About

On the evening of December 1st, 1973 at The University of Delaware's Lane Hall, a guitarist, a drummer, and their rhythm guitarist set up their gear - including a borrowed PA - on the small bandstand. Though the three-piece band had only rehearsed once or twice, guitarist George Thorogood and drummer Jeff Simon had been bashing out covers of songs they loved - including 'No Particular Place To Go', 'Madison Blues' and 'One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer' - in suburban Wilmington basements since they were teens.

"George once said he wanted to start a band, and that was good enough for me," says Simon. "Besides, the gig paid $150."

A week earlier, Thorogood hadn't even owned an electric guitar. "I'd been traveling around the country as an acoustic street musician," George explains. "I was back home for my sister's wedding, and Jeff booked the gig without telling me. I went to a pawn shop downtown and bought a Gibson ES-125." Their band didn't have a name, either. "There was a piano player on a bunch of Howlin' Wolf sessions who was credited only as 'Destruction'," Thorogood remembers, "so we decided to call ourselves 'The Destroyers'."

The Lane Hall audience was wary at first. "We started playing what we knew," Simon recalls, "a lot of Elmore James, Chuck Berry and Jimmy Reed. We may have been a bit nervous, but we were having so much fun that nothing else mattered. Then it was like somebody flipped a switch. Everybody hit the dance floor all at once."

"We had the place rockin'," Thorogood says. "We must have played 'One Bourbon' three times. It may have been a bit unpolished and primitive, but we were connecting with the audience in a major way. From that very first show, Jeff and I knew we were onto something." Five decades, more than 8,000 performances, and over 15 million albums later, on any given night on any stage in the world, few bands can still rock the house like George Thorogood & Destroyers.

For Thorogood, Simon, and long-time Destroyers Bill Blough, Jim Suhler and Buddy Leach, that's only part of the reason why their Bad All Over The World - 50 Years of Rock Tour will be a celebration like no other. "People may love our records, but our live performances leave the ultimate impression," George explains. "We're all blue-collar guys; if we don't kick ass on stage every night, it's back to working at the car wash." For the past half a century - and with no signs of slowing down - they've kicked ass with their 50 Dates/50 States Tour; delivered landmark performances at Live Aid and on SNL; opened club gigs for Muddy Waters and stadiums for The Rolling Stones; and remain one of the most reliable/formidable live acts in the world, with 2022's run of nearly 100 shows in 17 countries across 3 continents including Europe and Australia - plus a top-selling U.S. summer tour with Sammy Hagar - being one of their biggest years yet.

Then there's an ongoing legacy unlike any in Rock history: By reverently reinventing obscure blues, country and R&B tracks by icons that include Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker and Hank Williams - via now-classic hits like 'Who Do You Love?', 'Boogie Chillun' and 'Move It On Over' - George & The Destroyers have kept the music of these American Masters alive for the MTV Generation and beyond. And with his own smash originals such as 'I Drink Alone', 'Gear Jammer', and the ultimate badass anthem 'Bad To The Bone', Thorogood and band have forged a one-of-a-kind career built on humor, fervor and six-string swagger delivered with equal parts fire and fun. "The dreams we had as teenagers all came true," Jeff Simon says. "We've shared stages with our music heroes. We perform for audiences all over the world. We've always stayed true to who we are. And most of all, we still love what we do."

The band also has a longstanding commitment to medical science and social justice that includes a partnership with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as well as an ongoing collaboration with Musically Fed to feed veterans, the homeless, and the food insecure nationwide. A portion of proceeds from the 50 Years of Rock Tour will also benefit The Marla Thorogood Memorial Fund For Ovarian Cancer Research in conjunction with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in memory of George's late wife who passed away in 2019. "When I was a kid, my hero was Bobby Kennedy," George says. "He said 'Some men see things as they are and ask why? I dream things that never were and ask, why not?' It was a message that spoke directly to my generation, and one that I'll always carry with me."

For Thorogood, the 50th Anniversary Tour - along with a top-streaming catalog of albums that now includes his acclaimed 2017 solo disc Party Of One, 2020's epic George Thorogood & The Destroyers Live In Boston 1982: The Complete Concert, and 2022's The Original George Thorogood - is proof that nice guys can finish first even when they're the baddest of the bad. "You can't plan to have a legacy," George explains. "Our heart and soul have been in this from day one, and I think audiences have always respected that. Maybe that's why we've never gone out of style." Or perhaps the way a gobsmacked Rolling Stone reporter first described Thorogood and band in the '70s still rings true today: "Just one guy with more moves than a burlap bag full of wolverines, a snarling vintage Gibson, and a rhythm section in pursuit of the Watts-Wyman Perfect Metronome Award. If Thorogood gave off any more energy, the government would lock him in a lead barrel and dump him off the coast of New Jersey. George Thorogood & the Destroyers play rock & roll hot enough to melt the polar icecaps and flood the world's major population centers."

