FRONT 242 IN CONCERT:

Belgian electro-industrial outfit Front 242 helped pioneer the early-'80s rise of electronic body music, a hard, dark synth-based genre that contrasted with the bright, confectionary sound of European synthpop. Today they remain as acerbic and compelling as ever, treating fans at their rare live appearances to career-spanning sets full of sawtooth analog synths and dystopian tracks like "U-Men" and "Headhunter". Performing with all of their core members still intact, Front 242 offers fans the rare pleasure of experiencing a piece of electronic music history at their must-see live shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Front 242 was formed in Belgium in 1981 when two existing duos that were exploring new musical technologies joined forces. After building popularity with early singles like "Principles" and "U-Men", the band released their 1983 debut album Geography, a benchmark effort regarded today as an electro-industrial classic. The band's 1984 sophomore album No Comment cemented their position as a dominant force in electronic body music, leading to a deal with Wax Trax! Records and landing them on a US tour with industrial icons Ministry. The group scored their first club hit in 1988 with "Headhunter", a futuristic cut off the album Front by Front that cracked the Top 20 of the US Dance/Club Play Songs Chart. Their success continued with 1991 LP Tyranny (For You), which appeared on the Billboard 200 and earned them a major label contract with Sony/Epic. Over the years the band has maintained its core members, releasing a string of albums throughout the '90s before several hiatuses in the '00s slowed their output. A live album released in 2008 proved that Front 242 remain a first-class live act -- a reputation they continue to live up to with their unforgettable performances on tour.

    So Incredible

by CasualHerbieFan on 10/9/17Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Best show of my life, hands down. Got there early (15 min after doors) and had to wait 2 hours for a not-bad DJ and a super lame techno guy to play their sets, but when 242 finally took the stage, I was in the 4th row and totally got blown away by an incredibly impressive set. So energetic, carefully calculated audio mix and visual supplements with an astonishingly strong performance by the crew -- dancing, hand gestures, vocals, live drumming, live keys. This was a real live show, not just a guy in front of a laptop on stage, and I loved it. LOVED it. I didn't even think to put 242 on my mental wish list b/c I didn't know they toured any more, but when I happened to see notice of the event THE DAY BEFORE while browsing listings, I had to jump on it and am so glad I did. Great show, great crowd, high energy and phenomenally engaging. I was literally entranced for a good portion of the middle of the set. Wow. Any fans of hard/dark electronic music NEED to catch a Front 242 show the next time they roll through your area.

by ATHellion on 9/24/17The Masquerade - Atlanta

They sounded exactly as I remembered and had so much energy throughout the whole show. Great setlist, great merch. I remember thinking during the show 'I'm going to give them a stellar Yelp review.'

I would have liked to have heard a few songs from Tyranny For You, and Up Evil. Plus, it is the Circling Over Land tour, that song would’ve been great to hear as well.

    Stand By The Innovators

    by Target242 on 9/23/17The Masquerade - Atlanta

I never miss a chance to see the "godfathers of Electronic Body Music" and they never disappoint! This was the second stop on their "Circling Overland 2017" mini tour. 242 has never lost their touch. They continue to play their classics like 'Headhunter,' 'Welcome to Paradise,' and 'Don't Crash' and updating others from the catalogue like 'Body To Body'. 'Funkadafi,' 'Commando,' and 'W.Y.H.I.W.Y.G.' were particularly powerful. The venue, Heaven in The Masquerade group of clubs, was clean, cool (atmosphere and temperature) and their support staff were friendly and inviting!

Front 242 REIGN as The Kings of EBM!

by freemone on 10/18/14Irving Plaza - New York

For 25 years, I've waited to see Front 242 live. It didn't matter that it was on a weeknight, six hours from my home, and I had to attend work the next day. I went and THEY CONQUERED! Simply incredible 84 minutes of jaw dropping electro industrial music, I was exhausted from the sheer energy they poured from the stage. A MUST SEE act for all dance oriented individuals!

    Disappointed

by Zera77 on 9/29/14Irving Plaza - New York

I was really looking forward to this show, but was so let down by the event. The venue was too packed and I couldn't even see the band. Some of the problem may have been that 242 only scheduled 4 dates in the US. There were people flying in from all over just to be there. In the end, I just couldn't enjoy it. For music that always makes me want to dance at clubs, I was bored by the live event and ended up leaving before the encore. The only good thing was that the opening act was Chris Connelly's new project, Cocksure. He was even gracious enough to sign autographs at his merch table.
