About

FOURPLAY IN CONCERT:

Iconic smooth jazz quartet Fourplay hold the distinction of being the only music group in history to be recognized by the United States Congress, and it's easy to see why. Comprised of some of the best jazz musicians in the world, the supergroup never fails to dazzle with their virtuosic playing and electrifying chemistry on stage, creating an outsized live sound that belies their humble setup. Featuring selections from more than two decades of recording, Fourplay's 2013 shows hit all the right notes, building excitement for their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in 1990 by Bob James, Harvey Mason, Nathan East, and Lee Ritenour, Fourplay made their self-titled album debut in 1991, topping the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart for a whopping 33 weeks.  Their potent blend of pop, R&B, and smooth jazz clearly struck a chord with audiences — 1993 sophomore album Between the Sheets was a similar success, also topping the charts and receiving a Grammy nomination. Over the years, they've been joined on their recordings by a range of celebrated pop vocalists including Phil Collins, Patti Austin, and Babyface, and they hold the honor of being the only musical group ever honored by the United States Congress. With a host of highly anticipated tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans eagerly await a follow-up album to 2012's lauded Esprit de Four.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"These guys are the most professional, tight, hard playing SMOOTH jazz band I've had the pleasure of seeing live. They played continuously and ebulliently for almost 2 hours!"

"It's hard to believe that two guitars, a piano and drums can put out the sound that Fourplay does. What a talented foursome."

"The musicianship was impeccable, the mood was enchanting, and the energy was electric."

  • Outstanding as always

    by Knight1999 on 4/23/13Florida Theatre Jacksonville - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Fourplay was excellent! I noticed that Chuck Loeb has taken a bit larger role than his first visit here with Fourplay. Nothing wrong with that. He is absolutely fantastic. I'm ready for their next tour!

  • A MUST SEE!

by Dieha on 4/22/13Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Bob James, Chuck Loeb, Nathan East & Harvey Mason came to Atlanta & gave individual & collective stellar performances. This is a "Do Not Miss" event if they come to your city! Some stuff from the new album but enough of their "classics" to satisfy. A bargain at the price. These professionals make it look easy, especially the senior maestros. Bob & Nathan are completely simpatico! Watch for the piano/whistling collab......priceless!

  • LOVE Fourplay!

by Diamondgirlal on 4/22/13Atlanta Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The Atlanta concert was wonderful! An evening spent with jazz legends at the top of their game. I will definitely see Fourplay live again soon! The venue was very comfortable...snacks and adult beverages available! All seats were 'good seats'!

  • Best of the year for me!!!

    by Flash715 on 4/22/13Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This was by for the best live jazz performance I have attended this year. The selection of titles as spot on. This interaction between group members was amazing. The audience reaction was great, clearly true jazz fans. Just tell me when they are here again and I will be there. Only adjustment I could suggest is more tonal equality between instruments, lead guitar was a little louder than the other instruments.

  • Espirit De Fourplay

by WoodmanHD on 4/22/13Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show! Correction ...Amazing Show! This was my first time seeing Fourplay live. Some conflicts over the years always seem to prevent me from see the group in concert. It was worth the wait. I wish I had seen the band with Lee Ritenour and/or Larry Carlton on guitar. Folks at the show who have seen Fourplay with all three guitar players agreed that Chuck Loeb was the best yet! The whole show was great! The sound, view, everything. As always, the parking at Variety Plathouse leaves much to be desired. The parking is difficult at best ...but this night was especially bad. Inman Park was having its annual weekend Festival. The traffic jams were horrendous. Once the show started ...everything just got better and better. It was good to see Harvey Mason is recovered from his Acilles surgery. I had seen Nathan East before, but he was playing with Eric Clapton way back then. After an amazing show ...the band did a meet and greet in the lobby. I waited at the end of the line to have my CDs signed by the band. They graciuosly signed all 14 of my Fourplay Cds and Chuck signed 2 of his CDs. Thank you guys for making such great music! What a great show! As they were signing my CDs ...they even gave me a signed setlist! What a nice touch (the sky!). Thanks again for great music and a great show!

The venue was perfect! Sound quality was excellent! The people we sat next to were very friendly. I don't think there was a bad seat in the house.

  • Fourplay - Excellent

by counterviews on 4/22/13Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This is my first Bob James live performance although I have albums from the "Angela" days. I expected that he would be good; he was great and he certainly did not disappoint. I had heard several Chuck Loeb tracks but had never seen him in person. I have seen Lee Ritenour, Grant Geissman and others in concert and was anxious to see how he compared. In my opinion Chuck Loeb is one of the very best jazz guitarists today. It must be satisfying to Chuck to know that if it is at all possible to play on the guitar, he can do it. His performance is spontaneous, creative, exciting. I was and always will be in awe of what I heard from him that night. The drummer and bass player I did not know but both are world class talents. All together, Fourplay makes for a wonderful evening of live smooth jazz.

  • Great Concert

    by northgeorgiadiver1 on 4/22/13Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

We arrived during the first number and were seated promptly by the helpful staff at the Variety Playhouse. The quartet was tight. The mix was very good. The volume was fabulous - I loved not having my ears bleed afterwards! Bob, Chuck, Nathan, and Harvey looked so comfortable playing with each other - and they convinced me they were having fun onstage. The song choice was a good mix of old and new tracks. I've been a fan for years, but the first chance I've had to see them live. Bottom line - I'd pay to see them again in this venue. Nuf said!

Fourplay was great. Great balance of old and new pieces. The venue, Variety Playhouse, is a great place for a jazz concert. Get there early and pick your seat. I saw Stanley Clarke there as well. I will get tickets for Fourplay the next time they are in town. Excellent show.

    by jazzgirl54 on 4/25/12Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

OMG !! These guys were INSANE !! I can't remember a concert where the players were so connected, so talented and so stupendous ! Nathan -- is there anything he can't do ? Harvey- just about making love to those drums ! Bob - keyboardist extradonaire! and Chuck -- absolutely sending it through the roof. The addition of the call and response-type interaction was just the bomb ! This concert lingers in your mind, and brings a smile to your face, for a long long time afterward.
