I've loved George Winson's music for a long time and was excited to finally see him play in person. When he played his music, the concert was wonderful. Unfortunately, he also played other music that I did not recognize nor did I enjoy as much. The worst part was when he played a song on the harmonica--it actually hurt my ears! He also played a couple of songs on the guitar, which I could have done without. When he came back onstage he played another guitar song. We came to watch you play the piano, George, not the guitar!

    George Winston was awsome

by DoryM on 12/21/10Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

I really like George Winston. Hearing him in person is even better than his CD's. I really like his casual style. He played a variety of music. Very entertaining.

    Amazing Piano

by NJinTN on 12/21/10Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

Terrific event. The venue was convenient, parking was free and traffic was minimal. George Winston was as brilliant as usual. He played a good mix of his traditional piano pieces, a couple of guitar pieces and a fantastic harmonica piece. Although I love the music from his CDs, I thoroughly enjoyed the New Orleans Jazz pieces as well - especially his latest stride piece. No one else uses both the percussive and string aspect of the piano like he does. I'll be in line next time tickets go on sale!

    Uncomfortably surreal

by jtgutt on 12/21/10Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

My wife and I have enjoyed George Winston's CDs for years but have never seen him live. We did not know quite what we were getting ourselves into, so that may have been part of the problem. In his introductions to the songs, he was rather flat and uninteresting. While he was playing, he seemed like he was in an altered state and was playing some pretty psychedelic stuff. Don't get me wrong - his playing was impressive and he's got mad chops, but I thought it lacked at times in the musicality department. Several songs started off beautifully, and then he took them to a manic, confused place that we didn't care for. On a couple of songs, he stuck his hand in the piano to mute some strings, and started pounding on the muted notes - a bit strange. Overall, it came across to me as indulgent (I find that term overused, but I think it really applied here). I think it worked for many in the audience, but my wife and I didn't get it. We ended up leaving at intermission.

    Wonderful Music

    by JTS0929 on 12/21/10Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

The music was everything you would expect if you have listened to any of his cd's. His talent showed through even more live, if you can imagine that. Your ears will love the show. Entitled "The Winter Show", the song selections betray. 2 selections from his December cd and maybe one or two others that could remotely be called seasonal. So if you are looking for lots of holiday songs, forget it. A smaller item: If you like to get dressed up to see a concert, be ready because he does not. He is extremely casually dressed. This means jeans and no shoes casual. He does not try to impress you with his appearance. He does explain the pieces he is about to play which is great. He also has some quirky behavior that takes away from his amazing music. So close your eyes and you will enjoy the concert tremendously.

Great evening topped by a great musical performance by someone who could not only tickle the ivories, but pick the guitar strings quite well.

    george makes the keys sing!

by coops on 12/21/10Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

Geroge Winston is an incredible musician. And he makes beautiful music. The Genessee Theatre is beautiful and the sound good. Was nice to actually hear and understand what they were saying on stage. Would have liked to have him play more music from his CD Winter (only 2). He also played his guitar and a harmonica.

Mr. Winston is a Must See

by dawnphin on 12/21/10Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

I took my family to see George Winston, who is from eastern Montana, play at the Genesee Theatre and he exceeded my expectations as a live musician. He not only played the piano, all songs by memory, but also showed his talents as an acoustic guitar player and also harmonica! He played songs familiar to me and also songs from his current albums that were not so familiar - all amazing! I highly recommend seeing and hearing George Winston Live! His performance is one I will always remember as being a beautiful way to celebrate the holiday season. Thank you very much Mr. Winston.

    George Winston was awesome!!

    by Princess18990 on 12/21/10Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

Super wonhderful event. He is so amagingly talented. We were very disappointed, though, that he didn't have a mic in front of him. Our seats were the most expensive, but the acoustics were awful. After the intermission, we were able to move our seats to the middle balcony level, and it was much better. I understand the artist wants the "unplugged" sound, but to pay all that money, and then not be able to hear the concert was frustrating.

Great show...he is the ultimate cool talent...jeans, blue sox.. and very low key but he romps on the piano.. plays a very bluesy harmonica and a mello guitar. I would see him again tomorrow... if I could .. have been a fan for a very long time.

We became one with whatever instrument he was playing. I love watching him play and how he used the piano to get the sound he wanted.

    George Winston

by DLQ2 on 10/3/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des Moines

The George Winston concert was just excellent. My friend and I enjoyed it very much. I was disapointed that there weren't more people in attendance- and at the shortage of food items that were brought for the Food Bank of Iowa. I hope Hoyt Sherman can keep bringing talent like this to Des Moines- something for us "over 40" folks that don't appreciate Metallica or Justin Bieber.

    The Master at Work

by HoytShermanEnthusiast on 10/1/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des Moines

It's simply amazing to watch George Winson at work. His hands are a blur on the keyboard. It's hard to believe without seeing firsthand that there is only one man playing. The sounds he produces are awsome.

    Different but very good overall

by RickyW on 9/26/10Sioux Falls Orpheum Theater - Sioux Falls

Good concert that I would recommend to anyone. Although I was prepared for something more formal, this concert is anything but. Eccentric, about the sound, the way music is meant to be.

    George Winston was great!

    by Kaye12000 on 9/5/10Aladdin Theater - Portland

My daughter and I went to see Geo. Winston and were very pleased with the music choices of the evening. Some familiar pieces, some new to us, but all very good. He added variety with the guitar and harmonica which was very nice, though I would be thoroughly happy with piano only. My only concern was for the artist. I was wondering if he was not feeling well.

As expected, George Winston did not disappoint. His mastery of the piano, not to mention guitar and harmonica, is quite amazing. We can't wait to see him again.
