Get Together Festival
Since 2013, the Get Together festival — a partnership between Vancouver, British Columbia party promoters Blueprint and Live Nation — has been giving EDM fans in Western Canada good reason to bust out of hibernation mode and shake off woes of the cold Winter season on the dance floor. The inaugural edition was held at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum with a bill headlined by Dutch electro-house DJ Hardwell and British beatmakers Above & Beyond, and the event's success would spawn an annual local tradition held each Family Day weekend (the holiday observed in select Canadian provinces in mid-February), attracting such notable names as U.K. trance-master Gareth Emery, Aussie electro producer Will Sparks, and Dutch deity Armin van Buuren. In December 2014, an offshoot Get Together festival was introduced in Edmonton, Alberta, scheduled smack-dab in that traditional Boxing Week dead zone between Christmas and New Year's Eve; headlined by Russian EDM icon Zedd. The Edmonton iteration of Get Together is now an annual two-day blowout, with some 6,000 revelers taking over the Shaw Centre in the last week of December. The 2018 lineup is topped by American dancehall/pop polymath Diplo, who's coming off another banner year that saw him release the celeb-stacked ‘California' EP, a spiritual sequel of sorts to his moody 2004 album ‘Florida' that likewise showcased the DJ/producer's more introspective side (with the help of special guests like Santigold, DRAM, and Lil Yachty). His subsequent collaboration with Ellie Goulding and Swae Lee on the single "Close to Me" shows he can still drop a tropically tinged pop banger whenever the mood strikes. At Get Together, Diplo shares the bill with American bass bomber Illenium, British trap technician TroyBoi, and Australian DJ/singer/producer triple-threat Alison Wonderland, among others. And with a lineup like that, you'll probably need to stay in on New Year's Eve just to recover.