But does Thorogood ever wonder if that nervous 23-year-old onstage at Lane Hall could imagine the bad-to-the-bone rock party he'd bring to the next several generations? "Rather than think about the past 50 years, I'd rather focus on our next 50 shows," George says with a laugh. "But I will admit to a warm feeling of satisfaction, maybe a bit of pride, and definitely a whole lot of gratitude." And when asked to pick a career highlight thus far, maybe one night that changed everything for George Thorogood & The Destroyers, he shakes his head, flashes a huge grin and heads off to soundcheck. "My highlight is when I step on that bandstand," Thorogood says. "The promoters invited us, the audience came to hear us, and we're ready to rock. When the rush of that ends, I'll stop. Until then, every night I play for people can be the biggest night of my life."

  • Pleasently surprised Jonny Lang/George Thorogood

by kwolf on 8/18/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 3 out of 5

I truly went to see Jonny Lang for the 4th time. He is one of my favorites. My friends and I said if we don't like what we hear and see after Jonny is done the we can always leave. We ended up stay till the end. Thorogood was pleasently surprising and we really had a good time. I don't think I would pay to see him again, from what I have heard about Thorogood all his concerts are the same, same song line up and some little jokes at each show. I really enjoy going to Meadow Brook for concerts. It is one of my favorite venues. Large enough for a good crowd and to feel apart of the show but not so big you have to fight to see or hear the entertainment.

  • Jonny Lang wasn't what I'd hoped for!

by ChristieJ on 8/18/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 2 out of 5

I had seen Jonny Lang three times before this concert, actually 4 if you count the Hendrix Experience last November. I like George Thorogood but Jonny is who I really came to see. I'm a huge fan of his, he's probably my favorite artist outside of the Beatles! What I saw on Sunday night was most disappointing. His band was not the same for some reason and I their timing was all off. The drummer's especially was and it ruined the songs. Jonny is an amazing talent but unfortunately did only 2 recognizable songs...none of his hits. And while I understand he was the opening act, I was hoping for an encore which never happened. Actually, I don't understand why he was the opening act, he has headlined before and packed the house! George Thorogood was energetic and got the house rocking but we didn't stay til the end because it was getting late and had to work the next morning. All in all, it was a disappointing evening. I hope Jonny can "Turn Around" and go back to the type of music and show that made him famous.

  • george and the destroyer was magnificent

by sparky58 on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 5 out of 5

Geogre and the destroyers put on a greaqt preformance, I enjoyed it from begining to end, the showmen ship was excellent, kept the audience well entertained

  • Just more of the same

by Rickem on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 2 out of 5

Just more of the same from George Thorogood. Same old songs. Same old show. He did play one song from his new album, "The Dirty Dozen", which only has 6 new songs and 6 recycled songs. My wife and I were surprised to see George act like he was "coming out." We never expected to see Mr. Bad to the Bone wiggle his hips and sashay around the stage. "Why the gay act George?" I was disappointed by his short set and the ridiculous 11:00 curfew at Meadowbrook. His set was only about an hour. I think Jonny Lang's set was actually longer, which was great because he really rocked.

  • George Thorogood & Johnny Lange were incredible!

by Zeus9699 on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 5 out of 5

The title says it all. We had 2nd row dead center and both acts were amazing!!

  • George Thorogood Was Awesome

by blkbelt123 on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 4 out of 5

We have never seen George Thorogood and didn't know what to expect. The opening act, Jonny Lang was exceptional. When George came on the audience exploded in applause. He played all of his hits including Bad to the Bone etc. There was audience interaction and participation. It was a wonderful show despite the extreme heat and humidity. The only problem we had was when we went to buy merchandise; the credit card machine was working when it felt like it.

  • Total grins all around

by amosjo on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 5 out of 5

George came to please. And, he did. He is so full of himself and we loved it. All old rockers should take a lesson from George; he is so fit and healthy looking. Great dance moves to boot.

  • George Thorogood at The Melody Tent

by EJO1987 on 8/17/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

This is my second time seeing George Thorogood and the Destroyers perform at the Melody Tent. I really cant wait for him to return next year..if he does. I sure do hope. This concert was blast. I have seen a few acts perform, such as Motley Crue, Metallica, Godsmack, and of course two times with good ol' Georgy. He is by far the best performer out of all these acts Ive seen. He and the band sure know how to put on a good show. Who ever opened wasnt all that exciting. I love a good acoustic set just as much as a hippie loves pot. But this guy wasn't all that great and put some people to sleep. Then the lights went out, the stage lights went purple and the crowd went insane as George and the made made their way to the stage. I can not wait to see him again and I would diff. recommand anyone, rather if your a hardcore fan of him or just someone who only knows a couple of his songs. Go to the show. You will not regret it. He sounds just like he does on CD, just louder and more fun.

