Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce that two of the most prolific bands of recent times, Franz Ferdinand and MGMT, will join forces for a pair of special co-headline shows in Australia this July.
These shows mark both Franz Ferdinand and MGMT’s first visits to our shores in five years, with co-headline performances at Melbourne’s Festival Hall (Tue 24 Jul) and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion (Wed 25 Jul), as well as a stop at Byron Bay’s Splendour In The Grass festival.
Glasgow quintet Franz Ferdinand remain one of the UK’s biggest exports of the last two decades, and will perform in Australia on the back of announcing a huge world tour and dropping fifth record Always Ascending. Their 2004 self-titled debut album immediately propelled them to major global commercial and critical success, taking home the 2004 Mercury Music Prize as well as seeing their anthemic single ’Take Me Out’ chart in the top ten across the world.
Fresh off the back of the UK leg of their world tour and currently performing in the USA, the quintet are looking razor-sharp ahead of their Australian shows. As noted by The AU Review, Franz Ferdinand live are not to be missed: ’The new songs fit in well with the old material and filled the room with real warmth, allowing the band to prove that they are not content to just sit back and trade on nostalgia alone.’
MGMT are Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, the Grammy-nominated duo who have been producing innovative psychedelic pop anthems since their 2008 debut Oracular Spectacular including some of the biggest songs of the 2000s in ‘Kids’, 'Time to Pretend’ and ‘Electric Feel'. These will be MGMT’s first performances in Australia since January 2014.
The band’s fourth album Little Dark Age, released earlier this year, features the “undeniably brilliant” (NME) lead single ‘Little Dark Age’ as well as ‘When You Die’ and ‘Me And Michael’, and was released earlier this year to widespread critical acclaim. Produced by MGMT, Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift, Kelela, Blood Orange) and long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, Tame Impala), Little Dark Age is a true “show of strength” (Q, 4*) and “unironically gorgeous… MGMT doing what MGMT do best” (The Guardian, 4*).
After an extensive UK, Europe and North American headline tour at the start of the year that took them to a number of iconic venues including a sold out show at London’s Electric Brixton, Paradiso in Amsterdam, and the Hollywood Palladium, the band will embark on a huge eleven-date headline US tour this May before heading to summer festivals across the world, including Firefly, Mad Cool and NOS Alive. MGMT are thrilled to be performing in Australia for the first time in over four years.
The combined firepower of Franz Ferdinand and MGMT in Melbourne and Sydney this July is sure to be unmissable.

Amazing performance. Great energy. Crowd was really into it.
Great vocals. Great musicianship. Cool lightshows. Great setlist. Fun Crowd. All in all, an amazing concert experience!
These guys rocked for two hours, came out right on time and were just amazing. Better than their last performance at the Fonda theater.
Don't know where they've been hiding but happy to see Franz Ferdinand return to the area playing the Fox Theatre in Oakland. They have had so many good songs and they played them all. Franz Ferdinand put on a great show.
Well, it was a memorable experience, and one I will never forget. The only part that I personally did not like were the opening act, and the fact that the band didn't play "No You Girls". Other than that, it was an excellent event
Franz Ferdinand and the Fox Theater in Oakland California was the perfect match of small club atmosphere and Big Event sounds. The Fox Theater is Oakland's best music venue BAR NONE!
The band is always great. But when they brought out Care Le Bon on stage to sing "call me", it took it to another level! And the Fox Theater continues meet a high level of class. Go and check it out for just about any show.
Franz Ferdinand has aged very well. They put on a great straight rock show complete with a four man drum solo.
I've been to hundreds of concerts. Franz Ferdinand just broke into the top ten that includes Pulp opening for Blur at the Fillmore, The Charlatans at The Royal Albert Hall, and Radiohead at Slims. They were that amazing. Even though it was a Monday night, they rocked it like it was a Friday. The set was tight and well selected. I think my favorite part, besides Evil Eye, was when all for of them started wailing on the drum set together. Wow.
Franz Ferdinand is a pretty awesome band. They have a lot of energy. We enjoyed their show. Sound system seemed a little muffled. Also wanted to hear the 'flick the cigarette' song but they didn't play it. o wells!
Fun lively show. Brought a friend who was skeptical of this band and he loved the show!
I caught Franz Ferdinand for the first time back in 2004 when I heard they would be opening for Morrissey later that year in Manchester. For starters, their debut album was amazing, and seeing it live made me an instant fan. I caught them again at the Inland Invasion, and then again for their follow up album tour at the Greek Theater. They aim to please their audience. They are truly selfless in that respect. These guys played for 90 minutes NON-STOP and after a very brief time-out, came back for a great encore to complete a full 2-hour set. Who does that nowadays? Now that I am a father, it was a pleasure to have taken my 17-year-old and my wife to the show and have them witness the exact same intensity with which I saw Franz Ferdinand perform over 10 years earlier. My wife was not a fan of theirs going into the show, but now admits to have a great deal of respect for them.
The band was really tight and sounded amazing. Alex did a great job working the crowd, getting the energy level up.
better than expected, great performance, great sound. some bands get lost in hammerstein, not these guys.
Ive seen them everytime they've played Philly and they never disappoint. I will say I was shocked that they didnt play Right Thoughts Right Words since its the first single off their new album. Nevertheless an amazing show.
Franz Ferdinand absolutely blew me away! This was the first show i have been to. We were in New York on holiday and decided to go see them. These Glasgow guys rocked the Hammerstein Ballroom!!!! Loved it! On thing that made us sad though: the rediculous prices for a simple drink in the hammerstein ballroom. Complete rip off if you ask me.
I've wanted to see Franz Ferdinand live since I was in High School and I was NOT disappointed! They put on a fantastic show full of energy and they sounded amazing. Possibly the best concert I've ever attended. Thanks, guys!
great event...maybe few songs more but great performance
This makes my list of best concerts. There set list was perfect and they kept me dancing. A must see
