About

This epic musical features the words of Abraham Lincoln and music inspired by the letters of those who lived through the Civil War. Through a series of highly theatrical vignettes, we see everyday Americans courageously confront the gritty realities of a tattered nation and a war that pitted brother against brother. Lincoln’s inspirational words intermix with these stories, imagining a bloody nation once again unified. Ford’s Theatre is developing this work as part of "Ford’s 150," a series of events commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination

    A spiritually moving evening

by Brindlewood on 3/24/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Although there isn't a specific plot structure, the narrative traces three separate groups: the north, the south and slaves. Interspersed among the vibrant songs are quotes from Abraham Lincoln. The singing and acting are first rate. The script/libretto treats all sides with dignity and reverence. The en could not purchase a copy of the sound track.d is gut wrenching; leaving a tear in the eye. My only disappointment was that you

    Freedom's Song

by Anonymous on 3/24/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Beautiful and moving performance. I loved hearing the actual words of Abraham Lincoln. The topic of slavery was moving and well done. I enjoyed the pieces about the relationships from the soldier's perspective and the spouse left to manage the family/land.

expected more Civil War era songs and story

by Anonymous on 3/23/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

It was not as expected. I would have liked to have been immersed in more realistic Civil War songs and have been able to follow a story line. A runaway slave who has to leave it all and risk capture, enlists in the Union Army, and fights his former slave owner, for instance. The singing and acting were outstanding, however, and are praiseworthy. But the themes left me flat. It seemed more like music from West Side Story stuck on something from another time and place.

    Siting in History

by Abefan on 3/23/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

The play was great and the performers were top notch! Couldn't help realizing where I was and what took place there 150 years ago. Looking around the theater gave me the feeling that Lincoln was there the entire time. So thankful that we're provided the opportunity to be there for such an event.

    Freedom Song

    by Skinny7 on 3/23/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

It was moving, and brought the ladies to tears at time. We've previously seen 'The Heaven's are Hung in Black' and 'The Widow Lincoln' at Ford's, and while this show is not as powerful, it's still good and worth experiencing.

Title is VERY misleading; it's NOT Civil War tunes

by Graeber on 3/23/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

I do NOT recommend this: See Jane Horwitz' review in TWP: pseudo-EVERYTHING. Tunes forgettable (NOT Civil War-era authentic); things NOT integrated into meaningful "plot;" too much religion -- WHY any at all in a Federal historical place . . .

    Enjoyable Show

by BasketKaty on 3/22/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

I did not realize this was a musical. I very much wanted to attend a play in the theater where Lincoln was. The voices were quite good! The story took a little concentration to follow but I always managed to catch up. The ending brought tears to my eyes. My hubby was less enthralled but did enjoy it.

    A MUST IN DC!

by countycrown on 3/19/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Freedom's Song was extrordinary! Amazing voices, technically tight, poignant and riveting. The music and location combined with the incredibly inspiring words of Abraham Lincoln make this a DO NOT MISS. I am a HUGE Wildhorn fan and this cast did great justice to his work. (Also swooned a bit at one of my favorite voices from Wildhorn's Broadway recording of Wonderland.) If they had a cast recording I would buy it.

Freedom's Song - enjoyed the words of Lincoln

by Anonymous on 3/18/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

The show was a fun mix of songs, emotions from the different sides of the conflicts. The stories were of the soldiers and the loved ones they left behind, as well as the slaves struggles and hopes. The addition of letters and text from Lincoln's speeches made this an excellent show for Ford's Theatre.

    Amazing experience!

by Historyfam on 3/17/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

We went to the opening night of Freedom's Song and were not disappointed. We did not know what to expect, but the location adds so much to the experience of this musical. The music is moving and chilling at times. Father, How Long, sung by a "fugitive" will overpower your senses with a deep, bass voice, full of emotion and passion. The words of Abraham Lincoln and letters from the Civil War era inspire the songs, and really provide a balance between all "sides" of this story.

    Freedom's Song

by Anonymous on 3/17/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Amazing performance! This is on par with plays I've seen on Broadway. The songs were beautiful and moving and the way the plot moved along using only Lincoln'd words was incredible. This is a must see for everyone!

Nobody can live up to this all-encompassing title

    by rebadog1 on 3/17/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

First, there was much that I loved. There were parts of the performance that brought me to tears, especially Freedom's Song. I commend the actor for his rendition. However, as a white, older person who has studied the Civil War and the horrible aftermath of Jim Crow discrimination, which still exists in significant ways, I cringed at the upbeat ending. It suggests that the Emancipation Proclamation solved the problem, and the blacks needed only to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and get on with it. Not honest! Another thing: the "hat" didn't work for me. The images on the rear screen were helpful, but I needed more of an on-stage Lincoln presence, if you will. Last thing: the young actors didn't quite have the "voice" needed to touch me when reciting Lincoln's unforgettable words.

    Wonderful show

by ptmickey on 3/17/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Wonderful tribute not only to Lincoln but the American people of the 1860s. Great staging and very moving music with lyrics largely coming from period writings and letters. 90 minute one act musical that moves along at an entertaining pace alternating between rabble rousing battle numbers to emotional struggles of both slaves and citizens on the home front. Highly recommend this show at this time of the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. If you arrive early you can also visit the museum on the lower level as part of the ticket price, great value.
