Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce that two of the most prolific bands of recent times, Franz Ferdinand and MGMT, will join forces for a pair of special co-headline shows in Australia this July.
These shows mark both Franz Ferdinand and MGMT’s first visits to our shores in five years, with co-headline performances at Melbourne’s Festival Hall (Tue 24 Jul) and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion (Wed 25 Jul), as well as a stop at Byron Bay’s Splendour In The Grass festival.
Glasgow quintet Franz Ferdinand remain one of the UK’s biggest exports of the last two decades, and will perform in Australia on the back of announcing a huge world tour and dropping fifth record Always Ascending. Their 2004 self-titled debut album immediately propelled them to major global commercial and critical success, taking home the 2004 Mercury Music Prize as well as seeing their anthemic single ’Take Me Out’ chart in the top ten across the world.
Fresh off the back of the UK leg of their world tour and currently performing in the USA, the quintet are looking razor-sharp ahead of their Australian shows. As noted by The AU Review, Franz Ferdinand live are not to be missed: ’The new songs fit in well with the old material and filled the room with real warmth, allowing the band to prove that they are not content to just sit back and trade on nostalgia alone.’
MGMT are Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, the Grammy-nominated duo who have been producing innovative psychedelic pop anthems since their 2008 debut Oracular Spectacular including some of the biggest songs of the 2000s in ‘Kids’, 'Time to Pretend’ and ‘Electric Feel'. These will be MGMT’s first performances in Australia since January 2014.
The band’s fourth album Little Dark Age, released earlier this year, features the “undeniably brilliant” (NME) lead single ‘Little Dark Age’ as well as ‘When You Die’ and ‘Me And Michael’, and was released earlier this year to widespread critical acclaim. Produced by MGMT, Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift, Kelela, Blood Orange) and long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, Tame Impala), Little Dark Age is a true “show of strength” (Q, 4*) and “unironically gorgeous… MGMT doing what MGMT do best” (The Guardian, 4*).
After an extensive UK, Europe and North American headline tour at the start of the year that took them to a number of iconic venues including a sold out show at London’s Electric Brixton, Paradiso in Amsterdam, and the Hollywood Palladium, the band will embark on a huge eleven-date headline US tour this May before heading to summer festivals across the world, including Firefly, Mad Cool and NOS Alive. MGMT are thrilled to be performing in Australia for the first time in over four years.
The combined firepower of Franz Ferdinand and MGMT in Melbourne and Sydney this July is sure to be unmissable.

This was my first time getting to see Franz Ferdinand live and they did not disappoint. Great show with Great songs. Hope they come back soon!
Good professional show, played all the known hits. Well worth the money.
They put on such a great show. So much energy!!! I loved it.
Absolutely incredible show! They’re still as good as always and it’s rare that a headlining band comes out on time and gets right down to business!
i went on a whim, i literally bought the tickets the night before the show, and i am so glad i did. franz ferdinand put on one of the best shows i’ve ever seen
It's been more than a decade since Franz Ferdinand was till a buzzworthy band, but man! They can still deliver the goods. Alex Kapranos's voice sounds phenomenal, and their energy is relentless. They old hits sound better than ever, and the new ones keep you dancing. What a fantastic show!
Franz Ferdinand never disappoints. High energy, great music.
The Stone Pony is a great venue, but sold-out inside shows there are not my favorites. It is almost impossible to get a good view of stage *and* have access to a bar *and* be able to get to restrooms if necessary. I suppose 2 out of 3 ain't bad... At least they had the good sense to admit the crowd thru the outdoor patio area and eliminate the bottleneck of entering thru the venue door and then needing to push thru the sea of people in front of the stage to get anyplace but the entryway. IMO, this show should've been an outdoor/Summer Stage show. Those provide better sightlines, great sound and accommodate more fans. That said, both POW! and Franz Ferdinand turned in great sets...go see them. The sound was excellent from every viewing spot (even side of the stage) as it always is at this venue.
The Ritz has the perfect size for a small, intimate concert, which works nicely for a band such as Franz Ferdinand. Good acoustics, great lights and the band delivered a spotless performance, as usual. You can't go wrong with Franz Ferdinand !
Awesome live show!!! They totally put on an amazing and fun performance! I would definitely go again
Great venue, great sound. Not many bands out there that are better live than just listening to them on vinyl/cd etc but Franz are. Great sound, played a great mix from all their albums. Frontman Alex Kapranos is a proper frontman, a real showman!
Absolutely amazing show by Franz Ferdinand! Cant believe the energy from not only the band but the fans!!
Boring opener and audience. Franz were fantastic, good setlist, good new songs, we had a great time, the guy on keyboards was fantastic.
As always, Franz Ferdinand puts on an unforgettable show. This was my third time seeing them live and even with a change in band members, the performance was electrifying.
Wonderful time seeing Franz perform. Beautiful♡♡♡♡
The show was great! Although they made us wait for too long it was worth it!
Very energetic and tight band. Would see them again. Great night.
This was the fourth time to see Franz Ferdinand in a year and it was the best. Every time I saw them it was in a progressively bigger room, with the Wiltern being the biggest. The crowd was awesome and the band fed off it putting on an amazing show, outshining the other three performances and giving me the most memorable experience.
I didn't decide to go to this show until the day of, and bought my ticket at about 3 in the afternoon. I didn't know much of their material besides their new album, but I still thought I would check them out. I was extremely impressed with their performance. The musicianship was tight, and they were thoroughly engaged with their audience. The sound was also just right, as I have very sensitive ears and usually need earplugs when I go to shows. They were loud enough to fill the entire room, but not so loud that I needed my plugs. They seem to be one of those bands that aren't as big as they deserve to be, unfortunately. They deserve to be in a sold out Staples Center rather than a 3/4 full Wiltern . Alex Kapranos has a terrific voice and is one of the most engaging frontmen I've ever seen. I look forward to seeing this band again!
This was the first time I saw them in concert and they surpassed my expectations. They put on a great show and I love their energy. I had an awesome time and now I'm trying to see them again before their tour ends.
