About

FOURPLAY IN CONCERT:

Iconic smooth jazz quartet Fourplay hold the distinction of being the only music group in history to be recognized by the United States Congress, and it's easy to see why. Comprised of some of the best jazz musicians in the world, the supergroup never fails to dazzle with their virtuosic playing and electrifying chemistry on stage, creating an outsized live sound that belies their humble setup. Featuring selections from more than two decades of recording, Fourplay's 2013 shows hit all the right notes, building excitement for their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in 1990 by Bob James, Harvey Mason, Nathan East, and Lee Ritenour, Fourplay made their self-titled album debut in 1991, topping the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart for a whopping 33 weeks.  Their potent blend of pop, R&B, and smooth jazz clearly struck a chord with audiences — 1993 sophomore album Between the Sheets was a similar success, also topping the charts and receiving a Grammy nomination. Over the years, they've been joined on their recordings by a range of celebrated pop vocalists including Phil Collins, Patti Austin, and Babyface, and they hold the honor of being the only musical group ever honored by the United States Congress. With a host of highly anticipated tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans eagerly await a follow-up album to 2012's lauded Esprit de Four.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"These guys are the most professional, tight, hard playing SMOOTH jazz band I've had the pleasure of seeing live. They played continuously and ebulliently for almost 2 hours!"

"It's hard to believe that two guitars, a piano and drums can put out the sound that Fourplay does. What a talented foursome."

"The musicianship was impeccable, the mood was enchanting, and the energy was electric."

  • Incognito was off the chain.

by JaziSyd on 4/7/15Detroit Opera House - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

I truly enjoyed Hiroshima, Incognito and Fourplay. I must admit I was saddened because the show lasted too long. The show started on time although Fourplay did not come on the stage until 10:35pm I was only able to enjoy about 20 minutes of Fourplay. All of the performers truly ignited the audience therefore making it a wonderful show. Please bring all three performers back again.

  • Loved the Concert

by BLGCT on 4/7/15Detroit Opera House - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I attended the Fourplay, Incognito & Hiroshima concert as an early wedding anniversary present to each other. The concert was fantastic. Our seats were on the main floor in the orchestra pit. Each group had its unique style, but yet the music of each group blended well with the other groups. I would highly recommend this concert and venue.

  • Incognito, Maysa and Four Play Detroit 2015

by Anonymous on 4/7/15Detroit Opera House - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was PHENOMENAL!!!! I haven't been to a concert this good in YEARS! The crowd and talent were truly eclectic. Maysa's voice is simply beautiful! The musicians TRULY have been BLESSED by a higher POWER! I've been on a high since the concert Saturday night! This was well worth the money spent! Can't wait to do this again!!!!

  • Incredible concert!

by PAPAJSMOOTH on 4/7/15Detroit Opera House - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

I've been trying to see Incognito for years but I always procrastinated and let the tickets sell out, but not this time! My wife and i had a blast! Fourplay and Hiroshima did not disappoint but the highlight for me was incognito with Ms Maysa Leak! I've been a fan of hers for many years but to see her with Bluey and the band was something special! I don't think people really appreciate the showmanship of Bluey but trust me they're great! I just wish Maysa would join them full time and the prolific album output would resume! But that's just me! Never the less i really had a great time thank you guys!

  • Incognito, love this group!

by Jricco on 4/7/15Detroit Opera House - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Incognito always bring a great show! It would've been a better show if Incognito closed the show instead of Fourplay (a good performance as well) due to them playing a more laid back set. Hiroshima played a good opening set too.

I have been a jazz fan since I was 13 years old. I'm 41 now and I grew up listening to these amazing artists. Truely an awesome concert at a Detroit gem. Can't wait for Chene Park Wednesday night jazz series concerts to start.

My wife and I are big FOURPLAY fans who have thoroughly enjoyed their tunes and performances since they formed. We've seen these remarkable musicians only a few times but the more we see them, the more we like them! They had us rocking in our seats and standing up applauding the entire evening. We've never seen them perform with more style and energy!!!!!!

The group consist of Bob James on keyboards/piano, Nathan East on bass guitar, Chuck Loeb on guitar and Harvey Mason on drums. Wonderful.

  • Fourplay...satisfies...as usual!!

by rockinrob77 on 6/14/14North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

The North Charleston Performing Arts is a great venue..so much better than the Colesium, acoustically. I still could have enjoyed Chuck's guitar level higher in the mix..Overall a great show! Nathan's bass came through very tight ..

  • A Virtuoso Performance by Four Great Showmen

by Therefortheshow on 6/11/14North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

Not only were the individual members quite simply among the most talented ever to play their respective instruments, their composing and improvisational skills are also just fantastic. This is cool jazz at its absolute best, with good dose of funk thrown in for good measure. I loved the humor they interspersed throughout their playing, not verbal, but the wry smile after a great solo, or the ability by all four instrumentalists to mimic the phrases by any one player in the group, and then by their body language and facial expressions to say, "well guy's how about that!" All in good natured fun and the clear respect and fondness they had for each other.
