GEORGE BENSON IN CONCERT:

George Benson brings his gifted guitar playing and sonorous voice to every stage he graces, consistently impressing fans at his live performances with his soulful and swinging jazz sound. In concert Benson unleashes a furious flurry of melodic guitar mastery on supercharged renditions of standards like “Take Five”, “On Broadway”, and the perennial favorite “This Masquerade”. He’s also a skilled band leader, hanging back with his infectious smile as he lets the talented members of his top-notch ensemble execute moving, eloquent solos. Ticket buyers can expect a jaw-dropping display of six-string showmanship every time George Benson brings his funky and fluid fretwork on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Pittsburgh-born George Benson was a child prodigy who had already cut his first single by the age of ten. He spent the remainder of his adolescence training under organist Jack McDuff before making his debut as a bandleader with the 1964 album The New Boss Guitar of George Benson. He continued to climb the ranks of the jazz world, even appearing on the track “Paraphernalia” from Miles Davis’ 1968 album Miles in the Sky. The virtuosic Benson scored a huge crossover hit in 1976 when he pulled double-duty on vocals and guitar for “This Masquerade”, which took home the Grammy for Record of the Year. With the encouragement of Quincy Jones, Benson explored vocals during the ‘70s and ‘80s, leading to the most commercially successful period of his career. He returned to his instrumental jazz roots at the dawn of the ‘90s and toured with renowned contemporaries like Chet Atkins and Al Jarreau into the new millennium. Ten Grammys and countless breathtaking solos later, George Benson still gives audience members an unparalleled listening experience with his amazing instrumental prowess and undeniable grooves.

    Fabulous lineup!

by katco on 10/26/09Masonic Temple - Detroit

I truly enjoyed this event. Joe Sample, Lalah Hathaway and George Benson were awesome! Never have seen any of them perfom live and I was very happy I attended. I have to admit though that I was disappointed that Lalah did not perform any of her songs. It appears she was there to sing over some of Joe Sample's sets. Honestly she was the reason I decided to go but I will just have to make sure I catch her next time as the headliner. Nonetheless, the whole concert had everyone on their feet. Overall I was pleased.

    The Still Amazing George Benson

by Barryblb on 10/26/09Masonic Temple - Detroit

I've seen George Benson live on three occasions in total and each time he appears to become more amazing... so like the cliche, "Fine wine gets better with time" and the same holds true for Joe Sample whom I've enjoyed seeing live at least on five occasions. While Lalah Hathaway is a youthful performer, spiritually, she has an old soul. This was my first live experience with Lalah, and she impresses live even more so when contrasted with her studio recordings. Finally, George's and Joe's bands were extraordinary, to say the least.

Benson was amazing, and Joe Sample was superb.

by PLWashington on 10/25/09Masonic Temple - Detroit

While I expected to hear more from Joe Sample, I was impressed with his technique given he's had a stoke. He was impeccable. He played songs I liked, but the ones I loved, he didn't present. Lalah Hathaway was personable, and accomplished in her singing. George Benson gave a stupendous performance, combining the old and the new. What memories his music brought back from 30 years ago, and he still sounds good.

    George Benson

by lovegb on 10/25/09Masonic Temple - Detroit

truly enjoyed the entire show, Joe Sample was just mind blowing whom I never had the pleasure of hearing before this show, and his sound was the best. Improv 2 also opened and never heard them before, they're accoustic sound wasn't as good but I will buy their CD. Then there was George who was simply magnificent and captured the audience for sure. Couldn't had been any better, I have seen him at least 8 times prior to this show and it was great.

He well deserves the status of LEGEND. Not a moment from start to finish that I was not moved to tears and to DANCE! I hope to see him again and again! Love you George!

Prior to last night, my wife and I only had the privilege of seeing George Benson in concert on one occaision in New Haven, CT in 1986. I thought he was in his prime in 1986. I was wrong. He is in his prime in 2009! George Benson put on an extraordinary performance last night! If you have not seen him perform in recent years, you are definitely missing something.

    Take us back to school!!!

    by Cerealkiller1957 on 10/25/09Masonic Temple - Detroit

I have been to fifteen concerts in the course of the year and this concert is the best I have been to this year. It may be the best one I have ever been to. At least it is in my top three along with Sade 93 and Prince 94. It was well run from the beginning to the end, the concert started on time, all performers came on stage in a minimal time, there was very little sound distortion (the sound man was genius), we were able to understand the songs everyone sang, and the music was amazing, from Impromptu, Joe Sample to George Benson. It was the first concert this year that I have felt I got more than my moneys worth.

    Benson Still Has It

by Antro on 10/25/09Masonic Temple - Detroit

Great concert! I was a little late so I missed Impromtu but saw all of Joe Sample and Laila Hathaway. They did such a incredible job in setting the tone for George Benson. Then when George Benson came on he brought the house down. I forgot how many songs he's put out over the years. Great concert! I highly recommend a George Benson concert to any music lovers. And the Masonic Temple wasn't bad.

Benson was riveting; his story and music so rich

by SBKim on 9/13/09The GRAMMY Museum - Los Angeles

My first Grammy Museum event. I had Benson's Breezin' playing as backdrop to much of undergrad days, Boulder, CO. Wasn't prepared for the extensive interview, and Q & A forum. What a treat! Listening to Benson recount humble origins in Pittsburgh; selling newspapers for a penny, taking us through his age 7 ukelele start, first band when barely a teen, step-father hand-crafting first real guitar; much later introducing him to a pick - which he'd never seen (!) Rich stories of San Francisco influences by jazz greats - learning how Benson moved from standard Be Bop, R&B - morphed into true jazz/fusion, his Beatles' Abbey Road connection, invitation to play in Miles Davis's band, turning it down (reluctantly) because manager said he had enough 'star power' of his own. Soon after, the incredible Breezin' released, skyrocketed. Early vivid memories of Coltrane, Parker, Adderly, Peterson were delightful; Benson's first signing with Warner, cashing his check, immediately stuffing cash in his pocket, and manager's - hilarious. They were flush - a first. So many rich, often funny, anecdotes. Truly a trip down jazz greats hall of fame! Exceeded my expectations, and those of my Grammy-nominated audio engineer friend, Peter Granet. Thanks to Scott Goldman et al, for an incredibly intimate up close & personal forum. Delightful meeting the unassuming Christopher Cross, who quietly sat in audience enjoying, until a shout out acknowledgment, when Benson spoke of covering Cross's wonderful "Sailing". An exceptional evening. Music was brilliant. Couldn't take my eyes off the pianist during first piece. Superb technique. Young enthusiastic drummer; hip/cool engaging bassist - all superb talents. BRAVO to all involved in this new music showcase. (including my 20 yr. vendor Amex). I'll be back - often.

    George was awesome

by jewelsign on 9/11/09The GRAMMY Museum - Los Angeles

I loved the interview held with George Benson. He was very comfortable and down to earth. He shared many of the memorable experiences he has had on his way to becoming who he is today. I was not that familiar with Mr. Benson before this event. I came because a friend wanted to see him. It turned out to be one of the best events I have attended this past year. His performance that night, as a musician was phenomenal! I have been listening to the CD we were given that night. I am hooked!

I couldn't havce asked for a better evening. Thanks to America Express and the Grammy Museum I experienced a great night of food, wine music and friends. What could be better that that. George Benson is such an engaging man with many colorful stories of his rise in the music industry to the legend he is now. And his music was fantastic, the only thing I could ask for is...more please!
