Future Islands are a band whose brilliance was always hiding in plain sight. One viral moment might have catapulted them to worldwide recognition, but they were just doing what they always did - pouring their heart and soul into every moment, and channelling art's great power to spread love and hope. It was, quite simply, who they are. Long, hard years on the road, and the sense of constantly traveling away from something, have shaped the band many ways, both spiritually and physically. Always leaving, never arriving, the horizon an impossible destination to be chased but never caught. Future Islands' new album As Long As You Are is out now on 4AD.
Best live show I've ever seen in my life. I'm already waiting for next years concert dates.
I was excited about seeing Future Islands because I've been a big fan of their music for many years. I was happy to hear they sold out the venue, and was looking forward to a great live show to end the week. I was slightly hesitant because I consider myself picky about live music and how it sounds, and I've seen live videos of them online and it didn't sound good at all. Not even on their late night appearances. But, I thought, "In person they will be better." Now, I love a deep, rich sound that sends goosebumps down my spine. I like to hear a drum beat that's not "tinny", crisp keyboards, deep bass lines, and a singer's voice that's clear and blends nicely with the music being played behind him/her. I've seen amazing-sounding bands like Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Rush, My Morning Jacket, Radiohead and Sigur Ros (#1 show ever). I've also seen many indie bands live, including Bon Iver, Band of Horses, The Decemberists, Death Cab — even a band called Mac Sabbath (check them out if you're a Black Sabbath fan!). ALL of those shows had amazing sound quality, so I kind of expect to hear that every time. Not the case here. I wanted to hear Sam's unique voice more clearly but I couldn't make out a single word he was singing. The keyboards were thin, and the drums didn't seem amplified to create a rich beat. Every once in a while I'd hear this random bass sound out of nowhere and it was really starting to bother me. It was just a MESS. I found myself more annoyed than anything, so I decided to leave, even before they played "Seasons" which was my favorite song. I was completely bummed and disappointed. My husband has no idea who Future Islands were, so the day after, I played "Seasons" for him in the car. I said, "I was hoping hearing them in person would be clear and crisp like this!" and he pointed out that even the recorded version sounds "thin". So now I think the whole FI experience is ruined for me. (sigh) A lot of people said they enjoyed the show, though. Maybe I am just too picky and jaded! POSITIVES: Sam was very charismatic and the setlist was great. Also, I was impressed with Zack Mexico who actually sounded really, really great! I was even able to give in-person accolades to a few of the band members who were standing next to me during FI's setlist.
They were awesome! the vibe from the stage, the musical talent they have, the sounds they put out, all amazing! will definitely go see them again if they are in the area!
Great concert, okay sound. I love Future Islands so much.
definitley one of my favorite bands to see live, if not my favorite. they will never disappoint with their performances.
To say that Future Islands was amazing is a true understatement. Everyone at the Fox theater was overjoyed and completely in the moment the entirety of their set. Sam Herring is the best frontman I've ever seen, for this band they care about the experience for everyone in the room. A true expression of art combined with the beauty of their music.
I discovered Future Islands a year or two ago and since then I've heard from others that although their album recordings are great, seeing them perform live is a whole other experience in itself. They were right! So much passion and energy on stage! The frontman Sam Herring seriously looked like he was about to cry in the middle of some songs. The whole show just made me love their music even more.
A good, solid band, sorely let down by a repertoire of tunes that all sounded pretty much the same, but, most of all, by an atrocious singer, with a poor voice and next to no vocal range. And that's without mentioning the appalling mixing, and, as always at Terminal 5, the poor acoustics and the ill mannered audience.
Amazing venue, amazing concert & amazing memories !
Future Islands continue to put on top notch performances and their shows are always great. Terminal 5 is still a very bad venue with terrible acoustics.
This show was so incredibly crowded, noone could even move! The band would have been great, but we had to stand almost to the door.
Sam Herring delivered as was expected. I was impressed with the opening acts as well. Operators and Wing Dam gave strong performances.
Fun show - the second opening Operators were really great!
Their music just constantly made me want to dance!
yes yes yes! For a performance full of heart that will leave you dancing till the last chord. If you have the fortunate chance of catch Future Islands live then jump on it!
Sam Herring owns the stage. He has a certain quality that can not be described. Powerful. William And Garrett are the perfect backdrop for Sam. This is the real deal... Raw, live music before it gets glammed up.
A band on the upswing. Maybe not their fault BUT the sound was muddled. A good part of the time the vocals were buried in the instrumental sound. Lets face it the overall sound of the band revolves around the singers' vocals and his dancing. As a result this has to be showcased.
Future Islands were great, Operators were fantastic. Overloaded PA for Future Islands set caused bad distortion of drums and vocals.
I saw Future Islands at the Monterey First City Festival and it was without a doubt the best performance out of all the bands there, the energy was high and they showed everyone how it was done, i will never forget that day because of them and i would LOVE to see them many more times, if you have a chance to see them, GO :)
If you have the chance go see Future Islands live. Amazing live with great energy.
