Galactic in Concert
New Orleans collective Galactic has long been a musical powerhouse in their hometown, but they’ve had just as much fun spreading their vibrant, Big Easy–inspired sound to nearly every corner of the country and beyond. The jazz-funk giants exhibit a jam-band–like charm on stage, weaving traditional and modern sounds into songs fit for lazy days in the sun and spirited nights at intimate clubs. Over the years, they’ve been regulars at New Orleans’ beloved music venue Tipitina’s, toured the US multiple times, and made frequent appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, and various other jazz and rock events around North America and Europe. When performing in New Orleans, Galactic like to invite a guest or two on stage, including fellow hometown heroes like The Neville Brothers, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Soul Rebels Brass Band. On the road, they’ve shared the stage with artists like Jack Johnson, The Roots, Counting Crows, Juvenile, B.B. King, and other notable performers in rock, rap, roots and reggae. Wherever they are, expect a whole lot of soul, sass and brass — and plenty of Mardi Gras merriment.
About Galactic
Galactic’s bold fusion of funk, R&B, jazz, rock, hip-hop and electronic music is irresistible. Drawing from the time-honored traditions of New Orleans’ brass bands, funk pioneers and blues superstars, the group formed in 1994 when childhood friends guitarist Jeff Raines and bassist Robert Mercurio joined drummer Stanton Moore, saxophonist/producer Ben Ellman, organist Rich Vogel and vocalist Theryl DeClouet. Their debut album, 1996’s Coolin’ Off, showcased Galactic’s deep love for New Orleans and its rich jazz heritage. With album number two, 1998’s Crazyhorse Mongoose, they landed on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Moving into the 21st century, Galactic began experimenting more with their sound, bringing in notable hip-hop producer Dan the Automator on 2003’s Ruckus, collaborating with alternative rap stars like Lyrics Born and Boots Riley on 2007’s From the Corner to the Block, working alongside New Orleans musicians such as Allen Toussaint and Trombone Shorty on 2010’s Ya-Ka-May, incorporating Brazilian dance beats on 2012’s Carnivale Electricos, and inviting veteran vocalists like Macy Gray and Mavis Staples to sing on 2015’s Into the Deep. Since, Galactic has continued to keep themselves — and their fans — on their toes with new sounds, new guests and new ways to keep New Orleans’ celebrated spirit alive.
They tore the roof off the place. Great set, great show.
These guys have a passion for what they do. They played 2 hrs of unforgettable jammin' music. I loved every minute of it.
galactic, along with T-bird and the breaks, was by far the best show I've seen in a while. every song reels you in; grabs your attention and doesn't let go. you can't fight the groove it puts in your being. VERY entertaining, I would (and will) recommend them to everyone!
i've seen a lotof shows if you didn't like that show you don't like music.
Galactic was awesome! They have great music, well-chosen special guests and they know how to get the crowd going.
Galactic put on a highly energetic live show at the Vic Theatre in Chicago. They were accompanied by Cyril Neville of the Meters and Neville Brothers fame on aux percussion and vocals. Cyril has an amazing voice and really works the crowd up. The guys from Galactic also played to the crowd, especially their drummer, Stanton Moore, who frequently jumped up and down on his kit, working the room. Corey Henry of the Rebirth Brass Band accompanied Galactic on Trombone. Think "Jay-Z + trombone". Just an incredibly funky, high-energy show where the entire crowd danced the entire night!
These guys are definitely funky and very original. I was not disappointed in their show. I missed them in New Orleans a few years ago and in Flagstaff and could not wait to see them. They were tight and in-your-face. The trombone player and Cyril Neville were great additions to the band. All-in-all a great show/performance.
There was a little confusion getting into the place.. Website said 9 Hardrock said 9:30.. The lines were blended for who had tickets and who did not.. The wait would be worth it.. I've seen Galactic about 6 times, and they have become one of my favorite live acts. Always a great show!!! This show was no different.. The only disappointment was when the show was over, I still wanted more!
This concert was the first I haved seen at Wasted Space. What a great intimate venue!~ Galactic was on fire! It was great to celebrate one of the band members birthdays Vegas style! My friends and I can't wait for them to visit Vegas again and hopefully see them again at Wasted Space~!
Amazing show. Sound was great. Very original. Moving music. He pulled his trumbone apart, and when they all came to the front of the stage and played their instruments, and when they had the entire crowd get low.
Galactic put on a great show... They always do! Looking forward to seeing them again.
Galactic used to be in exalted territory for me when it came to live shows; but the last several years I've been a little mixed. Although Houseman had his pros and cons, in general they haven't seemed the same since he left. Veterans who used to see them before the House joined would often get a little misty when thinking about those early days when it was just the core crew. After last night I think I finally understand. This is the first Galactic show I've seen since the first Galactic show I've seen, where I barely knew any songs (I knew two), but forgiving one or two of the new tunes which sounded suspiciously like old favorites, it was a lot like seeing Galactic for the first time...which is a good thing. If you've never seen them, or have been away for awhile, I highly suggest you see a band as it returns to its former glory.
Galactic came and conquered! From New Orleans, they brought the house down with their jazzy, soulful, funk! Special guests Cyril Neville (of Neville Brothers fame) and the trombone player from Rebirth Brass Band joined them on stage for almost the entire show.
Great show with lots of energy from the band. The opening act was okay but not really similar to Galactic but maybe that was the point. Got a little crazy when the trombone player jumped into the crowd since it was already packed and people had to push each other out of the way. Wound up leaving the stage area to see the rest of the show from the back. Great performance by all of the band.
great show, favorite venue, unbelievable musicians!
Great show. Lots of energy. Karl Denson got up and played with Galactic through most of their set. They stayed on stage untill the pageant told them they had to stop... Then they played one more song. It was a great night that couldn't have been any better. Thank you, KDTU and Galactic!
Galactic does not disappoint live!! This is the 2nd time I have seen Galactic at the Pageant and I have had a great time on both occaisons. They play exciting, danceable music but are also outstanding musicians who play with technical ability and chops. If they played in St. Louis monthly I would go see them every time. They are a must see.
The guys fom NOLA brought the heat to melt the ice in Atlanta. Great mix of old and new. Corey Henry and Cyrl Neville were awesome as guests and fit tightly into the Galactic groove. High energy from start to end. Lots of tunes from YA KA MAY including Heart of Steel, You Don't Know, Wild Man, Bacchus. Boe Money and Cineramascope were show highlights off the new CD. Boban had the place rocking and the vintage Meters tunes all contributed to a special night. The YA KA MAY tour is a must see! Props to Ben, Bobby Mac, Stanton and Richard for hanging out after the show.
Amazing show. One of those shows where you feel awkward not dancing your ass off! Funkylicious.
Another amazing show - as always. Cyril Neville was the perfect guest performer, and the band was rocking Ya Ka May!