  • Lonesome George

by Gustogoodwrench on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 4 out of 5

George has always great when he comes to Michigan!

  • Thorogood & Lang

by UncleBud on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 4 out of 5

Johnny Lang was good. His guitar needed to be louder and clearer (crisper). We sat on the lawn 3/4 back. I'll bet Thorogood was loud in the pavilion. Thorogood was a surprise. He and the Destroyers were excellent. And Alto Reed on sax was a real treat. I wonder if Seger was somewhere in the crowd.

  • "Well, you're welcome, your MAJESTY..."

by EvrChanginAnthem on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 2 out of 5

First of all, I went to this concert to see the opening act, Jonny Lang, who is a phenomenal blues guitarist. So, I'm probably a little bit biased. However, I know and like most of George's most popular tunes. George did a great job keeping the crowd going and I enjoyed most of his set. But, to me, there's just no comparison to Jonny Lang's rich, soulful voice OR his unbelievable guitar solos. The bottom line for me was that George didn't offer Jonny one single word of thanks. I have NEVER been to a concert where the main performer didn't in some way thank the opening act(s)! Who does he think he is? I wanted Jonny to come out at the end and say, "Well, you're welcome, your majesty!" but he'd never do that because he's a nice, Christian boy, lol. Apparently, George thinks it should just be all about him. Jonny Lang is a Grammy Award-winning artist and there is no way George Thorogood could even begin to compete with his guitar skills. He deserved a lot more respect than THAT! So, I need to clarify the overall rating I gave this concert. George & the Destroyers get two stars for putting on a good show, but not being respectful to an amazing artist who was kind enough to open for them. Jonny Lang gets four stars because, although he WAS amazing, he didn't get to reach his full potential because he only had so much time. (It won't let me type all of this into the "Opening Acts" box, so I'll just put it here:) Like I said, I went to this concert for Jonny Lang, NOT George Thorogood, so I thought Jonny was amazing as always. I wish he'd been able to do twice as many songs and I wish he'd played more of a variety. He mostly did his newer, gospel tunes. I had hoped, playing with George Thorogood, he'd have brought back some of the bluesier numbers he's so famous for. Having said that, he was still ten times better than George & the Destroyers, in my opinion.

  • Eh?

by Rapunzalle on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 2 out of 5

Music sounded good, songs well performed....but nothing unforgettable. Notable -- people left throughout their whole show beginning with the 3rd song and picking up as time went on. Plus -- no traffic jam to deal with when leaving!

  • George Thorogood rocked Nokia to it's core!

by destroya on 8/17/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Great show! GT was his usual rocking self & The Destroyers were amazing!

  • George brought his "A" game & it was outstanding

Lots of energy, showmanship and a great venue. Alto Reed (Silver Bullet Band) filled in on sax and fit well.

  • enjoyable but forgettable

by GSDgal on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 3 out of 5

First time to Meadow Brook, nice facility, not a bad seat in the place. The opening act "Jonny Lang" was amazing....UNFORGETTABLE! George was entertaining and his band was tight, but boring after Jonnys performance.

  • Jonny Lang is amazing & enjoyed George, too

by tallbluesgirl on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 5 out of 5

My husband & I really looked forward to hearing Jonny Lang...What an incredible talent & range this young guy has. He puts his heart & soul into his music, like he's one w/his music. Wonderful. It was worth the price just to see him! I wish he would have played "Lie to Me", though....a favorite! George & the Destroyers were very fun. George obviously enjoys playing for the crowd & gets people going. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves last night.

  • George T and Destoyers never disappoint!

by Mannishboy on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 4 out of 5

Excellent show last night at Meadowbrook. Alto Reed was a great addition to the group and carried the sax part well! I expecially liked hearing Cocaine Blues again! I like to here a few of the older forgotten songs that sound great. Keep it up George!

  • Great RocknRoll Show

Georgie blew the roof off the Nokia Theater. It was a rock party. Also, beautiful venue.

  • Thorogood delivered!!!

by GearJammer on 8/17/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester HillsRating: 5 out of 5

George Thorogood has been a personal favorite of mine for many years and it was a real treat to finally see him in person. He has an incredible stage presence and is a real showman. Absolutely electric! The real surprise however, was Lang. although I've heard him before and even have a CD, he is an amazing live performer. Several of his jams were out of this world and I can't wait to go find a live recording.
