favorite band in such a historic venue for the first time there made it even better! The set was awesome, filled with Gov't Mule classics, a tune from Warren's solo album and a couple of great cover tunes. For our show he chose Red House and ended the night with a cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'Gold Dust Woman'. I couldn't have asked for a better night!
